To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, EARNEST HELLER, citizen of the United States, residing at West Nottingham, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanding Devices forv Motor Cars, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to a sanding device for motor cars running on fixed tracks, and in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a portion of the front of a car showing the vestibule and the sand box and the sanding mechanism in full lines out of use and in dotted lines as in use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional elevation of the sanding spout and its ball and socket support. Fig. 3 is a cross section of said parts corresponding to line at, a", Fig. 2. Fig. is a side elevation of a modification of the invention having pedal instead of hand actuation.

In sanding devices heretofore employed, in so far as I am familiar with them, the immediate delivery spout or tube 2 for the sand to the rail 3 in front of the wheel the tube was permanently down or suspended over the track whether in use or not, but this was and is very objectionable, as must be obvious, because of the tendency for it to become filled with dirt and water, splashing in from beneath and packing or freezing so that such tubes require constant attention and cleansing to keep them serviceable. My present invention wholly avoids and remedies this objection by pivoting the sanding tube in such a way that it is only down when used and is raised and out of the way of possible dirt accumulation at all other times. This peculiarity of construction and features incidental thereto constitute my invention. The sand is carried in a hopper or receptacle 4 as usual and delivered by a pipe joint 5 to the said tube 2 through a round joint which connects said tube and pipe. The rounded head Bis formed on the tube 2 and the socket 7 therefor is formed in or between two socket pieces 8 with half said socket in each piece and which are circular in cross section in their upper portion, and secured by screws 9 to the said pipe. The said head has trunnions 10 sup ported in the sides of the socket, members 8 below pipe 5 and is thus held to definite lines pf rotation as it is raised and lowered.

A lever 11 is fixed on an extension 12 of one of thesald trunnions and adapted to operate the sa1d tube 2, or rather to lower it to sand mg position, dotted lines, Fig. 1, a counter welghted arm 14 on said lever being relied upon to raise the tube when actuation there'- of manually or by footis withdrawn. I11 one case, Fig. 1, a chain 15 connects said lever with an actuating handle 16 in the vestibule of the car, and in Fig. 4.- a pedal control is afforded through the pedal 17 and wlre or rod 18 to the lever 10. The parts normally occupy the relations seen in Figs. 1 and 4 and are only reversed by actual manipulation. Otherwise the counter weights aredominant, and hold the tube 2 in raised positlon. However, as a precaution against possible packing with snow or other foreign substance when the spout 2 is down and moving forward with the car I have provided a guard 19 at its front which in thls inst-anoerepresent-s an extension of the front portion of said spout.

In Fig. 2 the head 6 is shown as having a threaded stem to which tube 2 is attached, but any suitable construction of these parts may be employed, the said head has a passage through the same adapted to open fully tothe pipe 5 and the contracted inlet 20 when the tube is down feeding sand. The said tube 2 rotates about a quarter of a complete circle from retired to working position, and in the latter position it hangs at a slight rearward inclination, the two side socket members being spaced apart to leave a space or slot for the tube to move in from one position to the other. When the tube is retired the passage through the same is automatically cut off by head 6.

What I claim is 1. A sanding device for cars comprising a hopper and a pipe fixed to the bottom there of through which the hopper is discharged, a pair of socket members fastened oppositely on the outside of said pipe, a circular head sooketed in said members and having trunnions extending through said members and provided with a threaded extension, a delivery spout screwed onto said extension, and means to throw said spout in an inclined position directly in front of the wheel to be sanded.
