JOSEPH I. CARE, OF WAPPINGERS FALLS, NEW YORK.
COLLAR-CLASPING COLLAR-BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16,1912.
Application filed October 30, 1911. Serial No. 857,544.
Tb all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH I. CARR, a citi zen of the United States, residing at l Vappingers Falls, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar Clasping Collar-Buttons, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to collar buttons, and especially to collar fastening devices of such novel and peculiar construction as to be capable of operation for attaching collars with or without button holes.
The object of the invent-ion is to provide in a collar-button fastening certain novel and peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, whereby collars having no button holes may be readily attached and detached to a shirt-band.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a collar-button fastening a spring-controlled member hinged or pivoted to a stud or shank-base so as to be swung into engagement with such stud or stem, said member having a spring clamp operated by a bail or lever pivoted to the said member for clamping the ends of a collar to the said member.
Vith these and various other objects, advantages and improved results in view the invention consists in the novel construction, connections and relative arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and set up in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application: Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is an edge view showing the parts in open position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the clamping spring.
The same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention, an ordinary collar button may be used, such as shown in the drawings, and such button, 1, is provided with an ear 2, projecting from the periphery of the button at right angles to the stem face of the button and parallel with the shank 3, of the button. A ball 4, is hinged or pivoted to the ear 2, and said bail has a slot 5 adjacent to the hinge or pivot. The bail 4 is U-shaped, and has a slot 6, in which is pivoted an angle-lever 7. A U-shaped clamping spring 8 is operated in the bail l, by the lever 7, and said clamping spring has a spring tongue 9 projecting through the slot 5 into engagement with the hinge or pivot ear 2, for holding the bail 4 in open position, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The tongue end of the clamping spring is soldered or riveted to the bail, and bot-h ends of this spring are provided with teeth 10, for clamping the collar ends 11, which are without button-holes and are placed within such spring while the lever is in open position, and after the bail has been placed into closed position.
It is obvious that the bail answers a double purpose, in that it looks the button to the shirt-band and prevents displacement of the button, and it forms a support or holder for the collar ends, and holds them in position to be clamped by the clamping-spring under pressure of the lever.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a collar button, of a clasping attachment comprising a collarholding bail having a hinged connection with the button and a slot extending from the hinge, a clamping-sprin secured within the bail, a spring tongue struck out of one end of the spring and projecting through said slot into engagement with the hinge for controlling the movement of the bail, and a lever pivoted between the free end of the bail and the free end of the spring for operating the latter, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH P. CARR.
