To all whmmit may concern/f Ile-it Vknown that I, (hr-ninas A. ALDEN, a citizen-of the United States, residing at Steel-ton, in the county of Dauphin and State ofy Pennsylvania, have invented certain newkand useful Improvements in Raili'oadFrogs, of whichl the following is a speci lication.
This-invention relates to that class of railroad frogs wherein the frog point and a lateral tread portion. are formed of hard cast. metal such as manganese steel and wherein a wing rail isseeured to the frog point and the tread portion laterally adtion fori-ning a lateral continuation of the head of the wing rail.
The object of my invention is to construct a frog of this classso that the frog point and the lateral tread portion may be formed in a single hard metal casting which may be readily adapted to the side of a wing rail and in which the metal of the casting may be more evenly distributed throughout the parts of the casting than heretofore and in which the desired strength in the casting may be obtained from a smaller amount of metatthan heretofore and in which the frog point and the lateral tread portion may be supported-on a common base forming a part of the casting and being flush with the bottom of the base of the wing rail so that all tread portions of the Vfrog may be supported directly beneath the same .on a tie.
W'ith this object in view, the invention consists in the novelconstruction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly claimed.
In theiaccompanying drawings, illustrating my invention: Figure 1, is a plan view of a railroad frog, showing one lform of embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the hard metal casting forming the .central portion of the frog, detached therefrom. Figs. 3 and 4, are transverse sections, on lines 3 3 and 4-4-4, respectively, of Fig. 1.
Referring to thedrawings, 5 designates the tread-forming point portion of the frog and 6 the laterally disposed Wing rails diverging from the .frog throat 7. The usual flangeways 8 are formed between the wing rails Gland the point portion 5 for the reception and guidance of Wheel flanges as the wheels pass over the frog; and the free ends of the wing rails are bent and flared Specification of Letters Patent.

outwardly, at 9, as usual, to direct the wheel flanges to the flangeways S 'as the wheels pass over the frog in the direction toward the point end of the point portion Each wing rail G is formed of a bent railroad rail section comprising, as usual, a head 10, a vertical web 11 and a base 12; and each wing rail 6 is bent outwardly adjacent the frog-point to form a recess for the'reception of a hard metal rail engaging portion 13, fitted against the inner side ot the-wing rail and forming a. lateral hard metal continuation of the head or tread portion 10 of the wing rail, adjacent the point portion=5 to receive the blows of car wheels passing over the frog. y
In accordance with my invention, the point portion and the wing rail engaging portions 13 are formed in a single casting of hard metal, preferably n'ianganese steel, and the detailed construction of the main body of the casting forming the point and wing rail engaging portions is as follows: 15 designates a flat bascextending across the space between and having its bottom in the same horizontal plane with the bottoms of the wing rail bases 1Q so that the bases 12 and 15 may rest upon underlying cross ties throughout the width of the frog. The lateral portions of the bottom of the base 15 are raised or olf-set to receive and rest upon the inner portions of the wing rail bases 1Q. as shown, in order that the base 15 may be supported by the wing rail bases 1Q as well as by the cross ties. The point portion 5 comprises a web 16 rising from the central portion of the base and extending longitudinally ot the frog, anda head or tread 17 formed on the top of the web 15. The head 17 is made tapered and increases in width from the frog point toward the heel end of the point portion, and a slight distance back ot' the frog point, the head 17 extends laterally from each side of the web 16, the lateral extensions increasing in width as the point portion widens. Each wing rail engaging portion 13 comprisesI a web 1S, rising from one side of the base 15 and extending longitudinally of the frog, and a head or tread 19 formed on the top of the web 18 and extending laterally and inwardly therefrom. The webs 21 extend transversely between and connect the webs 18 andthe webs 16, and the webs 21 also extend vertically between and connect the bottoms of the heads 19 and tliebase 15, and the webs 21 also extend vertically between and connect the bottom of the head 17 and base 15 where the head 17 extends laterally from the web 16.
The Wing rails 6y and the hard metal casting forming the point portion 5 and wing rail engaging portions 13 are secured together by suitable transverse bolts 26, as shown.
`The wing rails 6 diverge from the frog throat 7, at 23,*to connect to the usual track rails diverging from the wing rails; and leading from the heel end of the point portion 5 are the usual diverging track rails 24.

In a railroad frog, a Wing rail having a head, a steel casting forming a base plate, a point portion and a wing rail engaging portion, and Vmea-ns for securing saidY wing rail and said casting together, said wing rail engaging 'portioncomprising a longitdinally-extending web rising from said base plate and having a head formed von the top thereof and extending laterally therefrom and forming a lateral continuation of the head of the wing rail, and saidpoint portion comprising a longitudinally-extending web rising fromsaid base plate and having a tape-ring head formed on the top thereof and extending laterall therefrom. l
