"JOHN W. STONE, or PARIS, TENNESSEE.
"TOBACCO-,ROLLING MACHINE.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 103.255.. dated `May 17', 1870.
To yall whom z'tmay concentra' 4- Be `itknown that I, vJOHNA W. STONE, of
Baris, in'the county of Henry and State of` .Ten nessee, have invented a new and Improved 4Tobacco-Rolling Machine; and I do hereby declare that-the following, isa-full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in thea-rt to. make and 'use "the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specificalon. 1
`ifThis invention relates toimprovements in machines for rolling tobacco for forming it into plugs; and consists oi` a combinatiouof aifeeding apparatus `for the prepared iillin gs and another forfieeding the wrappers, with folding apparatus forfolding the Wrappers overmthe iillings ,and inclosin'g them previous tothe condensing operation of the rollers.
`Italso consists in the combination, with the rotary cutter for cutting the. plugs, ofa sliding spring-ratchet bed-plate.
Figure l'is a'horizontal sectional elevation 0E .my improved machine, and Fig.l 2 is a plan view of the same.l
A represents a feeding-table for the previously-prepared fillings, which' are placed on it by the hand. It has adjustablefside guides arranged for wideningor narrowing the space between them at the lower delivering end.
. 1D ist-he feeding-table for,` the wrappers, ony
which an endless belt, E, works toward the .condensing-rollers v and above `this belt is another belt, F, for holdin g the wrappers while passing along to the rollers. This table is provided lwith side guides Gr, which have curved projections Vlil I arranged to fold the ends of the wrappers over the filling after the latter is received on lthe wraper's, which are laid' across; the belt E by hand at .the receiv- V `in"g end, and carried, bythe belt under the Amouth of lthe'table A. where the llings drop 'upon thei'n. 4
`After rweiving 'the iilling, the whole is fed in:l a continuons stream upon the roller K and carried between it and the roller L, and thence between the latter and-.the yielding roller M, in*` a thin narrow'strip, upon the delivery and olitting table N, where it passes. under the revolving cutter head O, having ltwo or more blades, andover the sliding plate P, against the upper surface of which the cutters come in contact, and which moves outward with the cutters as long 'as they are in contact with it,
after which it is drawn back by a spring, Q.
The plate P ismade of copper or other soft substance which will not injure the edge, and, sliding along with the edges of -the cutters as long as they are 'in contact with it, prevents damage to them, which would occur if' they were to scrape along over it. 'f
The rollers are divided at the center .on the lines S, and so .arranged on their shafts that they may be separated and disks putin for dividing the spaces'lbetween the iiauges into two grooves `for making narrow plugs,ftl1e v disk of one roller beingofl less diameter and the other of forming a groove in one, nto which 'the projecting rib ot the other works. l n
The finishing-roller M isv supported on the end of a weighted bar, T, so as to givef to the inequalities of the vtobacco passing through,
and prevent the blackening which will occur if Dressed i100 hard, vas would be the case if the roller were unyielding, f
Ufs a scraper, supported on the frame above the roller t, for action cuit to scrape ofi' the Bgmounted o n pivots C, orotherwisegsuitably"" the adhering matter, and de tachably connected for removaltoV substitute othersw-hen the spaces between the ilanges of the rollers are varied. l
Having thus described myinvention, Iclai'm as new anddesire to secure by Letters Pati 1. The combination, with the pressingrollers, of the feeding-table D,feedingbelts E and F for the wrappers, audthe' 4feedingtable A for the filling, substantially as specified.
2. Thecombination,. with the wrapper feeding-belt E and .the Vfilling feeding-table A, of the folders 1, substantially as specified.`
f. 3; The sliding spring-retracted bed-plate P, in combination with the rotary cutter O, and arranged in connection with the table N, as shown and described, vfor the purpose specified.
