Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. ELLIOT'JT, a citizen of the United States. of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastener-Guides 'ifor Button-Setting Tools and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,'such as. will enable oi hers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. ' 4.- is a pivoted guide below the upper jaw and preferably in the form of a plate of sheet. metal pivoted to the upper jaw intermediate the ends and in contact with-the lnidersnrlace of said jaw when the jaws are fully opened where it is held by a shoulder 9 on the arm if engaging the inner end thereof and overcoming a spring 6 which spring tends to move the guide out; of contact; with the said jaw. Thus when the jaws are full y opened; the upper jaw,,the spring 3 and the plate a are all in close relation and each recessed in the end to simultaneously receive the eye of a button. As soon, however, as the jaws are partially closed the guide is moved away from the jaw 1 by the sprinq and down upon the fastener which latter enters lateral recesses in the jaw and is guided. and held thereby in proper position for entering the fabric. The guide is stopped in this position by a shoulder 9 on the upper jaw engaging with the inner end of the guide.v When the jaws are fully closed and the fastener clenched. the guide isagain moved up against the upper jaw out off the Way by contact with the fabric in which the fastener is inserted. By this device any swinging out of proper adjustment on the part of the fastoner is prevented and accurate work in? sored. in the modified form shown in Figs. 9 to inclnsive the upper jaw l of the tool; the springii, and the guide .4? are modifier to adapt the device to the form of fastener shown in Fig. 16, being recessed at one side to receive the eye and. fastener and the re cess .inthc guide l enlarged to suitably embrace the three prongs or the fastener and thus prevent the same from swinging Patented. What I claim is 1 j, 1. In combination with a button setting tool having opposing jaws one of which is adapted to receive the eye of a button, a pivoted guide normally close to said jaw when the jaws are opened, and adapted to receive the eye of the button and also adapted to move away from said jaw to engage and guide a fastener whenever said jaws are moved toward each other.
2. In combination with a button setting tool having opposing jaws, one of which is adapted to carry a button and fastener, a
guide pivoted to said jaw and having a slot to receive the eye of the button, said slot also being laterally enlarged to recelve the fastener, and means for automatically mov- -1ng said guide toward and away from said jaw as the jaws of the tool are opened or closed.
3. A button setting tool, comprising jaws pivoted to each other, the upper jaw being slotted to receive the eye of a button with a fastener suspended therein, a guide pivoted to said jaw intermediate its ends and having its outer end slotted to receive said eye, said slot being laterally enlarged to receive the fastener, a spring to move the guide away from the jaw, a member on the other jaw to engage the guide and move it toward said jaw, and means for limiting the movement of the guide away from the jaw carrying the button and fastener.
4. A-button setting tool, comprising two jaws pivoted to each other, a spring above the upper jaw-normally spaced apart therefrom, a movable guide below the said jaw, said spring, jaw and guide each having a slot to receive the eye of a button and the guide slot laterally enlarged to receive a fastener, and an arm fixed on the lower jaw adapted to engage the spring and guide and move the same close to the upper jaw when 5 the jaws are opened.
