BYnns, a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State' of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ItaiLAnchors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- -v j .Figre 1 is a sectional end elevation of a rail anchor embodying my invention, the

My invention relates to rail anchors of the type set forth in rpy United 'States Letters Patent No. 978,110, granted on December t3," 1910, for improvement in rail anchors, and is designed to improve this 'type of anchor.
Among the objects of my invention are to strengthen the gripping action, to do away with the insert, to enable the cores to be duplicates for both halves of the plate, and to make the two halves as substantial duplicates of each other, if desired, eXcept for the tie-engaging projection or projections where these are used.
In the drawings, referring to the form of Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, 2 represents the rail, 3 the cross tie, the anchor being made in two parts 4 and 5, which are substantial duplicates of each other, except that the station ary memberli is provided with the depending projection or projections 11. Each half or member of the anchor has at one of its longitudinal edges 4an overhanging inwardly curved abutment 6, and at its other end anv inwardly projecting overhanging' lip 7 these being inclined or tapered longitudinally, so that when reversed in position, the oven hanging lip of one member will have a wedging engagement inside the overhanging abutment of the other member. The web portion 9 of the section lipon which the rail seats is diagonally out away, as shown at 10, so that when Jthe two sections are applied tov each otherfthe upper portions of the web together constitute the seat for the rail, while the overhang lip of eachsection engagesthei overhung abutment of the other section. In order to strengthen the sections 4while at the same time making them as light as possible, I provide cach member with a diagonal depending bottom lip 12, extending from one corner to the other and merging into one of the ianges 1.3,which back up and strengthen' the overhanging abutment. One of these anges 13 may be used for driving the device home and this flange is preferably provided with a backing-up rib 14, which may also be present on the other member, if desired. The member having the projections 1 1 is substantially the same as the other section, except that vone of these projections 11 may have 'the rib extension 15 running across the bottom of this member to the di ,agonal depending ribs 12. A depending .rib 16 extends along one edge of each member f1, being, of course, yon the side having the depending projections, wl'xere such are used. In order to make the web of substantially the same thickness throughout, depressions 17 are formed in the bottom portions, matching with the raised portions forming the rail seats. rllhe recesses in the overhanging lips which engage the rail base are preferably proportioned so that the base flange of the railwill be gripped between the inclined upper surfaces 18 and the lower surface 19, whether the edge of the base flange of the rail isngaged or not. I preferably proportion these recesses so that the rail will be engaged both on the top, bot-tom and edge of this ba se iiahge when the anchor is driven completely home.
In Figs. 7 .and 8, I show a form of the invention'similar to that of Figs. 1 tc (i, inclusive, except that the anchor in this form is designed to be used with a tie-plate 20, which is shaped' so as to form an abutment against which the body of one of the members will abut. In this case, therefore, the
tie-engaging projection or projections is done away with, and the members are preferably exact duplicates of each other. in these iigures, parts similar to those of Figs. to 6, inclusive, areindioated by similar numerals with the letter a applied. The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in they art, since the anticreeper or rail anchor of the general type shown in my fprior patent is made stronger and simpler. The cores may be duplicates for both castings and the castings l Changesmay be made inthe form and arvrangement of theparts, without departing from my invention.
