Be it known that I, ALBERT B. Bm', a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the' county ot Polk and State of' and use- The object of my invention is to provide an improvement onya device of my former Patent, No. 770,559, of Sept. Q0, 1901, whereby the support in which the rest of the calculating device is mounted, is provided with a pivoted indicator' adjacent to each of the channels in'whieh the movable belts travel and whereby each movable belt is provided with means'for moving` said iiulicator at the proper time t'or indicating that a figure should be carried from one column to another, which means tor movingr the indicatoris o n the opposite side ol the belt from the side which receives the means tor moving the belt.

My invention consists in certain details, in the ctmstlrlnetion, arrangement., and combination otf the various parts ot the device, whereby the objet,l tained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claimsl and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 shows a top or pla-n view ot' t-he device embodying; my invention. In order to explain the working of my im proven'icnt. I' shall briefly describe the con.- structio'n et my calculating device.
In the' accompanying; drawing l have used the reference immoral 1() to indicate a, rectangular trame. lVithin said frame are alternate liller blocks 12 and partition strips 13 extending,` from the top to the bottom of theft-ame. The partition strips 13 extend downwardly below the surface of the blocks v12 and also extend upwardly above the ts contemplated, are at` blocks 12 thereby orminp; channels 1G between their respective sides, and are also provided with laterally extending: 'flanges 14 on the upper sides of the device, which flanges are spaced apart from the blocks 12, thus leavingr grooves on each side of the channels 1G, on the upper side of my device. On the upper surface 17 of each et the strips 13 I have provided a series ot numerals begrinning with 1 at the bottom vand continuing consecutively to 9 at the top as shown iirFig. 1. Transverse shafts 21 are rotatablyl mounted in the ends of the frame, and rollers 20 are rotatably mounted on the shatts 21 at the end of each channel 1G. ln the channels between the strips 13 on the upper surface et the supporting frame 10 are Va series of result numerals beginning l with 0 at the top and running consecutively to t) at the bottom. In the channels between the strips 13, 1 have provided endless belts 1S provided with perlt'n'ations lt'spaced apart ilrom each other the saine distance that the numerals on the upper suriace4 17 are spaced apart trom each other. In the movable bells 18 are openings Q2 spaced apart from eachv other ton times the distance between two adjacent openings 19. Adjacent to each ot the openingsQZ is an upwardly extending' lug mounted on the belts 1S. The openings 1l) are located approximately in line, near the right side ot each ot the belts 1.8 and the lugs '23 are located approximately in line near the lett side ot' said belt.
Located on each of the surfaces 17 at the lower end ot the supporting' frame 10 eX- cept on the surface 1T at the right side of the device a pivotally mounted indicator Q4.. Each -ot the indicators has two arms normally arranged so that one arm extends partially across the channel at the right of the indicator and so that the other arm is above the surface 17 adjacent to the channel on the left. lVhen the tlrst arm is moved downwardly, the other arm will be -moved tio entend over thechanncl at thelett ot' the switch.

The other arm of said indicator is moved to position extending over the next channel on the left.- VVhenever the indicator 24 stands in the lastnamed position, it indicates 'to the userl of the device that; a number should be carried from the column on the right to the column on the left. This is done by inserting the instrument into the opening 19 just above the indicator in the beltin the channel on the left o't said indicator and moving said belt. downwardly. 'The instrument in moving the belt will strike 'the arm extending over the channel on the left and return the indicator to normal position. The opening 22 will move one space in the ten column and in the illustration now being described, will move from the 5 to the 6 in the tens channel. The instrument is then inserted in the opening 19 adjacent to the 9 in the tens column and the belt 18 moved downwardly as far as possible. The opening 22 which was originally over the 0 in the tens column will move around the lower end of the device and the next opening 22 in the tens column will move to position to register with the 5 in the bottom of the tens channel. When the opening 22 passes around the end of the device, the lug on the beltladjacent to said 'opening strikes the projecting arm of the indicator on the left of the tens channel and moves it downwardly. The other arm on said indicator is moved out over the hun-- dreds channel indicating that a number y should be carried from the'tens to the hundreds column. The instrnmentis placed in .the opening 19 above the indicator in the hundreds column andthe belt moved downwardly. The opening 22 is thus moved downwardly. The opening 22 is'thus moved from the O'to the 1 inA said column.' The openings 22 will then register with the 1 in the hundreds column, the 5 in the tens column andthe 4 in thc units column,showing the result ot' the addition 564-982154. This' process of addition may be carried on indefinitely. It is noted that when in normal position the indicator arms are never in the path of the instrument by which the belts are moved, but when not in said position one arm of the indicator extends to the left into said path so that the movement of the instrument in the channel at the lett of the indicator, in carrying a number forward, returns the indicator to normal. position.
It will be noted from the description hercinbefore set forth that when the openings 22 are over the zeros in the channels 16,tbe next opening 22 in vthe same movable belt and the lug 23 thereon will be located just below the indicator 24. It is therefore clear that by moving one of the lugs 23 to position just below the switch, the belt on which said lug is located will be in proper position to begin calculations. l l
For quickly and easily moving the belts to proper position for beginning calculation, and for setting the indicators in normal position, I' have provided the following device bar 25 is provided with lugs 26 spaced apart'from each other atsuch distances that when the said lugs are inserted into the channels 16 adjacent to the left sides'thercot as shown in Fig. 2, and are moved from the upper end to the lower end of said channels, the lugs 26 will engage the lugs 23 on the respective movable belts, and move them to position just below the switch and all of the movable belts willvbe in proper position for beginning calculations. Thc lugs 26 are narrow enough that when moved down the left sides of the channel they will not interfere with indicatorv arms extending over the channel from the entering the opening 19 and moving the4 belts 18. A In the practical operation o device, the lugs 26 on the bar 2. are placed .in the channels ladjacent to the left sides thereof at the upper ends of the said channels and are then moved toward the lower ends so lthat one of the lugs 23 on each of the movable belts 18 is moved to poimproved sition just below the switch. An opening 22 in each of said movable belts will then be over the 0 in the channel 16. rIvhe indicators are then moved to normal position as above set forth. The process of adding may then be carried on as hereinbetore described and as more fully setorth in my former patent. The indicator 24 adjacent to each movable belt will be turned at the proper time to indicate that a number should be carried to the column on the left. That gure may be lcarriedforward as hereinbefore described and the process may be carried on indefinitely.
My improved device herein described, has the advantages, when used with my calculating device, of visibly indicating when a number should be carried forward and it also indicates visibly'by the position of the switch that the process of carrying forward has been completed.
I claim as my invention 1. In a device of the class described, a frame having channels therein, endless belts movably mounted in said channels, means for engaging the belts, said means being located on one side of said belts, lugs on the other side of Asaid belts and an indicator mounted on said frame between said channels, having an arm which in one position of its movement extends into the path of said lugs, on one belt and another arm, which in one position of its movement eX- tends into the path of the means for engaging another belt.
2. In a calculating device, a supporting frame having channels therein, a series of result numerals in saidvchannels, a series of numerals adjacent to said channels, endless lproj ected into the belts movable in said channels having openings therein designed to disclose said result numerals, means for engaging said belts for moving them, lugsvon said belts, indicators located on said frame having portions designed to extend partially across the next channel on the right into the path of said lugs but not into the path of said means for `engaging said belts.
3. vIn a device of the class described, a frame,
channels formed therein, endless belts movably mounted in said channels,
means located adjacent to one side of each of said belts whereby said belts may be moved, lugs on the other side of each of said belts, indicators movably mounted between said channels, each indicator being constructed with one arm which in its normal position extends partially across the channel at the right of the indicator into the path of said lugs, and another arm which normally rests over the portion of the device between the channels but which is moved to position extending partially across the channel at the left when the other` arm is struck by the lugs on the belt in the channel on the right.
4. In a device of the class described, a bar provided 'with lugs properly located and channels of the calculating device so that when moved downwardly therein they will engage, the lugs on the movable belts.
