e To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUcUsr R. ScHonNKr, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new "and useful VVork-Feeding Mechanism for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to work feeding mechanism for sewing machines, and particularly for thatclass of sewing machines used for sewing soles on shoes.
One of the objectsv of this invention 1s to construct a work feeding mechanism which will be simple in construction, consist of a few parts, and which will be accurate in its operation and adjustment eliminating all play; and to provide a construction in which the adjustment for stitches of dif-, ferent lengths can be made from practicallyzero to a maximum.
Another object is to construct a mecha nism which can be adjusted foralinementfi etc., and in which such adjustment can be made exceedingly no; and in which the. parts are so position, d and constructed that the adjustment can e made and the parts looked after adjustnientfrom the froht'of the machine.

The machine to which this: invention is' applied is a sole sewing machine of the type disclosed in Patent No. 473,870, and more particularly such as showrrand de-- scribed in application Serial Nam-631,290, and similar parts are designatedg the same reference charactersas in-said application. i
In the drawings, 26 designates a head or base for supporting the varlous parts. This base supports a pair of brackets,- one of which is shown at 29, which brackets are provided with bearings "for a main driving shaft having mounted thereon a number of canis, one of which is shown at C and provided with a cam groove 0". The head 26 supports and has formed integral therewith a for-" wardly extending lug 341for\ming a support for the work feeding mechanism. A casting 35 supports the needle segment 51 and its needle 52, and also the work support or table 129. A bracket 40 "is bolted to' the head 26 and is provided with a forwardly extending arm 43 forming a bearing-forthe feed slide actuating lever.
-The above construction 'isdescribed in detail in the application referred to.
The forwardly extending lug 34 for-ms a guide 100 for a feed slide 101. This feed slide carries a post 102 forming an adjustable support for the awl and its carrier or segment. The awl 103 is clamped in the awl segment 104 which is loosely mounted for oscillating "movement upon a stub shaft in the upper. end of the post.
An actuating lever is pivoted upon a shaft 107 mounted in the arm 43, and one arm 108 of this lever is provided with a cam roll 109 engaging the cam groove 0 while the other arm 110 is provided with a guideway 111. A link 112 is pivotally connected to the post 102 by a pivot bolt 112 and is provided at its other end with a block 113 engaging the guideway' 111.
The guideway 111 is cut on the arc of a circle having the ivot 112 as. its center so as to prevent shifting of the awlout of alinement with the' needle when. the block 113 is adjusted I in the guideway; {The guideway lll is cut in the lower face-of the arm 110, and theupper face 'of the link therefore bears against the lower face of the arm. An arm 114; is secured to and preferably formed integral with the link 1-12 and is spaced therefrom so as to extend over the upper face of the arm 110,, and v forms a" handle by .means of which the blo'ck 113 may be shifted inthe guideway. This arm is displacedwith respect to the link so that theblock may be moved to, the pivot of the actuating lever. Thisconstruction is advantageous, since it permits the feed of the work to be adjusted from practically, zero to a maximum. If the arm 114 were in alineinent with the link, then it would be impossible to move the block near the center of the actuating lever, since i 105 the edge of the arm would engage the pivotal support or hearing for the actuating lever before the block would reach the pivot. However by displacing the arm with, respect to the link, this block can be moved up tothe very center of the lever so that the feed can be adjusted to practically zero. The link 112 and the arm connected thereto embrace thelever so as to link is locked on the pivot by means of lock nuts 117.- The cylindrical block is provided with a vertical groove or guideway 118 with which cooperates the pm 119 of an eccentric 120 rotatably mounted in the 0st 102. A part of the eccentric shank iireaded at 121 and the post is correspondingly tapped to securethe eccentric in posltlon 1n the post. The eccentric is provided with a hexagonal head 122 so that it may be engaged by a wrench and'be turned. The eccentric is bored axially to receive a locking pin 123 which is threaded at 124 into the eccentric and is provided with an angular head 125 adapted to be engaged by a wrench. The block may be ad usted in the 0st by turning the eccentric, and may e locked in position by means of the locln'ng pin 123, this locking pin engaging the bottom of the guideway in the block so as to firmly clamp the eccentric and the block in adj1.;-.=sted position in their bearing in the post. .By means of this construction the awl maybe adjusted to aline it with the needle, and in. view of the eccentric connection this adjustment can be made exceedingly accurate and fine.
It will thus be seen that this invention provides a work feeding mechanism which will be accurate in its operation and in its adjustment. Since the link and the handle connected thereto embrace the actuating lever, the link will be maintained in engagement without auxiliary retaining means. The heads 122 and 125 extend to the front of the machine so as to be readily accessible from the'front of the machine, which is advantageous in view of the fact that it would be difiicult' to operate adjusting means if such adjusting means were positioned among the crowded mechanism ad-' jacent the feed slide. The eccentric as well as the block are constructed so as to be readily removable from the post.
It is obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from this invention, and it is therefore to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to the specific con struction shown and'described.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. In a sewing machine, the combination with a feed slide and an actuating lever having a guideway therein, of a link connected to said slide and having-a block adjustable in said guideway,parts of said link v extending under and over said lever to embrace the same, and adjustable stops on said lever engaged bya part or said link. I
. 2. In a sewing machine, the combination of a feed slide, an actuating lever therefor,
said lever is embraced by said link and said handle.
3. In a sewing machine, the combination with a feed slide and an actuating lever therefor, of a link connected to said. slide and having an adjustable connectionwith said lever, said link having a part thereof extending under said lever, and a handle on said link extending oversaid lever, whereby said lever is embraced bys'aid link and said handle, said handle being displaced laterally with respect to said link to permit the linkto be moved to the pivot of said lever. j
4. In a sewing machine, the combination with a feed slide and an actuating lever having a guideway therein, of. means'above said lever for 'pivotally supporting the link extending underneath said lever, and
a handle on said link extending over said lever and having the part thereof facing said lever supporting means displaced laterally with respect to said link.
5. In a sewing machine, the combination with a needle, an awl, and an awl slide, of an actuator for said awl slide, a connection between said actuator and awl slide including an eccentric shaft mounted on said slide and rotatable thereon to aline the awl with the needle, said shaft being positioned transversely of the line of movement of said slide and having a forwardly extending operating head thereon.
6. In a sewing machine, the combination with a needle,- an awl, and an awl slide, of an actuator for said awl slide, an eccentric shaft mounted on said slide, and a link connected to said actuator and to said shaft, said shaft being adjustable to aline the awl with the needle.
7. In a sewing machine, the combination with a needle, an awl, and an awl slide having a post for supporting said aw], of an actuator for said awl slide,a forwardly extending adjustable shaft mounted in said post, means connecting said actuator and said shaft constructed to cause said shaft to aline the awl with the needle, and an operating head on the forward end of said shaft.
8. In a sewing-machine, the combination including a block, an adjustable eccentric engaging said block, and a locking pin extending through said-eccentric and engaging said block. i

In a sewing machine, the combination of a feed slide having a post thereon, an actuator for said slide, a connection between said actuator and slide including a block slidable in said post, an adjustable eccentric in said post and engaging said block, and a locking pin extending through said eccentric engaging said block.
13. In a sewing machine, the combination of a feed slide, an actuator therefor, and a connection between said slide and actuator including an adjustable eccentric, and a pin extending through said'eccentric and constructed to lock it in adjusted position. 0
14. In a sewing machine, the combination of a feed slide, an actuator therefor, and a connection between said slide and actuator including an adjustable shaft mounted in said slide and extending forwardly, and a pin extending throu h said shaft and cc-n structed to lock saidshaft in adjusted posi-- tions.
