To all whom it may concern.'
`Be it known that I, CLAUDE A. BARNES, a citizen of the` United States, residing at Rolling Prairie, in the county of Laporte and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful FreightCar Door, of'which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in freight car doors.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of freight car doors, and to provide a simple, eilicient and comparatively inexpensive vcar door, designed for use on the exterior of box cars, stock cars and the like, and capable of affording a stornrproof closure of great strength and durability.
A further object of the invention is to provide va 'pivotally mounted car door of this character, adapted when unlocked to swing toward its open or closed position through gravity, whereby the door may be easily operated and readily moved to either its open or closed position with .little effort. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, withinthe scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any ofthe advantagesbf the Ainvention.

Lil". numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing. n i l Q In the accompanying drawing in which 1s illustrated the preferred form of the invention, l designates a freight car door pivoted at its upper rear corner by a horizontal bolt 2, or other suitable fastemng device, and arranged to swing backward and forward to uncover the door opening 3 of a car 4.- and to cover or close the same. The pivoted door, which is arranged on the exterior of the car Il, is adapted to swing by' gravity nearly to its open or closed position, and it requires but little effort to complete the opening or closing movement of the door, which is locked in its closed and open positions by front. and rear catches 5 and 6 to prevent it from swaying or oscillating or projecting below the bottom of the body of the car when it is unfastened; The door l is provided at its upper rear corner with a hinge element T, constructed of suitable metal and having an eye or opening to receive the pivot bolt 2, and provided with. integral metallic straps or braces 8, divergving downwardly and forwardly from the upper rear corner of the door when the latter is closed, and secured at intervals to the door and adapted to brace and reinforce the same to prevent the door from sagging. The door is also reinforced at its upper pivoted corner by a metallic binding strip 9, suitably secured to the door and arranged in flush rela-tion with the adjacent edges of the same. The bolt is supported at its outer end by a hanger or bracket l0, constructed of suitable metal and consisting of an intermediate depending portion and terminal attaching portions ll. The intermediate de pending portion is preferably in the form of a loop, and is provided at the bottom with a central opening l2 through which the pivot bolt passes. The attaching portions ll are secured by suitable fastening devices to an over-head guard 13, which receives the upper edge of the door l.
