Application filed June 2, 1911.

1 To all whom itcmag concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. MERRY- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atwood, in the county of Logan, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain Separators and Cleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to grain separators and cleaners and is particularly adapted for separating the grain of wild oats from the cloil pr and weed seed mingled in bulk therewit The object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the character named which will efliciently perform the ofiices for which it is intended and at the same time possess simplicity of structure, ease of operation, and cheapness of manufacture as prominent characteristics.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had, to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, Fig. 2 a plan view, Fig. 3 a front end View, Fig. 4 a section on the line 4:4.- of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 a fragmental detail perspective view showing the construction of the blades of the fan employed in the machine.
Referring to the drawings the invention is shown as comprising a frame A which includes front uprights 10 and 11 and rear uprights 12 and 13. The uprights 10 and 12 are connected together at their upper and lower ends by means of upper and lower side frame members 1 1 and 15 respectively and also by an intermediate side frame member 16. Likewise the uprights 11 and 13 are connected together at their upper and lower ends respectively by means of upper and lower side frame members 17 and 18, while said uprights 11 and Bare also connectedtogether by an intermediate side frame member 19, the latter corresponding in relative position to the intermediate side frame member 16. The uprights 10 and 11 are connected together at their upper ends by means of a cross beam 20 while another cross beam 21 connects said uprights 10 and 11 adjacent 3 screen frame B which carries screening wires B and B the former of which is inclined toward the forward end of the machine and is adapted to deliver to a discharge plate 24;. This screening wire B is of a mesh sufliciently fine to prevent the passage of weed seed therethrough. The wire B is disposed beneath the wire B and inclined toward the rear of the machine and is of a mesh sufliciently fine to permit clover seed to pass .therethrough to a pan 25 disposed therebeneath and carried by the screen frame B. a transverse trough 25 disposed adjacent the inner end thereof. The screen frame B is supplied by a hopper C supported thereabove by the upper side frame members 1 1,

This hopper C is provided with a force feed which includes a shaft 26 journaled in the upper side frame members 14: and 17 and extending transversely through the hopper in proximity to the discharge mouth thereof. This shaft 26 is provided intermediately' with a plurality of radially disposed teeth 27 while the end thereof adjacent the upper side frame member 1 1 is extended and has fixed on this extension a pulley 28. Mounted upon one of the inclined walls of the hopper C and extending inwardly is a pair of lugs 29 in which is adjustably mounted a screw 30 which carries at its lower end a gate 31 adapted to open and close the discharge mouth of the hopper O as the screw 30is rotated in first one direction and then the other. The shaft 26 and the teeth 27 carried thereby serve during the rotation of said shaft, to positively engage the material disposed within the hopper 0 and forces same through the discharge mouth of said hopper. The rotation of the shaft 26 is accomplished through the medium of another shaft 32 which is rotatably cured upon theupper face of the upper side frame members 14 and 17 respectively. This shaft 32 carries at one end a hand wheel 35 provided with a'crank 36, while a pulley 37 is fixed on the other end of said shaft 32 in alinement with the pulley 28 on the shaft 26 and asuitable belt 38 operatively connects said pulleys 37 and 28, whereby the rotation of the hand wheel 35 will effect a rotation termediate side frame members 19 and 16 respectively are journaled brackets 41 and 42 and rotatably mounted in these brackets is a shaft 43 which has fixed thereon intermediately a beveled gear 44. J ournaled in the frame of the machine in substantially the same vertical plane with the shaft 43 is a vertical shaft 45, the intermediate portion of which extends through a fan casing 46 while the upper end thereof has fixed thereon a beveled gear 47 in mesh with the beveled gear 44. This casing 46 is provided in its lower side with an opening 48 while the rear of said casing is contracted and extended to form an upwardly di- 'rected spout 49 which terminates and d elivers just at the rear of the hopper C. The lower end of this spout 49 extends below the bottom of the fan casing'46 in the form of a V-shaped trough portion 50. J ournaled in the end walls of the V-shaped trough portion is a shaft 51 which carries a feed screw 52. The end of the shaft 51 adjacent the lower side frame member 15 is extended and fixed on this extension is a sprocket wheel 53.
Secured to the lower face of the lower side frame members 18 and 15 respectively are brackets 54 and 55 in which is journaled a shaft 56. One end of this shaft has fixed thereon a sprocket wheel 57 which is connected to the sprocket wheel 53 by means of a sprocket chain 58. The other end of this shaft 56 has fixed thereon a wheel 59 which i is connected by a sprocket chain 60 with a sprocket wheel 61 fixed on the end of the shaft 43 adjacent the intermediate side frame member 19. The end of the shaft 43 which carries the sprocket wheel 61 also carries another sprocket wheel 62 which is operatively connected with the hand wheel 35 by means ofa sprocket chain 63. Mounted upon one side of the frame is a casing 64, the upper end of which terminates in the discharge mouth 65 while the lower end within the casing 64 sprocket wheels 68 and 69 upon which travels a sprocket chain 70.
This sprocket chain has secured thereto at intervals transversely disposed buckets 71 which-during their travel are supplied with grain through the action of the screw 52 after which said grain is elevated by the ;buckets and subsequently delivered through i the mouth 65. The actuation of the elevator formed by the sprocket chain 70 and the buckets 71 is accomplished by means of a I beveled gear 72 which is fixed on the shaft 1 66 exteriorly of the casing 64 and inz mesh -with a bevel gear 73 fixed on the shaft The upper end of the spout 49 is provided.

The fan disposed in the casing 46 is formed of a hub '76 and a plurality of blades 77. These blades are inclined from the direction of rotation of the fan, said in- ;clination increasing from the inner to the outer ends of the blades. By-this construction the fan is adapted to efficiently take in the air through the opening 4 8 and force same sharply through the spout 450. The
force of the blast of air issuing into the spout 49 is regulated by means of a shutter 78 which is pivotally mounted in the spout 49 adjacent itsjunction with the main portion of the fan casing 46. The shutter 78 is adapted to be operated .exteriorly' of the easing and a suitable'indicator mounted on the casing may be utilized as a guide for adjustin'g the shutter according to the weight of the grain being cleaned.

' In operation the material is placed the hopper C and the hand wheel 35 rotated. This rotation of said hand wheel will in turn cause the rotation of the shaft '26 and result in the material being forced through the mouth of the hopper upon the screen B. This operation of the hand wheel '35 also serves to rotate the shaft 43 and this rotation of the shaft 43 in turn effects the shaking of V connections previously described. That portion of the grain which is fine enough to pass through the screen B falls upon the screen B", while the remainder is worked toward the lower end of said screen and finally delivered upon the discharge plate 24. The grain thus deposited upon the screen B is worked gradually toward the rear end thereof and is delivered into the spout 49 where it is subjected to the blast of air created by the rotation of the fan in the casing. The portion of the grain delivered into the spout 49 which is of a desired Weight falls downwardly into the trough portion 50 of said spout while the light grain is blown out through the discharge mouth at the end of the spout. As the heavy grain accumulates in the V-shaped trough portion 50 it is acted upon by the screw 52 so as to be gradually delivered in the buckets -71 of the elevator in the casing 64 by which buckets it is carried and discharged through the mouth 65 into any suitable receptacle. It will of course be understood that the elevator formed by the sprocket chain 70 and buckets 71 together with the screw 52 are simultaneously operated with the other elements of the machine. Any grain that is fine enough to pass through the screen B is deposited upon the pan 25 and gradually delivered into the tracted to form a spout, a vertical shaftjournaled in said fan casing and having one end projecting thereabove, a fan fixed on said shaft within the casing, a beveled gear fixed on the upper end of said shaft without the casing, a swinging screen delivering into said spout, depending arms secured to the sides of said screen, respectively, a cross rod connecting the free ends of said arms, a shaft journaled horizontally of the frame above the fan casing, a bevel gear fixed on said horizontal shaft meshing with the bevel gear fixed on said vertical shaft, a link having one end pivoted eccentrically to the bevel gear on the vertical shaft and its other end pivotally connected to said cross rod, and means for rotating said horizontal shaft.
