The object of my invention is to provide a car of this character in which the arrangeuient of the doors and steps are such thatpassengers may more readily enter and pass from the ear` and one. in which the conductor is in full control of the doors.
Another object ofmy invention is to pro-l vide folding steps for the exit and entrance doors and operated by the lever for operating the door so to. prevent any one from a-tempting to get. on the ear until it has stopped and the doors opened by the connduetor. A further-object or my invention is to provide certain details of structure and auf' rangement of parts hereinafter; more fully.` set forth. y

AWhile I have shown my invention applied to the rear platform of a ear, it is understood that both the rear and forward ends ou the opposite sides are provided with :aged that the doors will always return trip, By this arrangement, it will be understood1 where a loop 1s provided at the end of'a car line, the same platform 1s at all times used as the rear one. .The door or doors on the opposite side of the platform may he of any desired structure 'out preferably opened by a lever bythe motorman to allow the passengers to pass from the ear at the front end. The lower end of the tube 9, below the platform, is provided with a collar O) ad@ just-ably held upon the tube by meansl of a I gage notches carried by a segment. lVhile I have deseribed\this means of holding the` levers in their adjusted position, it will be understood that any means could be employed.
The guard rails and 21, as shown, extend transverse the car and connected to the rail 21 is a. rail 26 which extends obliquely, as indicated at 27, and is connected to a standard 28. This, as shown, forms a space 529 for the conductor to stand. so thathe can not. be crowded and can easily operate the levers 19 and 25. Pivotally connected to the standard :28 is a guide yoke fl() which eX- tends within the car and serves as a dividing partition to form the entrancf` passage 31' and the exit passage 32. This yoke, as shown, is pivoted upon the standard 28 'and is held by a 4spring 33 in the position shown in Fig. 2. By this pivotal spring arrangement, it will lbe understood that the said partition will swing to either side by pressure of passengers bearing against it, and thus prevent the jamming and crowding of passengers as they enter and pass from the car.
The platform opposite the exit and entrance doors is provided with sepa rate steps operated independently of each other and each step being'operated by the lever foroperating its respective door or doors. The steps are designated by 34 and 35, the step 34 being the entrance step, while the step 35 the exit step. These steps are formed exactly alike only the entrance step, like the door, wider than the exit as only a small proportion of the passengers pass from the rear door-most vof them passing from the front door, as is well understood. The steps are formed of the usualmetal hangers 3G secured to the platform and having in its lower end the wooden section 37 forming a port-ion of the tread of the step. Extendingv through the sides of the hangers are pivots it@ carried by a section 39 of the steps and the said section so arranged that when it is E swung' upwardly it extends Within the hangers and over the section 3T to protecA thesame and preventl any one from trying to jump upon the car until it has' stopped and the step lowered or swung outwardly. The pivot of the step 34 on the inside is provided with a crank arm 40, to which is pivotally connected the link 41, which has its outer end pivotally connected to the lower end of the lever 19, whereby the move-A ment of the lever not only opens the entrance `door but lowers the step. The exit step 35 likewise has its pivot provided with a crank'arm 42, which has pivotally connected toits upper end the link 4?; which extends rearwardly and is pivotally connected to the lowerend of the lever 25, whereby the lever 25,operates bot-h the exit door `and the step. by a single operation of the same. Thesteps 34 and -35 have their outerledges protected by a sheet metal plate 44, which is preferably of lead and prevents slipping of the feet thereon. The upper faces of the outer sections ot' the steps have strips set thesin, which are also of lead, and further prevent slipping'.
The entrance door., at its upper end, is provided witha lng 46 to which is pivotally secured a lever 47 which extends across the ent-rance opening and is pivotally connected to an arm 48 carried by the door 14.v By this arrangement, it will be seen thatvthe door 14 is operated by the tube 9 through the medium of the link 24 and the lever 25. rFhis door 14, asfshown, swings inwardly and by means otl the arm 48 and the lever 4'(` the door 7 likewise swung inwardly. These doors swing. inwardly so `rthat they will not interfere with-the passengers entering the car.
The door 11 is mounted upon the-rod 8 'and upon the opposite side of the rod from' the doorf14, whereby the movement of the lever 19 in the same direc-tion as the lever 25, through the medium of the link 18, the door 1 1 will be swung outwardly. The door l1, on the inside, is provided with an arm 49, to which is pivotally connected the lever 50, which has its opposite end pivotally conne'cted to a lug `51, carried by the door 4, whereby the door 4 is moved outwardly with the door 11. These doors, as shown, swing outwardly, so that they will not interfere with the passengers as they pass from the car. y K

In Fig. 4, instead of having the double lever arrangement for operating the doors and steps separately, I have shown a single lever. In this form, 1 employ a single vertical rod 52 between the entrance and exitpassages and the lower end thereof is provided with an arm adjustahly secured thereto.. Pivotally connected to the arm is a link 54, which is ,pivotally connected to the i lever 55. The step links 4l and 43 are pivotxally connected tothe lower end of the lever,`
whereby'the steps are both raised and lowered simultaneously by the single lever. The rcd 52 has secured thereto, above the platform, a ,door 56. This door is secured to the rod at the Center and the portion 5T. on the left. forms one door of the exit passage. while the other half' 58 forml one door of the entrance passage and the doors swing in opposite directions, the same as the operation in the preferred forni, as heretofore fully described.

A passenger car having an opening forming an exit and entrance opening, a vertical rod rotatably lnounted in the said openings intermediate its ends, a sleeve surrounding the lower end of the said rod, a door carried by the said rod, a door carried by the sleeve and extending in the opposite direction to that of the door carried by the. rod. means carried by the lower ends of the sleeve and rod for separately operating the same, a folding step opposite the exitand' entrance openings, and means for separately operating said step sin'iultaneously with its respective door.

In combination with the platform of a passenger car having exit and entrance openings arranged side by side, doors closing the said` openings, dividing rails between the said openings and having upwardly bulged portions, an L-shaped lever pivotefl within the said bulged portion, links connected to laterally turned ends of the said levers and extending downwardly tl'irongli the platform, bell crank levers intermediatelypivotedto the bottom of the platform and having inner ends pivotally connected to the links, and the opposite ends of the bell crank levers having pin and slot connections With the door operating mechanism.

A passenger car having an opening forming an exit and entrance opening, separate doors closing the said exit and entrance openings, a vertical. rod inthe opening between the exit and ent-rance openings, a tube sarronnding the lower end of the said rod, a door carried by the said rod andswinging' outwardly, a dgor `carried' 4by the-said tube and swinging/fiwardly, an arm' adjustably secured to the lower end of the said rod, a lever pivoted to the platform 'of the car, a link connecting the arm and lever, an arm carried by the lower end of the tube, a lever pivoted to the platform of the car, a link connecting said second lever and the arm carried by the tube, a separate pivoted step opposite the entrance and exit openings, the pivots of the said steps having crank arms, links connecting said crank arms with their respective levers, whereby the step and door of the respective openings is simultaneously operated.-
15. A car step comprising a hanger, a step formed of two sections, the outer section adapted to fold up over the inner section.

A- passenger car having an opening forming the exit and 'entrance opening, two doors pivoted at the center of said opening and swinging in opposite directions, a door pivoted ateach end of said opening, a link their respective end doors, means for operating said central doors, a separate folding step opposite the exit and entrance openings, and means connecting said steps with the respective door operating mechanism, whereby the steps are folded with their respective doors. i
