To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, Tnnnrnns V. BARNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schaller, in the county of Sac and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soil Pulverizers and Levelers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices classed under the head of barrows and diggers, and more particularly to the class of devices known as combined pulverizers and levelers, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which will be an improvement over my former Patent No. 985,497, issued Feb. 28, 1911, in every respect.
In addition to the objects of my former patent, a further object is to provide an improved means for pulverizing the soil, and a still further object is to provide improved means for securing the ground treating implements to the device.
lVith these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel fea tures of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter referred to, and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

erence characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 1, 2, and 3 indicate, respectively, the end sills of the device, which may be of any number, according to the width of the device but, as shown in the drawings, are three in number, which sills are disposed in longitudinal alinement and connected with one another through the medium of the interlocking eye-bolts 4. This means of connecting the sills allows flexibility of the joints, and when so desired, the clevises 5 may be provided at the forward ends of the sills 1, to which may be connected the bar 6, whereby draft animals may be attached to the device.
In the construction of a machine of this character, the same may be in unitary form, or any desired multiple of units hinged together. As shown in the drawings, I have provided two units or sections, and it will be understood that when reference is had to certain elements, the same refers to one section only, but that similar elements are to be used in like manner upon the other section or unit.
Rotatably mounted between the end sills of the device are the channel or U-shaped rocking bars 7, a pair of said rocking bars being disposed between each pair of end sills. Mounted in said rocking bars and spaced throughout the length thereof, are the sockets S, which sockets are provided with the enlarged circular heads 9, and have their outer faces corrugated. The bearings or the like 10 are provided to the rear of said sockets, and have their inner faces also corrugated, and adapted to contact with the corrugated faces of the socket heads 9, and the outer faces of said bearings are provided with the upper and lower flanges 11, thereby forming recesses 12 therebetween. Eye-bolts 13 extend through the channel bars, sockets and bearings, and have the heads thereof in the recesses 12, the opposite ends of said bolts being provided with the nuts 14, whereby when said nuts have been tightened, said sockets and bearings will be securely held to the channel shaped rocking bars.
It will be seen from the foregoing description, of the sections and bars that torsional adjustment of any bearing on its respective socket may be effected by loosening the nut- 14; on the -eyebolt 13, sutliciently, to disenthe corrugated faces of said bearing heads. When such adjustment has been completed, however, a rigid relation between the parts may be established and maintained through the tightening of said nut, thereby reengaging said corrugated faces of the bearing and socket. This torsional adjustment is necessary when it is desired to adjust the teeth carried by the bearing, as will be more particularly and hereinafter described.
As this machine is a combined pulverizer and leveler, it will be appreciated that various forms of teeth are used on the device, which may be secured in various different ways. Each of the bearings 10 is provided with alining openings 15 in the upper and lower flanges 11 thereof, which also aline with the head of the eye-bolt 13 when properly positioned, and in the forward of the rocking bars 7 I desire to provide harrow teeth 16, the shanks of which are adapted to be introduced through the alining openings of the bearings and heads of the eye-bolts, and the upper ends thereof threaded to receive the nuts 17, whereby when the same have been turned to engage the upper faces of the bearings, said teeth will be securely held in position. The second of the rocking bars of the device is provided with sod or hummock blades 18, which blades, forming an essential part of my invention, will be described in detail. Each of these blades is provided wit-h the shank 19, which is adapted to pass through the alining openings of the socket and the opening in the head of the eye-bolt 13, and the upper end thereof is bent at right angles, as at 20, whereby said blades may be securely held, or held for os cillating movement. These hummock blades are of siinitar shape, and are curved so that the convex cutting edge thereof is in a plane at an angle to the concave or rear edge, that is the blades are arcuate in cross-section, and it is the function of these blades to cut, split and sever large sods and hummocks in the path of travel of the implement. As stated, the upper end of the shank 19 is bent at right angles to the general trend thereof, as at 20, and when it is desired to osciliatingly mount said blades in the frame, said right angular bent portions 20 may be loosely inserted in the openingsof the floating bar 21, and a spring key 22 inserted therethrough to retain said bar in position. One end of said bar 21 is pivo-tally mounted on a lever 23, the extreme lower end of said lever being pivotally mounted on the rocking bar carrying the blades 18, whereby it will be seen that by the operation of the lever 23, the bar 21 will be reciprocated, and thereby oscillate the blades 18 in their bearings on the verti cal axes. In order to retain said blades in the various adjusted positions, I provide the segmental rack 24: on the rocking bar carrying said blades, with which engages the detent 25 carried by said lever 23. From the foregoing, it will be seen that said blades are capable of adjustment both on their vertical and horizontal axes, the horizontal adjustment being individual for each blade through the medium of the adjustment of the eye-bolts 13, and the adjustment on the vertical axes of the blades being conjunctive, through the medium of the bar 21 and lever 23. As described, these hummock blades are positioned for adjustment simultaneously on their vertical axes, but it will also be understood that it is a part of my invention to provide for the individual adjustment of each blade also on its vertical axis, and to this end, I desire to provide the improved form of bearing 10 This bearing is similar to the other bearing described, in being provided with its front face corrugated and having the upper and lower flanges 11, but the upper flange thereof is extended farther than the lower, and provided On its outer edge with the arcuate upwardly extending flange 26, which flange is provided with several notches, and adapted to receive therein the right angular portion 20 of the blade. Extending through a slot in the upper flange 11 is an additional eye-bolt 27, the head of which engages the angular portion 20, and the opposite end is threaded to receive a nut 28, whereby when said nut is driven home it engages the underface of said upper flange and said blade will be held on its vertical axis in the adjusted position. In this manner, it will be seen that the teeth may be individually adj usted on the vertical and horizontal axes, so that, if desired, this latter form of socket may be provided in substitution for the first referred to form, and the means for simultaneously operating the blades by means of the lever 23 and arm 21.
As hereabove described, I have referred particularly to the hummock blades which form the essential part of my invention, and have incidentally referred to the harrow teeth on the first rocking bar. The other rocking bars immediately in the rear of the aforesaid bar, may be provided with the leveling and pulverizing blades 29 and the teeth 30, which teeth and blades extend downwardly at substantially right angles to the rocking bars, and the pulverizing blades may be secured in any preferred manner, but I desire to group several of the teeth 30 and secure the same in a manner, as hereinafter described. These groups of teeth are secured to the rocking bar 7 by providing a socket 31 of channel or U-shaped design, having the edges thereof notched, as at 32, and providing a cap or the like 33, also hav ing notches therein, adapted to register with the notches of said socket. Bolts 34, ex-
tending completely through said cap, socket and rocking bar, are threaded on their inner ends to receive the nuts not shown, and as the alining notches of the cap and socket are adapted to receive the teeth 30, it will be seen that when said nuts are tightened, said cap and socket will be drawn inwardly toward the channel or rocking bar. An additional bolt 35 extending through the cap and socket is provided on its outer end with a nut 36, whereby when said nut is tightened the cap and socket will be drawn toward one another to securely engage therewith said teeth in the alining notches. It will, therefore, be seen that the bolt 35 will clamp the head and socket together and allow adjust ment of the teeth therein and that the bolts 34: will clamp the head and socket to the rocking bar.
The rear rocking bars of the device are provided with teeth similar to the harrow teeth in the forward rocking bar and said teeth may be secured thereto in any preferred manner similar to the securing means for the teeth 16, heretofore described. I have also provided for the partial rotation of the rocking bars, and to this extent the levers 37 are provided, one for each pair of rocking bars, said levers being pivoted at their lower ends to the forward of each pair of rocking bars, and pivotally connected about midway of their lengths to the floating bar 38. These bars have the opposite ends thereof engaged with the straps 39 which extend upwardly from the rearward of each pair of rocking bars, so that when said levers are operated, each pair of rocking bars will be partially rotated simultaneously. In order to provide for the retaining of the rocking bars in adjusted positions, I provide the segmental racks 4-0 on the floating bars 38, which are adapted to be engaged by the detents ll carried by said levers 37. As stated, each pair of rocking bars is provided with a lever so that the various forms of ground treating implements may be independently brought into engagement with the ground or otherwise removed from their effective positions.
The frame 41 is carried by the side sills of the implement, and has depending therefrom a transversely extending seat 42, which seat is movable on said frame, whereby the operator of the machine may change his position so as to operate the various levers for the purposes described.
Although I have described the particular means for securing the blades 18 so that the same may be individually adjusted on their vertical axes, I do not wish to limit myself to this form, and as disclosed in Fig. 10, I may use the modified form wherein the socket 10 has the front face thereof corrugated as in the other form and the opposite face provided with the upper and lower flanges 11 and 11 respectively, the upper flange 11 being extended outwardly farther than the lower, and provided with a slot 11, said flange having its upper face also corrugated. Said flanges are also provided with the alining openings as in the other forms for the reception of the shank of the blade, and an angular collar 26 having the opening 26 inthe angular faces thereof, has one of its faces corrugated and adapted to rest upon the corrugated face of the flange 11*. The opening 26* in the vertical portion of the collar is adapted to receive therethrough the angular portion of the blade 18, and an opening in the horizontally disposed face is adapted to register with the slot 11 in the flange 11*, whereby a bolt 27 may extend therethrough and a nut 28 engage therewith. In this manner the blades may be adjusted to various positions, individually, on their vertical axes, and when once positioned will be securelyheld through the medium of this collar, nut and bolt. This last referred to form of securing means is particularly adapted for use on a cultivator when such blades as the simitar form described herein, are applied thereto.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a combined soil pulverizer and leveler containing various forms of ground treating implements, the most important of which are the sod or hummock blades, and particularly the means for securing the same to the device. It will further be seen that by providing these blades simitar shape and having the body portion thereof curvedso that the rear or effective convex edge is in a plane at an angle to the plane of the forward edge of the blade, these blades are an improvement over the ones contained in my former patent. It will still further be seen that I have provided means for the adjustment of these blades, both on their horizontal and vertical axes, and it will still further be seen that I have pro vided for adjustment on the vertical axis individually and for the adjustment thereof conjunctively. Furthermore, it will be appreciated that these improved means for securing the blades in position, thereby allowing individual adjustment on the vertical axes, are an improvement upon the means for securing the blades as disclosed and described in my former patent. It will still further be seen that the means I have provided for the securing of the blade to the device is an extremely durable and effective one as well as being inexpensive to manufacture.
Although I have stated hereabove that the hummock blades are arcuate in cross section, as shown in Fig. 8, it must be here stated that the arcuate portion only extends from the upper portion thereof to a point just beyond the soil line, thereby leaving the end portions 18 of the blades flat. In this manner, the soil is not adapted to clog and be retained on the blades.
As shown in the drawings, the blades 29 are prismatic and described in the specification as pulverizing and leveling blades, but it will be understood that said blades may be removed and spaced groups of teeth such as 30 substituted therefor, if desired, and in fact, any of the teeth hereabove described as specifically arranged, may be rearranged and any of the other teeth or blades substituted therefor without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame, and a bar mounted therein; of a socket mounted on said bar, a bearing for said socket, a blade having an upwardly extending shank extending through said bearing, means to mount said blade, bearing and socket on the bar to allow oscillatory movement of the blade on one of its axes, and additional means cooperating with said shank to oscillate the blade on its other axis.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame; of a oar mounted therein, a socket mounted on said bar, a bearing for said socket, a blade having an upwardly extending shank thereon carried by the bearing, a lug at right angles to said shank, means engaging said shank, bearing and socket to mount the same on the bar and allow oscillatory movement of said blade on one of its axes, and additional means engaging said lug to allow similar movement of the blade on its other axis.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a bar; of a blade designed arcuately in cross-section, said blade being provided with an upwardly extending shank, and a lug at right angles to the extremity of said shank, means engaging said shank to secure the blade to the bar and allow oscillatory movement of the same on its horizontal axis, and additional means cooperating with said lugs to provide for a similar movement of the blade on its vertical axis.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a bar; of a socket mounted thereon, a bearing for said socket having rearwardly extending flanges, a blade having a shank thereon extending through said bearing, means engaging said shank, bearing and socket to secure the same to said bar and allow oscillatory movement of the blade on one of its axes, and additional means coiiperating with a portion of said shank and one of the flanges of said bearing to provide for a similar movement of the blade on the other of its axes.
5. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a bar; of a socket mounted on said bar, a bearing for the socket having rearwardly extending flanges, a ground treating implement having the upwardly extending shank thereon mounted in said bearing, means engaging said shank, bearing and socket to secure the same to the bar and allow oscillatory movement of the implement on its horizontal axis, said shank being provided with a lug at right angles thereto, and means cooperating with said lug and one of the flanges of the bearing to provide for the oscillatory movement of the implement on its other axis.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bar; of a socket mounted thereon, a bearing for said socket having one of its faces provided with a pair of spaced apart flanges, the upper of which is bent and provided with a plurality of notches thereon, a blade having a shank thereozn extending through said flanges, said shank being provided with a lug at right angles thereto, means engaging said shank, bearing and socket to secure the same to the bar and allow oscillatory movement of the implement on one of its axes, and means cooperating with said lug and the upper of said flanges to secure the same in any of said notches, said latter means permitting of the oscillatory movement of said blade on the other of its axes.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bar; of a socket mounted thereon, a bearing for said socket having the outer face thereof provided with a pair of spaced apart flanges, the upper of said flanges being provided with a slot and having a portion thereof bent upwardly and provided with a plurality of notches, a blade having a shank thereon extending through said flanges, means engaging said shank, bearing and socket to secure the same to said bar and allow oscillatory movement of said blade on one of its axes, said shank being provided with a lug at right angles thereto, an eye bolt receiving said lug therethrough and extending through the slot in said flange, and means cooperating with said eye bolt and the under face of the flange having the slot therein to lock said lug in any of said notches.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bar; of a socket mounted thereon, said socket having one of its faces serrated, a bearing for said socket also hav ing one of its faces serrated and adapted to be engaged with the serrated face of said socket, said bearing having the opposite face thereof provided with an upper and a lower flange, the upper flange being provided with an arcuate slot and an upwardly bent portion having notches therein, a blade having a shank thereon extending through the flanges of said bearing, said shank being provided With a laterally extending lug, an eye bolt receiving said shank therethrough and extending through said socket and bearing to secure the same on said bar and allow oscillatory movement of the blade on one of: its axes, an additional eye bolt receiving said lug therethrough and extending through the slot in said upper flange, and means engaging the free end of said bolt and the under face of said last mentioned flange to lock said lug in any of the aforesaid notches, whereby said blade may be held in any adjusted position and capable of adjustment on the other of its axes.
