a. citizen of the- United States, residing at .Cleveland,.in the county of Cuyahoga andV State of Ohio, have invented a certain new. .fand useful Improvement in Signaling Mech- Qanisms, ofv which the following is a full,"

This invention relates to wind instrumeiits, and more particularly to instruments which may be employed.v with vehicles, suchas automobiles, and operated by thepressure lof a fluid, as the exhaust of the engines of such vehicles, to sound an alarm.
' The objects of thepresent invention'are to providey anfinstrument'of this kind coniprising a plurality of. indi\'idua'l sounding or signaling members, each being provided v'with an independent valve for supplying and cutting od the ow`of pressure fluid thereto; also to provide an instrument of this kind with1 convenient and efficient means for operating such valves; also to rovide an Iinstrument of this kind with eiicien't means whereby themembers may beoperated individually and whereby diiferent ygroups ofsaid members may be selected and simultaneously operated toproduce signalsy -or musical chords.

Any suitable Inumber of horns may be connected to this'header. Six such horns .are shown in the drawing, but groups Comprising various numbers of horns may 'be employed, for instance, 'four, or ten. header and horns are shown as located above the fender 2, but the position in which the horns will be placed may be varied to suit the convenience lof the operator and the par"- ticular construction of the automobile with cated stopshoulders 8 and, preferably cast therewith. `10 denotes a valve stem which extends through -lthe branch connection 6, having its lower end journaled in a projection 11l from such. branch. This stem is' provided withV a slot for the reception of a disk 12, the disk being secured in1 place by means of a lsuitable number of screws 13.
At its upperlend lthe'stem is provided with' an operating disk 14, said disk having a series of apertures 15 adjacent to the periphery thereof, for the reception of a screw or pin' 16. 17 denotes a stopprojecting from the upper. endof the valve st em beneath the disk 14 and'adapted to engage the .side of lthe vehicle and connected to the env 'its casing at 4C. The outer end of the: pipe .nections 6,each connected to the inlet end of stop shoulders 8 and 9. 18y denotes a screw connecting the disk -to thestop 17 and thus to thevalve stem and also 'serving as a,
means for `connecting a spiral spring 19 to thevalve stem and as a means for adjustably connecting the valve tothe key-board. One
end of the spring is connected to the lower end ofthe scre'vv 18 and its opposite' end'to the stop shoulder 9. The parts are-'so arranged that, when' the stop 17 is in engage- 'ment with the shoulder 9, the valve disk 12 extends across theI bore of the branch con nection 6, closing thesame. IVith the cons-truction'thus far described, the operator will be enabled to play one or y more of the horns at willtoproduce a signal or a chord, or, if desirable,vto play a musical selection.
It is often desirable to mechanically op-l erate a plurality of horns in unison,. to produce a chord or a signal composed of a pluralityof individual notes. To enable the,
operator to secure this result,'.I provide a shaft 29 having a plurality v.of projectionsthereon and adapted to engage the lever arms 25 and operate different combinations pf said lever arms and of the horns, according be rotated.
