EDVIABD B.
HESS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR '10 ROYAL TYPEWRITEB, COMPANY,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION 915 NE'W TYEE-WRITING MACHINE.
Application filed April 24, 1909.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9,1912.
Serial No. 491,968.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD B. Hnss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in TypedVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates primarily to ribbon feed devices of the general character disclosed in Letters Patent No. 8.392% granted to me July 9, 1907.
The object is in an organization of the character disclosed in this patent to effect the driving of the ribbon feed devices from the universal bar.
Figure 1, is a top plan view of so much of a. typewriting machine as is deemed desirable to illustrate this invention. Fig. 2, a bottom plan view; Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section on the line 3, 3, of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a transverse vertical section on the line 4, 4, of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, an enlarged detail view showing the ribbon feed devices driving paw]. mounted on the universal bar frame; and Fig. 6, a similar view showing the end of the pawl and the ratchet wheel that it drives.
Figs. 1, 2, and 3 show the same general arrangement and means for shifting the driving devices from one ribbon bobbin to another as are disclosed in the beforementioned Letters Patent No. 859294 and they do not therefore require description in that respect.
In Fig. 4, the end of the drive shaft (Z adjacent the worm e (which shaft in the jhereinbefore mentioned patent is shown as driven from the spring barrel of the machine but in the present invention is driven from the universal bar as will be hereinafter described) is carried in the end of a lever arm a rocking about a horizontal pivot Z) and extending through the side plate of the 1nachine. When the outer end of this lever is depressed the end of the drive shaft (Z is raised to carry the worm 6 into engagement with the gear to that drives the left hand ribbon bobbin, and when the outer end of the lever is elevated the worm is carried into engagement with the gear f that drives through transverse shaft f the right hand ribbon bobbin. The lever is held in either of its positions by a pivoted notched plate 0 to the back of which is applied a spring 0 and in the front face of which are two notches with which a pin a on the side of the lever engages. it-h the foregoing explanation, it may be assumed that the construction of the ribbon driving devices is otherwise the same as shown and described in said Letters Patent with the exception that shaft (Z carrying the worm e is driven from the universal bar of the machine and not from the spring barrel as in the patent. The universal g is carried in the ends of pendant swinging arms 70 rocking about or with a shaft 7L extending between the side plates of the frame in rear of the spring barrel. Between the universal bar and the shaft it, the side arms it are connected about midway of the distance by a rod 2' embraced by the bifurcated end of a link 2" that operates the ribbon vibrator when the universal bar is swung forward on depression of the key levers. A universal bar so arranged together with the means of operating it on depression of the keys is contained in the known Standard machine made by the Royal Typewriter Company.
U11 one of the hanging arms h on which the universal bar is carried is pivoted at 7' between the universal. bar and the transverse bar 2' a driving pawl 75 the forwardly extending arm of which lies across the cireumferenee of the ratchet wheel on on the drive shaft (3. ln rear of pivot 7' this driving pawl is extended and curved to form a cam face that engages a pin a extending laterally from a forwardly projecting bracket 0 attached to the rear plate of the machine. A coiled spring 7) has one end applied to the driving pawl 70 in front of its pivot, and its other end attached to a laterally projecting pin p on the hanger or arm A and tends by its reaction to draw up ward the forwardly projecting portion of the pawl and also to draw it against the periphery of ratchet wheel on. As the universal bar is swung forward the curved rear part of the driving pawl runs down on the pin a. and the other end of the -paw.-. is permitted to rise. As the universal bar moves rearwardly the curved face of the rear portion of the driving pawl runs in contact with pin a and the forward arm on part 01 the pawl is forced downwardly thus advancing the ratchet wheel. There is sufficient play of the pawl upon its bearing to permit its action in the manner described.
The spring barrel is wound and its tension ad usted as follows. The inner end of the spring is attached to a forwardly extending shaft 9 that carries at its front end a screw driver by which the worm may be rotated to wind or adjust the tension of the spring within the casing a of the spring barrel.
I claim 1. Ribbon bobbins from one to the other of which the ribbon passes, their driving devices, a driving shaft equipped with a gear adapted to engage the driving devices of either bobbin, means for shifting the shaft laterally of its length to move it from engagement with the driving devices of one bobbin into engagement with those of the other, a ratchet wheel driving said shaft, :1 driving pawl therefor, a universal bar located at the rear of the machine movable fore and aft of the machine, and means whereby the pawl is actuated to drive the ratchet wheel as the universal bar moves back and forth.
2. Ribbon bobbin driving devices for a typewriting machine, comprising a driving shaft (Z, a ratchet wheel thereon a universal bar adapted to swing fore and aft of the machine, a driving pawl acting upon the ratchet wheel and mounted upon a pivot movable with the universal bar, a spring for retaining the pawl in engagement with the periphery of the ratchet wheel and for returning it to normal position, a cam rear- Copies of this patent may be obtained for wardly extending from the driving pawl and a fixed surface against which it 0perates.
S. Ribbon bobbin driving mechanism for a typewriting machine, comprising pendant swinging arms, a universal bar carried thereby, a ribbon bobbin driving shaft d, a ratchet wheel thereon, a driving pawl therefor pivoted to one of said pending arms, a spring applied thereto serving to hold the driving pawl in engagement with the periphery of the ratchet wheel and to return the pawl to normal position, a cam extension from the pawl and a fixed surface against which it operates.
a. Ribbon bobbin driving mechanism for typewriting machines, comprising a driven bobbin driving shaft one end of which is adapted to be moved laterally, a worm on that end of the shaft, ribbon bobbin driving gears one for each bobbin between which the worm is disposed and either of which is adapted to be driven thereby, a rocking lever in which one end of the driving shaft is mounted, said lever extending through the side plate of the machine, and a notched spring-pressed retaining arm for holding the lever in either of two positions to which it may be adjusted in one of which one of the ribbon bobbins is driven, and in the other of which the other ribbon bobbin is driven in reverse direction.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed by name.
