To all whom, it 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, HANS MRTZSCH, a subject of the Emperor of Germany,residing at Detroit, in the county of Il'ayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Ilnprovements in Explosion- Engines, of which the following is-a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to explosion engines and has for its special object the increase in power of the engine without materially increasing the dimensions thereof.
To this end the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawingswFigure 1 is a vertical cross section through the engine; Fig. 2 is a section at right angles to Fig. 1 in the plane of the valves; and Fig. 3 illustrates a slightly modified construction.
My improved construction comprises es sentially a cylinder having' bores of diderent dimensions in different portions thereof, and a single piston having portions fitting the respective bores connected by a pitrnan to a single crank. Both the portion of the cylinder of the small bore and the portion of the larger bore surrounding the smaller piston are employed as explosive chambers, and the general construction and organization of the parts is such that the explosions alternate in the two portions of the cylinder, and consequently an impulse is given for each down stroke of the piston.
As illustrated, A is the upper or small bore and B is the lower or large bore of the cylinder, and C and D are portions of the piston respectively fitting said bores. Each portion of this piston is suitably packed, as
by the rings E and E', while the body of the is hollow and has therein the wrist piston which is connected to the pitman G.
pin F 'The cylinder is mounted upon a suitable crank case H, wit-hin which 1s arranged the crank shaft I having the crank J, while at oneside of the crank is arranged a cam shaft K for operating the valves. These valves are arranged in lateral projections of the engine cylinder respectively communieating with the upper ends of the bores of different diameter. The upper lateral projection L contains the inlet andexhaust valves M and N preferably 'arranged in the planeet the cam shaft, while the 'lower lateral projection L is provided with sirmlar inlet and exhaust valves M and N.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the upper and lower valves are out of alinement with each other, but all are arranged in the plane of the cam shaft, and separate cams K upon this shaft are employed for actuating separate valve rods O for these valves.,
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 3, the upper and lower valves are. in alinement with each other and are operated \by the same cams, the lower valve being operated by a direct rod connection O extending upward from the cams, while the upper valves are operated through the medium of the rod O extending downward from the lower side of the cams and transmitting their movement through levers I) to upwardly extending rods Q connecting with the upper valves. A water jacket R preferably formed integral with the cylinder' surrounds both of the bores thereof.

`What I claim as my invention'is:
1. In an explosion engine, a cylinder having portions of different diameters, a piston having portions of different diameters fitting the respective portions of the cylinder, lateral projections upon the cylinder above each of the portions of the latter forming independent chambers communicating with the cylinder portions, valve chambers in each of said chambers, inlet and exhaust valves in said valveI chambers, igniters communicating with erid lateral projections, and means for operating each set of valves alternately whereby the explosions in the respective portions of said cylinder are alternated.
