WILLIAM FRIESE-GREENE, F BRIGHTON, ENGLAND.
AIR-CAR on amsmr.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed July 9, 1912.
Application filed February 23, 1909. Serial No. 479,433.
. To all whom, it may concern Be. it known that I, lVILLiAM Fmnsn- GREENE, of 203- Western road Brighton, Sussex, England, photographer, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Air-Cars or Airships, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to air cars or air ships and has for its object to provide means whereby the car or ship may be maintained in equilibrium and on an even course.
An air ship or air car made in accord-.
ance with this invention is provided with two elongated gas bags and with one or more gyroscopes having-their fly wheels disposed in the vertical plane in which the longitudinal of the car is disposed or planes parallel therewith and in some cases one or more gyroscopes having theiraxes in the vertical plane are provided. The gas bags maybe disposed one above the other if desired.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a diagrammatic elevation of an air ship made in accordance with this invention in which the gas bags are disposed side by side; Fig. 2 is an end View;
a a are two gas bags disposed side by side and adapted to be inflated by hydrogen or other suitable gas.
b is agyroscope having its spindle c dis-- posed in the central vertical plane in which the longitudinal axis of the car lies; (Z is a second gyroscope having its spindle in the horizontal plane; 6 is a propeller; 7' g and h are motors for driving the gyroscopcs and propeller; j are horizontal members secured to the gas bags for supporting the frame work It 7: of the car.
'm, is a vane pivoted on a horizontal pin 72. l 0 is a rudder pivoted on a vertical pin 7).
One of the gyroscopes b and the motor f are mounted on a platform 1' pivoted at s so that they can be swung in a vertical plane by means of the cords t passing around a pulley u or by other suitable means.
Between the horizontal members j 7' is disposed a wire or rod upon which is mounted a weight g which can be moved lengthwise of the vessel by any suitable means for the purpose of balancing or tipping the air The flame forming and supporting the car lies vertically below the centers of the bags and extends laterally of the longitudinal axis of the air ship to a width not greater than half the diameter of one of the ags.
In use one or both of the gyroscopes are kept spinning and great stability of the air ship is effected. The platform r-is normally horizontal and the spindle of the gyroscope b is vertical. Should it be desired to change the course of the air ship from one horizontal plane to another it may be ellected by tilting the platform 7' so that the pindle c oi the gyroscope b is inclined to the horizontal plane. the course of the vessel in the vertical plane being modified more or less depending on the difference in the angle between the axis of the gyroscope and that of the airship. The course of the air ship can also be changed by movement of the vane m and rudder.
'lvhat I claim and desire Letters Patent is:--
1. In air ships the combination of two elongated gas bags and a gyroscope disposed so that its spindle lies in the same vertical plane as the longitudinal axis of the air ship, a. platform pivoted in av horizontal plane for supporting said gyroscope, and .means for applying force between said platform and air ship' whereby the air ship may be moved in the vertical plane around the spindle ot the gyroscope and the inclination of the air ship in the. horizontal plane thereby controlled, =said gyroscope acting as a fixed body against which force may be applied to move said air ship.
2. In air ships the combination of: two elongated. gas bags and a gyroscope disposed to secure by so that its spindle normally lies in the same vertical plane as the longitudinal axis of the air ship, a platform pivoted in a horizontal plane for supporting said gyroscope, means for-applying force between said platform and air ship whereby the air ship may be moved in the vertical plane around the spindle of the gyroscope and the inclination of the air ship in the horizontal plane thereby controlled. said gyroscope acting as a fixed body against which force may be applied to move said air ship, and a gyroscope with its spindle in a horizontal plane.
3.111 air ships the combination of an elongated gas field, and a gyroscope disposed so that its spindle lies in the same applied to move said air ship.
' elongated gas bags, a
vertical plane as the longitudinal axis of the air ship, a platform pivoted in a horizontal plane for supporting said gyroscope, means for applying force between said platform and air ship whereby the air ship may be moved in the vertical plane around the spindle of the gyroscope and the inclination of the air ship in the horizontal plane thereby controlled, said gyroscope acting as a fixed body against which force may be at. In air ships the combination of two frame disposed vertically below the bags so that it extends 1aterally of the longitudinal axis of the'air ship to a Width not greater than half the diameter of one of the gas bags and-a gyroscope disposed so that its spindle lies in the same vertical plane as the longitudinal axis of the air ship, and means for moving the spindle of the gyroscope in the vertical plane.
elongated gas bags, a frame disposed vertically below the bags so that itextends laterally of. the longitudinal axis of the air ship to a Width not greater than half the diameter of one of the gas bags, and a gyroscope disposed so that its spindle normally lies in the same vertical plane as the longitudinal axis of the air ship, and a gyroscope with its spindle in a horizontal plane.
5. In .air ships the combination of two In 'witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
