citizen of the United States, residing at Hoquiam, in the county of Chehalis and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spark-./f'trrest-v ers, of which the following is a specification. My invention is an improvement in spark arresters, and has for its objectthe provision of a simple inexpensive device of the character spccitied, capable of attachment to any stack without change in the same, and without diminishing thedraft, by means ot which the unconsumed solid matters ejected from the stack will be held in the arrester.
1n the drawings, Figure 1 is a vert-ical lsection of the spark arresterpositioned on a smoke stack and embodying the invention or improvement. Fi 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, an Fig. 3 is a plan View of the damper.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in `place on the upper end of a stack 1, andcomprises a collar or cylinder' 2, seated around the upper end of the stack, and secured to t-he stack, by means of bolts and nuts 3. A plurality of bracket arms is secured in spaced relation to the collar, each arm consisting of two laterally oiiset vertical portions 4 and 5, connected by a horizontal portion 6. The port-ion 4 of each bracket is secured to the outer face of the ring, by bolts or rivets 7, and the portions 5 and 6 ot' each bracket are braced by a brace 8. En end of the brace is bent at an angle to the main portion, as shown at 9, to tit against the inner face of portion 5, and against the upper face of portion 6, and bolts 10 are passed through the said portions and the ends 9, and are engaged by nuts 11. The upper end of each bracket 4 5 is provided with an inwardly extending arm '12, approximately parallel with the connecting portion G, and each arm extends radially inward, beyond the collar 2. A covering 13 of perforate material, as for `instance wire gauze, is arranged outsidethe brackets, and the arms 12, extending from the inner ends ot the said arms 12 to approximately the center of collar 2. The lower end of the covering, which is of cylindrieal forni arotmd the portions 5 of the brackets, and' truste" conical or tapering below the said portions, is secured to the collar by a split clamping Jring 14. The ends of lthe ring are provided with radial lugs 15, which may be clamped together by a bolt or like means. The upper end of the covering fits closely on the arms 12 and may be secured to the said arms in any suitable manner. A ring 16 is arranged below the arms 12, at their inner ends, and the inner edge of the ring is iiush with the inner ends of the arms. An angle bracket 17-18 is secured to one of the arms 12, by means of bolts or rivets 19, engaging the arm and the portion 17 ot the bracket, and the other port-ion 18 oi the bracket is provided with a bearing 20. A lever 21 is pivoted to the bearing, intermediate theends of the lever, and an' operating rod 22 is engaged with a ring 23, at the outer end of t-he lever. Across bar 24 is arranged transversely of the collar 2, at its upper end, cach end of the bar being bent downwardly at a right angle to the main portion as shown at 25, and secured to the Ainner face ot the collar by bolts andnuts 26. The crossv bar is provided with a central bearing 27, at the axis of the stack, and a rod 28 is slidable in the bearing. A link- 29 connects the upper end of the rod to the inner end ot' the lever 21. The upper end of the rod is split to receive one end oi the link, and a pin 30 passes through the link and end of the rod. The upper end of the link is forked to engage the lever end, and a pin 31 passes through the arms of the fork and the link. It will be evident that when the lever is swung by the rod 22, thc rod 2S will be raised or lowered, depending upon the direction of movement ot' the lever. A cover or damper plate 823 of circular form is connected to the rod, by means of the mechanism shown in Fig. 3. The plate is provided with a central opening for the rod 28, and the said rod is provided with a transverse opening, through which passes a pin 34. A .bearing is secured to the upper tace of the plate, on cach side of the rod, and the ends of thc pin are journaled in the bearings. By means of the lever; 21, the plate may be moved from the full line position.of Fig. 1, to either of the dotted line positions of the said figure. Since the plate is free to swing laterally within limits, 1t will always seat closely on the upper end ot the collar, or against the under side of ring 16. When seated on the upper end of the collar, the stack is clospld, and when against the ring the opening t rough the perforate Uil hood is closed, so that all of the products of combustion from the stack must pass The defect of the usual form of sparirarrester is that thev draftis lessened to such an extent that it is' diliieult to start 'a fire and to keepit going after starting. Q
With the improvement the draft 1s not `lessened, t-he annular passage around the .plate 33 being of as great aggregate area as that of the stack, or. even greater. In addition the pert'orate hpod increases this area. When starting the tire, the damper or plate 33 is lowered, to'approximately the position of Fig; 1.- After the tire is burning, the plate` is raised to' close the opening from the hood.` k
The devicemay be applied to any stack, without change in the stack, and a'fordsa perfect protection. The improvement is in fact a hood of perforate material inclosing the top of the stack and having an outlet in linewith the axis of the stack, and a damper for closing the outlet, movable between the end of the stack and the outlet..
I claim,
1. ,A spark arrester comprising a collar adapted to tit the top of the stack, and having means whereby it may be secured to the stack, a plurality ot brackets secured to the collar, each comprising two connected radially offset vertical portions, one of said portions being secured to the collar, each oi the other of the said :portions haring `a radial inwardly extending arm at its upper end, a ring connecting the inner ends of the arms, a hood of perforate material supported on the brackets, said hood being 'of approximately cylindrical form, the upper end tit) .thereof being secured to'the ring, a split .ring for clamping the lower end to the collar, and a damper plate movablebetween the upper end of the collar and the ring, said plate being circular and having a eentral opening, a rod passing through the opening, a cross bararr'anged,transversely of t-he collar and provided with a central bearing for the rod, a bracket arm on one of the brackets. a leverpivoted intermediate its ends to the bracket arm. an operating rod connected to the -outer end ot' the lever, a link connecting the inner end to the upper end of the rod, a pair of alined bearings1 arranged transversely of the plate, and a' pin journaled in the bearings, the rod having a transverse opening for the pin.
2. A spark arrester comprising a collar adapted to .tit the top of the stack, and having means whereby it may be secured to the stack, a plurality of brackets secured to the collar, each comprising two connected radially offset vertical portions, one of said portions being secured to the collar, each of the other of the said portions having a radial inwardly extending arm at-its' upper end, a ring connecting the inner ends of the arms, a hood of perforate material supported on the brackets,l said hood being of approximately cylindrical form, the upper end thereof being secured to the ring, a split ring for clamping the lower end to the co1- soy lar, and a damper plate movable between the upper end of the collar and the ring, said plate being circular and having a central opening, a rod passing through the opening, a cross bar arranged transversely of the collar and provided with a central bearing for the rod, a bracket arm on one of the brackets, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends tothe bracket arm, an operating rod connected. tothe outery end of the lever, a link connecting the inner end to the upper end of the rod, and a connection between the rod and the plate.
3. A'spark arrester comprising a collar adapted to tit the top of the stack, and having means whereby it may be secured to the stack, a plurality of brackets secured tov the collar, each comprising two connected radially offset vertical portions, one of said portions being secured to the collar, each of' the other of the said portions having a radial inwardly extending arm at its upper end, a ring connecting the inner ends of the arms. a hood of perfor-atc material supported on the brackets, said` hood being of ap-. proximately cylindrical form, the upper end thereotbeing. secured to the ring, a split 'ring for clamping the lower end to the collar, and a damper plate movable between the upper end ot the collar and the ring, said plate being circular and having acontral opening, a rod passing through the opening, a cross bar arranged transversely ot the collar and provided with a central bearing 'For the rod, a. connection betweenv the rod a-nd the plate. and means for moving` the rod vertically.
4.
