To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that we, JOHN W. LEONARD and HARRY E. BROWN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Washington, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Oil-VVell Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to clutches to be applied to machinery adapted to be driven by internal combustion engines, and has for its object to provide an apparatus which may be quickly adjusted to the shaft of a steam engine, the cylinder of which has been replaced by one of the internal combustion type, with the bearing .of the extended shaft on which the clutch is mounted, held in rigid relationship to the cylinder of the engine on a pivoted support to prevent fracture of the shaft by the working of the engine on its bed, relatively to the said bearing. The clutch has outer disks secured to the shaft, between which are disposed two pulleys which are separated by a third disk secured to a sleeve mounted on the shaft, there being also a second disk secured-to the sleeve. One of the outer disks has ears and 'thereare also ears on the said second disk secured to the sleeve, which project through the said outer disk, dogs being pivoted to the ears; the dogs pivoted to the ears on the outer disks engaging studs on the said second disk and the dogs pivoted to the ears on the said second disk engaging the studs on the outer disk to clamp either of the pulleys as desired, means being provided for operating the dogs. A grooved pulley is secured to the band wheel, a belt being connected with the band wheel and a rope being connected with the grooved pulley, the belt being also disposed around a. pulley of the clutch and the rope being crossed and disposed around a grooved pulley of the clutch.
In this specification we will describe the preferred form of our invention, but it will be understood that we do not limit ourselves thereto, as we consider ourselves to be entitled to all forms and embodiments of the erence indicate corresponding parts in all i the figures, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation showing our invention as applied to oil well machinery; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view showing the extension shaft and the clutch as applied to the engine; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view showing the clutch Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 44.- of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is an elevation of the pivoted support for the outer bearing for the extension shaft; Fig. 7 is an elevation of the pulley which is bolted to the band wheel; and Fig. 8 is a sectional view on the line 88 of Fig. 7.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the oil well apparatus 10 is of the usual type and it is driven by a cable 11, which is disposed on a pulley 12, journaled inthe oil well apparatus, the cable 11 also being disposed on a pulley on a band wheel 13, and abelt 14 disposed on a pulley on-the band wheel 13 and also disposed on a pulley 15 of the clutch, connects the engine with the" band wheel, so that when the engine is in operation it will transmit power to the band wheel and the band wheel will transmit power to the oil well apparatus 10, by means of the cable 11 and the pulley 12.
In the oil well fields at the present time steam engines are used, and the belt 14 is disposed on a. pulley secured to the shaft 16 of the engine, but it will be understood that this is impossible when an internal combustion engine is used, because of "the difiiculty in reversing the engine.
Our invention has in view the application of a cylinder of' an internal combustion engine to be secured to the old engine bed,
fromwhich a steam cylinder has been re- I moved, and the application of the improvements which will hereafter be described in full, which Will permit the band wheel 13 to be reversed while the engine is continuingin operation, with the shaft 16, which is the old steam engine shaft, rotating in the same direction. This we do by providing'a second pulley 17 'which is connected by a crossed cable 18 with a pulley on the band wheel 13. The pulley 17 is greater in diameter than the pulley 15, and inasmuch as the cable 18 is disposed on a smaller pulley on the band wheel than that on which the belt 14 is disposed, it will be seen that when the pulley 17 is connected with the engine, the oil well ap aratus will be driven more rapidly, the pulley 17 and the cable 18 "being used to lower devices into the oil well, while the pulley 15 with its belt 14is usedto lift tools and material from the well.
Keyed on the shaft 16 is a sleeve 19, the sleeve 19 having a disk 20 disposed in close proximity to the inner bearing, while to the outer end ofthe sleeve is secured an extension shaft 21, which at its outer end is journaled in a bearing 22, which is mounted on a support 23, which is pivoted to a bed 24. The support 23. is divided into two sections, the lower one having a bolt 26 secured thereto, the bolt 26 being disposed in a slot 27 in the upper member. Thls construction is provided to permit the adjustment of the height of the bearing 22. A tie rod 28 is bolted to a flange 29 secured to the bearing,
' the other end of the tie rod being secured to an engine cylinder 30. An extension rod 31 is secured to the engine frame 32 and to the tie rod 28, to keep the tie rod extended at the point where it is secured to the bearing. These features are provided to prevent any breakage of the shaft by any abnormal vibrations of the engine relatively to the shaft, the tie rod making certain that at all times the shaft will be disposed in proper relationship to the engine cylinder, its piston and connecting rod. On the extension shaft 21, close to the sleeve 19-is disposed a second sleeve 33, there being disks 34 and 35, one integral with and the other attached to said sleeve. There is also a disk 36 which is secured to the extension shaft 21. On the sleeve 19, between the disks 20 and 34, is disposed the pulley 15, the sides of the disks 20 and 34 converging toward their peripheries and the sides of the pulley 15 converging toward the shaft, so that the disks 20 and 34 will fit the sides of the pulley snugly. The pulley 17 is mounted on the sleeve 33, and against one of its sides a side of the disk 34 is disposed, the

On the extension shaft 21is disposed a collar 49, the collar 49 having an annular groove 50 in an extension 51. The collar 49 is provided to engage an arm 52 of the dog 41'ai1d an arni 53 of the dog 45, the 'arm 53 being disposed at one side of the collar andthe arm 52 being disposed at the other side.
In the groove'50 is disposed a boss 54, mounted on'an arm 55, the arm 55 being pivoted to a lever 56'which is secured to a 'cap 57 disposed on the journal 22. There is a spiral groove 58 in the bearing 22 and in is secured to the cap 57, so that when the lever 56 is operated, the cap 57 will be forced either'inwardly or outwardly, therethis groove 58 is disposed a boss 59,; which I '75 by by means of the arm 55, with its boss 54,

In using our invention, the engine is started, and when it is desired to lift material from the oil well, the cap 57, by means of the lever 56, is moved outwardly, thereby carrying outwardly the collar 49 which in turn moves outwardly the arms 53 and the dogs '45, the heads; 46 of which push against the studs 47, and as the dogs 45 are pivoted to the cars 44 on the disk.36, the
disk 35 with its sleeve 33 and its disk 34 are moved away from the disk 36 so that the disk 34 will press against the pulley 15 and thereby bind it against the 20 which as has been stated, is secured to the sleeve 19 keyed to the shaft 16. By this means the pulley 15 will rotate, driving the belt 14, which is mounted on a pulley on the band wheel 13, in the usual manner.-
When the direction of the oil well apparatus is to be reversed, by means of the lever 56, the collar 49 is moved inwardly, the mner surface of the collar 49 being rounded so thatit will lift the arms 52 of the dogs 41, and as the heads 42 of the said dogscontact with the studs 43, the dogs 41, which. are pivoted to cars 40 secured to the-disk 35 will move the disk 35 with its sleeve 33 and its disk 34 outwardly so that the disk 34 will press the pulley 17 against theflange 38 on the disk 36, at the same time releasing the pulley 15 so that it is no long: driven by means of the disk 20. By action the pulley 17 is driven by means of frictional contact with the flange 38 on the disk 36, the disk 36 being secured to the extension shaft 21 as has been set forth.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In an oil well apparatus, a shaft, an outer disk secure'd'to the shaft to turn therewith, a second outer disk, a sleeve mounted on the shaft, two disks secured-to the sleeve, a pulley mounted between the two last named disks, a second pulley mounted between one of the two last named disks and one of theouter-disks, and means for moving-the sleeve'to and from the second outer disk, one of thevouter disks being adapted to-engage a surface of-the firstnamed pulley, the sleeve and the outer disk being adapted for rotating with the shaft, 'and a flange on the second outer disk which is adapted for engaging the surface of the second pulley.

In an attachment for oil well apparatus, a shaft, a disk secured to theshaft, a sleeve, a disk secured to the sleeve, dogs pivoted to one of the disks, studs mounted on the other disk which project through openings in thedisk to which thedogs are pivoted, the studs being adapted to be engaged by the-"dogs, an additional disk secured to the sleeve at a distance from the first-mentioned disks, a pulley disposed on the sleeve between the two disks secured thereto, and a collar disposed on the shaft adapted to engage the dogs to operate them.
