EDWARD W. CARNES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
DOUGH-CUTTER. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Application filed April 5 1911. Serial No. 619,073.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. Cannes, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dough-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dough cutters.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined biscuit and doughnut cutter of a simple and eflicient construction.
My invention consists in an outer or main cutter having a central opening in its top and provided with a central tubular handle or sleeve in connection with a sliding or telescopic inner cutter fitting in the handle sleeve of the outer or main cutter, and provided with a stop shoulder at its upper end engaging a stop shoulder on the handle sleeve of the main cutter to register the cutting'edge of the inner cutter with that of the outer cutter when the device is used for cutting doughnuts the inner cutter being adapted to slide upward in the'handle sleeve out of the way when the cutter is used for cutting biscuits, cakes, etc., that have no central opening.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a combined biscuit and doughnut cutter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central, vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 33 of F i 2. Fig. 4 is a detail, perspective view 0 the inner cutter. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view and Fig. 6 is a sectional view, similar to Fig. 2, but showing the inner cutter slipped upward in position for use for cutting biscuits.
In the drawing, 1 represents the outer or main cutter, preferably of drawn sheet metal in a singlepiece or seamless construction, and having its top 2 furnished with a central opening 3 to which is secured a central handle sleeve 4 by annular seam flanges 5, 6 which embrace the edge of the top 2 of the outer cutter surrounding the central opening therein. The central andle sleeve 4 is provided at its upper end with an annular external rolled rim 7 to form a stop shoulder to register the inner sliding or telescopic cutter 8 with the outer cutter 1. The inner sliding cutter 8 is oftubular or cylindric form with a free space 9 between its meeting longitudinal edges 10, 11 to cause the cutter S to fit with a spring action within the handle sleeve 5 and frictionally grip the same. The inner sliding cutter 8 is provided at its'upper end with an annular rolled rim or stop shoulder 12 which engages the stop shoulder 8 of the handle sleeve to cause the lower cutting edge 13 of the inner cutter 8 to accurately register with the cutting edge 14 of the outer or main cutter 1.
When the device is used for cutting doughnuts or other articles of a ring shape or having central openings, the inner sliding cutter 8 is pushed down in the handle sleeve 4 until the stop shoulders 7, 12 engage, thus bringing the cutting edges 13, 14 of both cutters into registry with each other or in the sameplane'.
When the cutter is used for cutting hiscuits, cakes, or other articles having no central openings, the inner cutter 8 is slipped up in the handle sleeve into the position shown in Fig.6;
1. A combined biscuit andidoughnut cuttcr comprising a main cutter having a flat top with a central opening therein provided with a central handle sleeve secured thereto, and a telescopic inner cutter fitting in said handle sleeve, said telescbpic inner cutter being provided wit/Him open space between its longitudinal edges whereby the inner cutter fits .with a spring action within the central handle sleeve, said inner cuttr being removable-from the top of the central handle sleeve, said inner cutter and handle sleeve being provided with intercugaging stop shoulders to register the cutting cdge of the inner cutter with that of trail epening in its top and provided with e inner cutter with that of the outer cutter, celntral handle sleeve sl eicured thematicham?1 1& 9substanti2 1fl 3.,a specified. te eseopic inner cutter tting in sei an e 5 sleeve, the handle sleeve of the outer cutter; I EDWARD A S' spend said inner cutter being provided with Witmesses: interengeging stop shoulders on their upper PEARL ABRAMS,
eeiges to vmegist/er the cutting edge of the ESTHEQ}; ABRAMS.
