Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2,1912.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CARL ARTMANN, a
subject of the German Emperor, and resi- Blocks, Slabs, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of asphalt blocks and slabs and is .an im rovement upon the method described and c aimed in an earlier application, filed December. 17, 1910, Serial No. 597,868. As
explained in the prior application referred to such blocks or slabs are produced by ourtocool to a plastic condition and then dividing the, mass into blocks by successively introducing therein a series of dies each adapted to form substantially one half of the periphery of a com lete block. The application referred to rther describes that in order to prevent theplastic material from the prior application referred to has shown that the step of the method therein described which comprises coating the dies with lime or clay is objectionable because of the time and labor required to properly apply such coatings and further because portlons of the coating will adhere to the molded blocks giving-the latter an unattractive appearance.
The present invention provides a method by which such a plastic mass as has been hereinbefore referred to may be divided into blocks or slabs without causing any of .the material to adhere to the dies and without Application filed December 23, 1911. Serial No. 667,448.
marring the appearance of the blocks. That is; it has been discovered that if the walls of the receptacle in which the molten asphalt is allowed to cool, and the dies or cutting devices employed for separating such mass into blocks, be coated with a solution of a hygroscopic substance, the material will not adhere to the metal surfaces and the appearancc'of the finished blocks will not be impaired. A solution of chlorid of calcium has been found to give very satisfactory results and the dies may be readily coated by being dipped in such a solution. It is found that it is unnecessary to redi-p such dies after every use thereof, but a single dipping will sutlice for a number of operations.
Havin thus described the invention what is claime and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is: v
, 1. The herein described method of manufacturing asphalt blocks comprisingpouring molten asphalt into a suitable receptacle, allowing the material to cool to a plastic condition, anddividin such mass mto blocks by dies which have een coated with a solution of a hygroscopic substance.
2. The herein' described method of manu facturing asphalt blocks comprising pouring molten asphalt into a suitable receptacle, allowing the material 'to cool to a plastic condition, and dividing such mass into blocks by'dies which have been coated with a solution of chlorid of calcium.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. CAB-L ARTMANN.
