This invention relates to new and useful improvements in flying machines and my object is to provide an aeroplane comprising a pair of stationary supporting planes and a plurality of movable planes carried therebetween.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists'in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims. c

mounted in bearings 6 of certain of the vertical. spacing bars 3 are a pair of shafts 7 the ends of which project slightly beyond the front and rear ends of the planes 1 and 2 and have mounted thereon the front and rear propellers 8. These shafts 7 are adapted `to be 4rotated by any suitable means, (not shown) from an engine 9 and it will be appreciated from this construction that the device may be readily propelled by the rota tion of the propellers In order to provide for the ascension and Adescension of the device, I provide a pair of ascending and descending planes 10 and l1, the same being disposed respectively at the forward and rear ends of the machinerand extending transversely thereof. The forward movable plane 10 is pivotally engaged at its front edge with the eyes 12 formed in the collars 13, which collars are engaged with the vertical spacing bars 3 upon which the forwardbearings 6 are mounted. The rear movable plane 11 being'substantially the same width as the plane 10, extends vloeplanes 10 and 11 operatesimultaneously in order to effect the ascension and descension of the machine and to this end, connecting cables or other flexible connections 16 and 1'2" are 'extended longitudinally along the sides of the machine and crossed, the'ends of said pvotally or otherwise oscillatingly mounted on the frame of the plane 2-and has connected thereto one end of a connecting rod 2l, the opposite end of said connectingrod being pivotally engaged with a depending projection 22 on the front edge of the plane l0 about mid-way thereof. This st ering column or lever 20 is disposed immed ately adjacent a seat 23 on the frame of the plane 2, whereby the same maybe readily operated by the driver of the machine. I have also provided for the guiding or lateral movement of the machine and to this end, an additional plane 24 is provided, the same being movably mounted on the plane ll on an axis at right angles to the axis of said latter plan'e. This plane 24 is substantially circular in design, and formed in sections, one of which is disposed above the plane ll, while the other is disposed below the same and the sections of this plane are held together and are movable on an axis at right angles to the axis of the plane l1 by providing a stem or shank 25 on the lower section of t-he plane 24 which projects through a bearing or the like 26 in the central portion of the plane 1l, said shank being then extended through a bearing or sleeve portion 27 1n the frame of the'upper section of said plane, and held thereto by means of a nut 28. That portion of the shank 25 which extends through the bearing 26 in the plane 1l 1s circular in cross section, while that portion of the same extending through the bearing vor sleeve portion 27 is square as particularly shown in Fig. 2, whereby it will be understood that while this circular plane 24C will move with the plane l1, the same will also oscillate independently of said plane ll on an axis at right angles to the axis of the latter. In order to operate this plane 24, a pair of cables 2t) and 30 are provided, the inner end of each of which is engaged with said plane 24, while the opposite-ends thereof, after being passed over pulleys 8l on the plane ll, and additional pulleys 32 on the plane 2, at opposite sides of the column 2 0, are engaged with said lever or column 20. This steering column or rod 20, while being capable of an oscillating movement as dcscribed above, is also suitably mounted to permit rotatioirof the same through the .movable planes. .observed that the last mentionedplane carmedium of a hand wheel at the upper end thereof and thus it will be understood that the driver while operating the ascending and descending planes 10 and 11 through the oscillation of said lever, or column, 20, may also guide the machine through this same column by the mere rotation of thc same.
-From the foregoing description of the construction of my machine, the operation of the same will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a flying machine whereby the operating parts are centered on a single operating lever or steering column, thus eliminating all complications. It will further be seen that I have provided a pair of movable planes for the ascension and descension of the same and have further provided movable planesin connect-ion with one of the last referred to Furthermore, it `will be ried on the one movable plane is movable with respect to the plane carrying the same on an axis at right angles to the axis of the latter and is further substantially circular and formed in sections. It will still further be seen that the device is one which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
While I have particularly described the elements most well adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is l. In a [tying machine, a pair of supporting planes spaced one above the other, front and rear movable planes pivoted on horizontal axes between said supporting planes, 'a substantially circular plane formed in sections and mounted centrally of the rear 4movable plane and pivoted thereto, on an axis at right angles to the axis of the latter, means for the manual operation of said movable planes, and means for the propulsion of the device.
