Description
, IP. RILEY. YSTEAM GEBTBRATOM No. 103,081. Patented May 17, 18.70.
waited gitanas `PETER RILEY, or' LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
Leters Patent No. 103,081-, dated May 17, 1870.
IMPR'VEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS;
The Shedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of die same I, PETER RILEY, of Lancaster, in. vthe county of Lancaster and Stante of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is n specification.
Natureand Olyects -of the Iiwjcntz'on.`
Myinrention relntcsto the: manner of combining two water-spaces by horizont-nl dues or tubes, when such tubes are provided with adjustable vertical dinplirugms, so placed os to expose the greatest `amount ot surface to :m increased or undulztted action 'of the ire, und thcrebysnve fuel.
Description of lwAccmnpunying Drau-'ings'.
Figui-c 1 is n perspective View of the generator, to whiclrmy improvement is applied, surrounded by brickwork, with the covertoJhc front witter-space removed. i i Figure. 2 is :t side elevation.
Figure 3, n front elevation of the same.4
General Description.
A'is the wuter-spce over the fire-grate E.
-B is the other water water-space, over the flue K, in the reni'.l
D DStc., the tubes that open into the water-spaces A and B.
G is :t bridge woll, extending. to the rst range of tube D, `n nd continued byV n. metallic plate to the third tier .of tlnes.
I and H nre'udiustable dinphrugms, fitting closely A around thc tubes D', but not attached, so that they can be slidv onclc or forward, to ndj ust them. I descends centrally from the top downward, und H ascends from below the flue K to the third tier of tubes, ns shown.
"Jhe nme or heat is thus carried from the underside.
of the water-space A over the extended bridgewll G, under I, overfH, and down und beneath the weten space B to the ue K or stzick.4
F is the :ish-pit. v
Gis the sten|n-drnm.
L, a. steam-pipe lending from the water-sluwe B to the stenm-drinn .Y
M is the door-plate. N, u headed serewbolt and nut, for securing it, being made steam :md watertight. This opens directly'to the straight and horizontal tubes. The rear waterspace, B, may be closed in like manner, thus :tibrding easy access vfor cleaning the. tubes eectnully. 'lhe top of theivuter-spuce A opens directly into thestemu-drnm C. The pipe L Curries off thestemn that may arise in thewa-ter-sl'mce B. Thus, both the Water und steam has :t free circulation, and the fire n prolonged action, by the inter-V position of :the adjustable diaphragm, in the ma'nner shown, extending ncross from one wall to the other.
a is an iron plate inside, across the water-space A, perforated for the bolts in the door-plateM.
Iam :twnre that two witter-spaces connected by tubes' in un inclined or vertical positionare used; also, that dinpiuwgms, extending `in-uv longitudinal direc# tion through tnbes,'constrncted 'with flanges at the ends; such I do not claim; nor do I broadly cluim t-lfe two waiter-spaces combined by tubes; but Whnt I do claim us my invention, and desire to se- 'cure by Letters Patent,l is- 'The perforated diaphmgms H I of a horizontal tubular boiler, when mnde adjustable, as and'for the purpose named.
A PETER RILEY.
