Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. RAHE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in-the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Match-Making Machine, of which the; following is-a full, clear, and exact description. v
The 'invention'relates to match-making machines having an endless chain of carrier plates for receiving the splints and carry ing the same from device to device for automatically completing the matches and finally ejecting the same.

The splint delivery or filling device E is located on the right-handside of the machine for filling the splints into the outgoing portion of the endless chain of carrier plates, and the match- .ejecting device F 'is arranged on the lefthand side of the machine to eject the finished matches from the plates on the return portion of the endless chain of carrier plates. The mutilated gear wheels C are in meshwithcorresponding pinions G, secured on a shaft H journaled in suitable bearings on the'main frame A, and on the ends of the shaft H are secured pin wheels I and J, adaptedito be engaged by camsK and K secured on cam shafts K K, of which the shaft K is provided with a pulley K connected bya belt with other machinery for imparting a rotary motion to the cam shaft 1. On the cam shaft K is secured a bevel gear wheel K in mesh with a bevel gear wheel K secured on I a shaft K journaled on the main frame A. On the shaft K1is secured a bevel gear wheel K in mesh with a bevel gear wheei K secured on the cam shaft- K so that when the cam shaft K is rotated, a like rotary motion is given to the cam shaft K by the gearing just described. Now when the machine is running, the cam K acts successively on the pins 1 of-a set, to turn the mutilated gear wheel C while in mesh with the' corresponding toothed rack I), and when the mutilated gear wheel reaches a hinge joint D then the other quick-pitch cam K acts on a corresponding pin J to turn themutilated gear wheel C while passing the hinge joint D In practice, the cam K turns the wheel -C at double the speed of the cam K, and
hence the motion given to the endless chain of the carrier plates D is uniform. It is understood-that on one revolution of the shaft K the slow-pitch cam K causes a turning of the gear wheel 0 a distance corresponding to the distance between two teeth of the gear wheel C, and when the cam K has passed the last pin of aflset of pins I then this cam K does not act further on the pin wheel during the next revolution of the shaft K but the quick-pitch cam K duringthis revolution acts on the corresponding pin J of the pin wheel J to advance the'gear wheel C the distance between adjacent toothed portions of the wheel C, and which distance corresponds to the distance of two teeth of the wheel C. Thus a. uniform step by step movement interrupted at intervals by acceleratedmovement is given to the endless chain of carrier plates D at each revolution of the shaft K.

By having the bomb 0 directly above the outer ends of the splints at'the time of forcing the inner ends into the perforations D the splints. are not liable to leave the grooves-in the slide E in case the splints are slightly eccentric and not in absolutelyaccurate alin'ement relative to the perforations D The ejecting device F is constructed as follows, special reference'being had to Figs. 9 afid 10: Punches F are arranged in rows corresponding to the perforations D inthe carrier plates D, and the said'punches are clamped between bars F F F, of which the bar F forms an integral part of a punch holder frame F while the bars F and F are loose in the said frame and are engaged by screws F screwing in the top and bottom of the frame F against the bars F, F*, to securely clamp the punches F against the middle bar F Theback of the frame F is provided with apertures F to permit of conveniently removing and replacing the punches F ,in case such punches are Worn out or broken,- it being understood that for removing a punch and replacing thesame by a new one, it is only necessary to loosen the corresponding screws F and force the worn out punch rearwardly through the opening F and re-insert a new punch through the, said opening, after which the grooves F are again screwe up to clamp the punches in place. The operation is as follows: When the,
machine is running, a step by step move ment, interrupted at intervals by accelerated movement, is given to'the endless chain of carrier plates D, in such a manner that the the splint-filling device E,'while'the incoming portion travels downward at the ejecting device F. The splint-filling device E pushes tworows of splints into correspond. ing rows of apertures-D" of the carrier plate D at rest at the time, and at the same time the punches F" eject vtwo rows of matches from the corresponding plate D at the ejecting side of the machine. During the inward outgoing portio'n'thereof travels upward at movement of the slide E of the filling de- E now recedes or moves outward then' the comb descendsand its teeth pass into the grooves of the slide E to clean the same of extraneous matter during the further return movement of the slide E, and prior to the slide E reachingthe end of its outward stroke the comb O-nioves upward to its position of rest, and a new batch of splints now fills the grooves. of the'slide E from the lower shaking section N of the hopper N.
During thereturn movement of the slide movement is given to the endless chainzof, carrier plates D, which again come to rest at the next forward movement of the slide E when the ahove'described operation is repeated on the filling side of the machine.

It is understood that the filling device E and the ejecting device F are actuated in V .unison, one for filling the carrier plates with splints and the other for ejecting the matches from the returning carrier plates.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent: i
1. In a match-making machine having an endless chain of carrier plates and a slotted frame, a reciprocating delivery slide provided with grooves for the splints, and a reciprocating cleaning comb having its teeth extending over the rear ends of the splints at the time the forward ends of the splints 2. In a match-makingmachine having an endless chain of carrier plates, a reciprocatmg ejecting device havmg punches, punch holder frame, a series of clamping bars held one above the other and bearing against opposite sides of a port-ion of the said holder -f1'an1e,,and between which bars and said frame portion the punches are clamped, and
