Description
` To all whom z't-may concern p ment in, Fl`uting-Machines;
rollers, and i ELI MANVILLE, WATERBURY, CONNEC'IICUT.`
Letters Patent N o. 103,063, dated Mey 17 1 870.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettere 'Patentand making part of th'e same.
Be it known that I, Enr J. MANvrnLE, of Wat-erbury, in the, county ot New Haven, in the State ot' Connecticut, have inventeda newand useful Improven and the following is declared to be a full, cle-ar, and correct description of the said invention. p
`'lheohjeet of this invention is to simplify the construction, lessen the`c'ost,a1`id render more durable In my machine the rollers'are made of brass, cast upon an iron pipe, to lessen the cost of construction,
stifen the rollers, and enlarge the space for the/heater.Y
The rollersare separated by a pendentliuk, acting when `the-revolution of the main roller is reversed.f The rollers are supported, at one end by swinging ljointed bearings, and the frame that carries the lower- 'roller has asliding cylinder passing into the base, and Y, Alsfguided, at one end, in a stationary frame.
` In the drawing- .4 yliigure f1 is a vertical-section, longitudinally, of the Figure 2 is an end View of the rollers and frame.
\ `'.lhe stand of the machiue-is made with the legs t .inland cylinder b, and from -this lat-ter the frame 'c rises, the. salue'being made of a lowerhorizontalarm, with a ring around the cylinder b, a verticalportion'- that is made with two at ci, and`forming also thebearing for one end of the upper roller d. i
The top portion, c2, of the frame carries, at outer end, the bearing e, that is jointed at 2,-so that it cau be swung to causethe'` projecting stud to enter the;4
Vhollow roller d, or toY be drawn out of the same, and' when the j oiut-sere`w, 2, is turned, it clamps thebearingcrmlypto place.` s 'y '.lhe lower 'roller,j,ismounted in the sliding frame g. At one end this vframe g passes in between the parts cl of the'frame, andat .the other end.is the swnging bearing ef, similari-to the one Iapplied to the rol er d.
`The cylinder h that is formed upon the under side o f the frame g slides in the cylinder b, and a spring,
parts at the lower portion, as"
i, within the said cylinder b, acts to press theroller f up against the roller d. I s 4These rollers, f and d, are made of brass, cast upon au iron pipe, and then fluted,. This mode of eonstruction cheapens the rollers and makes' them much better, because the iron pipe forms the journals, and also the hole into which the heater is to be introduced. The drilling or Vboring ofthe roller is avoided, and the hole can be large in 4proportion to the` journals, the iron tube being lcssliable to bend than -the tubula-r brassjouruals heretofore employed.
The journal of the roller f projects and receives. the hub ofthe crank It', and a swinging cap, l, is provided to cover the hole in the rollerj, into which the heater is inserted.
Aswineinffea lmY is Ji'ovided for theo eniu r into the roller (l, and said cap is extended downwith a notched arm, 5, that acts as apawl, taking'against teeth or projections at the' bacltof the hubpt` the' crank 7l', as seen at 6.
The length-.of this arln 5 is such that, when the roller f is turned in the ordinary way the arm is not operative; but when the movement is reversed, the notch of the arm 5 takes one of the projections 6, and a continuation of ,the movement causes the'lower roller land its frame .to be depressed by the toggle movement of the arm 5, and projection, ou the hub ot the crank, opening the rollers for the introduction or removal of the article between them.
, I claim as my invention-7;- a
1. 'lhe roller for uting-machiues, herein described,
constructed with aniron pipe, which serves'4 as are- -eept-aele for the heater and journals for/the roller, and
having a corrugated brass sleeve cast-upon'and around it, as and for the purpose specified.
v.. A swinging arm, infcombiuation with the moving roller and frame, substantially as set forth, so that a reverse movement 'of the roller shall cause the separation of the rollers, as specified.
Signed by me this 3d day of October, 1869.
