Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Trimming-Machines, of which the following descri' tion, in connection with the accompanying rawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several fig ures.
This invention relates to trimming machines.
I In particular it relates to a machine for trimming the edge of a. boot. or shoe solo in the region of the heel breast. A machine of this type is shown in my application Scrial No. 395,194 filed September 30, 1907, also assigned to the assignee of the present invention, and the present application is a continuation of the former, so far as the subject matter common to the two cases is concerned.
A eneral object of this invention is to provide a machine for performing quickly and effectively a trimming operation which has heretofore been performed by hand. In the usual methods of manufacturing shoes the sole edge is trimmed after the heel has been attached to the outsolc and has been trimmed and breasted. The forepartof the sole and a part of the shank are then trimmcdby an ordinary edge trimming ma chine, such machine having usually rotary cutters or knives, and the welt or upper edge of the sole is usually beveled or randed atthe same time. It is impossible, however, to trim the edge of the shank portion of the sole adacent to the heel breast on the ordinary e ge trimming machine owing to the fact that. the heel interferes with the action of the trimming knives; and this'part of the Sole edge has hitherto been trimmed by hand. In the hand trimming operation the workman usually cuts along the edge of the sole with a suitable knife until the heel breast is reached and he then makes a transverse cut in line with the heel breast to remove the material trimniedfrom the sole edge.
A particular aim of the present invention therefore, isto provide an improved edge trimming machine which will be particularly adapted for trimming the sole edge in the region of the heel breast.
To this end one feature of the invention consists in the provision of a trimming knife or cutter arranged to trim the edge of the shank of a shoe sole adjacent to the heel breast, preferably in combination with means for positioning the shoe for the operation of said knife or cutter. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the knife is given a rapid to and fro movement to cause it to cut to the line of the heel breast. this construction, also, the knife is provided with right and left cutting edges arranged respectively to trim the rightand left edges of a shoe sole, and the positioning means not only locates the shoe properly with reference to the knife, but also protects the other parts of the shoe from injury.
Another feature of the invention consists in the provision with means" for trimming the edge of a shoe sole adjacent to the heel breast of means for detaching thetrimined material from the sole. In the machine shown herewith the latter means comprises a second knife arranged to cutinto the edge of the sole in a direction transverse to the line of cut of the trimming knife, above described, and said second knife preferably cuts to the line of cut of the trimmingknifc and at the end of the cut made thereby. The means foractuating the knives is arranged to move them alternately to the line of intersection of their paths. In the illustrated embodiment two transversely cutting knives, hereinafter'termcd chopping knives, are employed and are arranged to cooperate resiectively with the right and left edges of t e trimming knife.
The invention also provides novel knives for the purpose justdescribed which may be shar ened conveniently and with the ready a justment of which sharpening will not interfere. It will be apparent that if the cutting edges of two knives which move transversely to each other are to travel to the same line, the edge of one knife, if this line is curved or inclined, must be curved or inclined transversely to its path of move ment, while the edge of the other knife must be curved or inclined in its path of movement. For convenience in adjusting the knives so that the actuating means Will move them in such a manner that their cutting edges will travel to the same line, the knives are preferably so constructed that sharpening will affect the relative position of the edge of each knife to its holder along one dimension only of the knife. For the sake of simplicity in construction the edge trimming knife is provided in its preferred form with right and left cuttin edges facing in substantially opposite directions and said edges are so shaped as to give to the sole edge the desired transverse contour. To facilitate sharpening of the chopping knives each knife is arc-shaped along its greatest dimension and in cross section is of such form that grinding along a tangent to its inner curve will produce a cutting edge of the desired outline.
A further feature of the invention consists in a construction whereby the chopping and trimming knives may be adjusted relatively to each other. It is evident that as the trimming knife is shortened by re peated sharpening its path of travel will be shortened also and its cutting edges therefore will not move to the respective lines of cut of the chopping knives. Nith a view to compensating for such wear of the trimming knife and the accompanying shortening of its operative stroke and also for the purpose of facilitating accurate initial adjustment of the knives the chopping knives are preferably so mounted that the points of intersection of their paths'with the path of the trimming knife may be varied along the path of the latter. Furthermore the chopping knives themselves are secured ad justably in holders so that they may he adjusted transversely of the path of the trimming knife. The knives therefore may be adjusted in such a manner that the cooperating cutting edges will always move to the same line.

Referring to the drawings, 2 designates a supporting frame provided near its upper end with bearings 44 receiving a rotatable shaft 6. The shaft may be driven by means of a belt running over the pulley 8 secured rigidly to the shaft between the bearings 4.l. An angle plate 10 and an arm 12, mounted on a horizontal portion of said plate, are both secured to the forward end of the frame 2 by a bolt 14. A spindle 16 projects rigidly from the vertical depending portion of the angle plate 10 and extends in a direction substantially parallel to the shaft 6 and stationary arm 12. Mounted-on the spindle 16 is a rocker frame 18, provided at its rearward end with two depending arms having a slideway formed between them to receive a block 22 mounted on a stud 24 projecting eccentrically from the end of the shaft 6. As the shaft rotates the eccentric stud gyrates the block 22 in the slideway and thus oscillates the rocker frame 18 about the spindle 16. For the purpose of strengthening this portion of the frame a bolt 26 is threaded througlrthe lower ends of the arms and a sleeve 28 is positioned on the bolt between the arms to hold them properly spaced. Lubricating material is supplied to the friction surfaces of the rocker frame and spindle from an oil cup 30,\vhich communicates with a duct 20 fori'ned axiallyin the spindle 16, the oil flowing out on to the surface of the spindle through ducts 23 spaced along the upper side of the spindle and then backalong the lower side of the spindle to small openings 23 formed in the rocker frame 18 through which the oil drips on to the block 22. and it is desirable, of course, to have the entire shank trimmed to a uniform contour. Right and left cutting edges are formed on opposite ends of the knife 36 each edge being continuous with the outer surface of the knife. Each of the cutting edges consists of a portion designed to trun along the E sole edge and another portion indicated at 37, Fig. '5, designed to hovel or rand the upper edge of the Welt. As the. surface of the heel hreast is usually curved so that it. obliquel' intersects the surface of the trimmed sole edge. as indicated in Fig. l.

It will be underslooih however, that the shape of the knife edges will he varied to suit different styles and haracters of Work. By forming the cutting edge of the trimming knife in line with its .outer urface, as described, the knife may he sharpened by merely grinding hack to the outer surface. of oscillation of the rocker frame 18 and that this spacing is equal to the length of the links 45 and 46 between their pivot centers. Each of the levers 43 and 44 therefore forms 'one side of ditferent arallelograms of motion and as the rocker fame 18 oscillates the operative surface of each of the knives 51 and 52 reeiprocates in parallelism wit itself. Simultaneously the trimming knife 36 oscillates about the center of oscillation of the frame 18; the reciprocating movements -of the trimming knife alternatin g with those of the chopping knives. Consequently as either edge of the trimming knife cuts along the sole edge the cooperating chopping knife will cut into the sole edge transversely to the cut of the trimming knife.
In order to leave a smoothly trimmed surface and to sever the trimmed material cleanly from the sole, it is necessary to'have the chopping knife cut exactly to the line'of cut; of the trimming knife. To this end the edges of the knives 51 and 52 are curved in their paths of movement to conform to the cutting edges of the. trimming knife. Each of the chopping knives is arc-shaped in its greatest dimension and for convenience in obtaining the desired outline of the cutting edge it is shaped in cross section so that the outer edqe of its cross sectional outline is like. the. forcshortened outline of its desired cutting edge. In other words, the cross sectionaloutline through the peripheral surface of the knife agrees with the projection on a rlidial plane of the desired cutting edge. By grinding the knife. shaped as shown in along a tangent to its inner curve (the curve forming the P shoulders indicated at and f. Fig. 8) a cut ting edge of the shape there shown will he obtained, and so long as the grinding is done upon a tangent to this inner curve the edge will always have the same outline. The arc shaped form of the trimming and ch pping knives not only produces advantages in sharpening as aliove described but. also has advantages in manufacturing, since the knives may he made by turning a ring of the desired cross sectional form and then cutting the ring into sections of suitable length for the knives. The ribs may then he cut off to the desired dimensions and the cutting edges formed by grinding as above described.
As the knife 36 shortened by repeated sharpening its path of travel will be shortfed past the knives until the chopping knife engages the heel breast and prevents further feeding movement. In this position of the shoe the knife 51 chops into the sole edge in line with the heel breast and to the line corresponding to that indicated on the right edge of the sole at cl, Fig. 4. The knife is prevented from chopping beyond this line, since its length of stroke is not sufficient to carry it above the edge of the heel breast. Since the knives are adjusted to cut to the same line, it follows that the trimming knife also will cut to the line corresponding to (I, and will be prevented from cutting beyond this line. The trimming of the edge is now complete and the shoe should he presented next to the machine in the position indicated at A Fig. 1 to have the right edge trimmed, this operation being precisely the same as that just described.
It is preferred to use a trimming knife f the double edged form, as shown, because of its simplicity; and it is also preferred to po sition said knife with its greatest dimension extending substantially horizontal, in the manner shown, since in this position it is more convenient for the Workman to present the shoe properly to the operation of the knives and to watch the trimming operation.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a machine of the class described the combination with means for trimming the edge of a shoe sole to' the line of the heel breast, of additional means operating at the same presentation of the shoe to the machine to detach the trimmed matenial from the ened also aid it is therefore necessary to provide some m ans for compensating for such shortening to the end that the cooperating pairs of right and left cutting edges shall always travel to the same line. 13. In an edge trimming machine the combination with an edge trimming knife having portions adapted to operate upon the upper side of the sole, of means to actuate said knife to effect a trimming operation along the sole edge to the breast of the heel,
a second knife having an edge the contour of which corresponds to the transverse contour of the trimmed sole edge, and means for moving said second knife transversely to the path of movement of the edge trimmin knife to sever the trimmed material adjacent the heel breast.
14. In an edge trimming machine the combination with a rocking frame and means for rocking said frame, of an edge trimming knife rigidly attached to said frame, a second knife pivotally mounted upon said frame and connections between said second knife and a stationary part arranged to cause said knife to move transversely to the ath of movement of the edge trimming kni e.
15. An edge trimming machine comprising, in combination, a cutter having a plur. ity of cutting edges arranged to trim the edges of shoe solesand means for detaching the material trimmed from the sole said edges.
16. An edge trimming machine comprising, in com ination, a cutter having tWo cutting edges, means for imparting to and fro movements to said cutter and additional .cutters cooperating with said cutting edges at the ends of their operative movements.
17. An edge trimming machine comprising, in combination, a knife having two cutting edges arranged to have different cutting movements and a pair of knives each arranged for movement in a path transverse to the ath of the first knife.
18. l n edge trimming machine comprising, in combination, a knife having two cutting edges facing in substantially op osite directions and arranged for to and fro movements, a pair of knives each arranged for movement in a path transverse to the path of the first knife and common means for actuating'said knives.
19. An edge trimming machine comprising, in combination, a douhleedged trimming knife arranged to out along the edge of a shoe sole and two independent knives arranged respectively to cuttransversely into the ed e of the sole at the ends of the cuts made v the edges of said trimming knife.
20. An. edge trimmin ing, in combination, a nife having rifight and left cutting edges arranged for di erent cutting movements, said knife being constructed and arranged to trim the edge of a .sole shank to the line of the heel breast, and
cause its edges to move alternate y to their respective lines of intersection with the paths of the chopping knives.
22. An edge trimming machine comprising, in combination, a double-edged trimming knife arranged to out along the edge of a shoe sole, the edges of said knife being shaped to give to the sole edge a predeter mined transversecontour, two chopping knives arranged respectively to cut transversely into the edge of the sole at the ends of the cuts made by the edges of said trimming knives, means for actuating said knives, each of said chopping knives being so shaped that at the end of its operative movement it contacts with the trimmed surface of the sole edge along the entire line of intersection of the path (if said chopping knife With the path of the edge trimming knife.
23. In an edge trimming machine, the combination of a cutter constructed and arranged to trim the edge of a shoe sole shank in front of and up to the heel breast, means for protecting the heel from the action of said cutter but permitting said cutter to trim substantially to the heel breast, and means for positioning the shoe for the operation of said cutter.
24. In an edge trimming machine the combination with an edge trimming knife arranged to move in a predetermined path of predetermined extent, of means for positioning a shoe with respect to said knife so that said knife will more in its trimming operation only to the heel breast of said shoe.
25. In an edge trimming machine the combination with an edge trimming cutter arranged to trim the shank portion of a sole edge to the line of the heel breast. of means for preventing said cutter from trimming beyond said line.
26. In an edge trimming machine the combination with an edge trimming cutter adapted to trim the shank portion of a sole edge to the line of the heel breast, of means for limiting the extent of cut of said cutter machine comprisalong the sole edge and means for limiting the depth of out of said cutter.
27. In an edge trimming machine the combination with an edge trimming cutter adapted to trim the shank portion of a sole edge to the line of the heel breast, of a gage arranged to enter the crease between the shoe upper and the sole and a second gage arranged to engage the heel of the shoe being trimmed.
28. In an edge trimming machine the combination with an edge trimming knife arranged to cut along the edge of a shoe sole, of a knife arranged to cut transversely into the edge of the sole at the end of the cut made by the edge trimming knife, and means to position the Work for the operation of said knives.
29. In a machine for cutting in shoe shanks, a knife adapted to be moved along the edge of the shank of a shoe toward and away from the heel, a second knife movable transversely of the path of said first knife, and. a rest against which said shoe may be placed.
80. In a trimming machine the combination with means for trimming the edge of a shoe sole, of means for detaching the trimmed material from the sole and means for limiting the extent of operation of the trimming means along the sole edge.
31. In a trimming machinethe combination with means for trimming the edge of a shoe sole. of a single means for detaching the trimmed material from the sole and for limiting the extent of cut of the trimming means along the sole edge.
32. In a trimming machine the combination with means for trimming the edge of a shoe sole. of a single means for detaching the trimmed material from the sole in a line with the heel breast and for preventing said trimming means from trimming beyond the line of said heel breast.
In a trimming machine the combination of a cutter arranged to trim the edge of the shank portion of the shoe sole, 2. second cutter movable transversely to the path of the fir t cutter. said second cutter being arranged to engage the heel breast of the shoe and thereby limit the extent of cut of the first cotter along the sole edge.

In a trimming machine the combina tion with means for trimming the edge of a shoe sole, of a single means for detaching the trimmed material from the sole and for limiting the extent of cut of the trimming means along the sole edge and means for positioning the shoe for'the operation of said'trimming and detaching means.

In an edge trimming machine the combination with an edge trlmming'knife arranged to cut alon the edge of a shoe sole and having a portion adapted to rand the sole simultaneouslywith the edge trimming operation, of a knife arranged to cut transversely into the edge of the sole at the end of the out made by the edge trimming knife, and means to guard the upper against the action of said knives.

An edge trimming machine having, in combination, an edge trimming cutter arranged to trim the edge of a shoe sole to the breast of the heel, a cutter arranged to cut into the edge of the sole in line with. the breast of the heel and me ms to position the shoe properly with relation to said cutters.
38. A sole ed e trimming machine comprising, in com ination, a pair of spaced choppin knives arranged to reciprocate in substantially. parallel paths, a trimming knife having two cnttin edges arranged one adjacent each of sai chopping knives, means for moving said trimmmg knife transversely to said paths, and a guard arranged to protect the shoe upper from the action of said knives.
39. An edge trimming machine comprising, in combination, a double-edged trimming knife adapted to trim the edge of a shoe sole, two knives arranged res ectively to cut transversely. into the edge 0 the sole at the ends of the cuts made by theedges of said trimming knife, and means for positioning the shoe for ,the operation of said knives.
40. A machine for trimming the sole edge of a shoe shank, comprisin in combination, a trimming knife having right and left cut-- ting edges, cooperating right and left chopping knives arranged respectivel to move in paths transverse to the paths of said right and left edges, means for imparting reciprocating movements to all of said knives, each of the chopping knives being arranged to engage a heel breast and thereby limit the extent of cut of said trimming knife along a sole edge.
41. A machine for trimming the shank portion of a sole edge comprising a trimming knife having right and left cutting edges arranged for cutting movements in difi'erent directions, right and left choppin knives cooperating respectively with said edges and arranged. to cut transversely into the sole edge at the ends of theocuts made by said trimming edges, each of said cho ping knives being arranged to engage e heel and thereby prevent said knives from cutting beyond the line of the heel breast and a guard for protecting the upper from the operation 0t said knives.
42. An edge trimming machine comprising, in combination, an edge trimming cutter and a cutter movable in a path transverse to that of the edge trimming cutter, said cutters being relatively adjustable so that the position of the line of intersection of their paths may be varied.
43. An edge trimming machine compris ing, in combination, an edge trimming knife and a knife movable in a path transverse to that of the edge trimming knife, one of said knives being adjustable to vary the point of intersection of the paths of said knives along the path of travel of the other knife.
44. An edge trimming machine comprising, in combination, an edge trimming knife, a second knife movable in a path transverse to the path of the edge trimming knife andmeans whereby the second knife may be adjustedto vary its point of intersection with the path of the edge trimming knife along the path of said trimming knife.
45. An edge trimming machine comprising, in combination, an edge trimming knife arranged for to and fro movement, a second knife movable in a path transverse to that of the trimming knife, said second knife being arran ed for adjustment both longitudinally an transversely of the path of the trimming knife.
46. An edge trimming machine comprising, in combination, an edge trimming out ter arranged for to and from movement, a second cutter 'movable in a path transverse to that of the trimming cutter and a holder for each of said cutters in which the cutters are adjustably secured.
47. An edge trimming machine comprising, in combmatiom'an edge trimming knife arranged to cut aiong the edge of a shoe sole, a knife arranged to cut transversely into the edge of said sole, a holder for each of said knives and means whereby one of said holders may be adjusted to move in different paths all substantially. parailei to each other.

An edge trinnning machine comprising, in combination, a. rocking frame, means for rocking said frame, an edge trimming knife rigidly secured to said frame, a knife holder pivotaliy connected with said frame, a second knife carried by said holder, a connection between a stationary part of the machine and said holder arranged to cause said second knife to move transvcrseiy to the path of movement of the edge trimming knife, said connection including an adjustment whereby the path of movement of the second knife may be varied.
49. An edge trimming machine com rising. in combination, a trimmin knife aving two cutting edges arrange for different cutting movements, two chopping knives awanged one adjacent each of said cutting edges, each of said chopping knives being mow able in a path transverse to that of the trimming knife and means whereby the chopping knives may be adjusted toward or from the edges of the trimming knife.

An edge trimming machine comprising. in combination, a rocker frame having a depending arm and two lateral arms, a holder formed at thelo-wer end of said depending arm, a double-edged trimming knife rigidly secured in said holder, a lever connected to each of said lateral arms, a knife holder formed on the lower end of each lever adjacent the respective edges of said knife, a chopping knife secured in each of said holders, and a link connecting the other end of each lever with a stationary part of the machine whereby said chopping knives are caused to move in patht transverse to that of the trimming knife.

An edge trimming machine comprising. in combination a rocker frame having a depending arm and two lateral arms, means for imparting an oscillatory motion to said f am. a trimming knife adjustably secured at the lower end of said depending arm, said knife having two edges facing in substantially opposite directions, a pair of tively to said lateral arms, a chopping knife adjustably secur d in each of said holders, an adjustable link connection between each of said holders and a stationary part of the machine and a guard secured in front of said knives.

In an edge trimming machine a trimming cutter curved along its greatest dimension, said cutter having a cutting edge formed at each end. thereof, each of said edges being in a. line with the outer surface of said cutter, said surface being shaped to give the sole edge the desired transverse contour and a rib on the back of said cutter whereby it may be secured in a suitable holder.
In an edge trimming machine a knife, arc-shaped along its greatest dimension. having the outer part of its cross sectional outline like the foreshortened outline of its desired cutting edge, and ground to an edge along a tangent to its inner curve.
54. In a sole edgetrimmingmachine a cut ter having a surface conforming in transverse contour to that which it is desired to give to a sole edge, said cutter having right and left cutting edges formed thereon by grinding opposite ends of the cutter back to said surface and means for giving said cutter rapid to and fro movements in the direction of its length.

A machine for trimming that portion of the sole edge between the heel breast and the point in the shank at which the usual machine trimming ope *ation is stopped, comprising a cutter having an edge shaped to give to the sole edge a transverse contour like that of the previously trimmed portion of the sole edge and means for giving said cutter rapid to and fro movements in a fixed path.

An edge trimming machine compris ing a cutter arranged to complete the trimming of the shank porti n of a sole edge adjacent to the heel breast, said cutter having a cutting edge shaped to give to the sole edge a transverse contour conforming to that of the previously tiinanxed portion of the sole edge.

In a trimming machine, the combination of a cutter arranged to trim that portion of the sole edge betw en the heel breast and the point in the shank at. which the usual machine trimming operation is stopped. means for driving the cutter, and means for protecting the other parts of the .shoe during the trimming operation from injury by said cutter, but permitting the cutter to trim to the heel breast.

In a trimming machine, the combination of a cutter mounted for movement about an axis and constructed and shaped to trim that portion of the sole edge between the heel breast and the point in the shank at which the usual machine trimming operation is stopped, means for driving the cutter, and means coiiperalively arranged with reference to the cutter to protect the heel from contact therewith during the trimming operation while permitting the cutter to trim substantially to the heel breast.

In a trimming machine, the combination of trimming means arranged to trim the edge of a shoe sole in front of and to the line of the heel breast and means for preventing the trimming means from trimming beyond said line but constructed to permit such relative movement of the shoe and trimming means that the sole edge will be trimmed substantially to the line of the heel breast.

In a trimming machine, the combination of trimming means arranged to trim the edge of a shoe sole in front of and to the line of the heel breast, means for pro tecting the heel from the action of said trimming means constructed to permit said trimming means to trim substantially up to said line and additional means for protecting other parts of the shoe from the action of said trimming means.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of trimming means arranged to trim the edge of a shoe sole iii front of the heel breast, means for protccting the heel breast from the action of said trimming means constructed to permit said edge trimming means to trim the sole edge substantially to the line of the heel breast and means for protecting the upper of the shoe, adjacent to the sole edge acted upon, from the action of the trimmingmeans.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of trimming means arranged to-cut down the sole edge of a shoe in front of the heel breast to a point below the edge surface of the heel and substantially to the plane of the heel breast, means for protecting the heel from the action of the trimming means constructed to permit said trimming means to trim the sole edge substantially to the plane of the heel breast and means for protecting the upper of the shoe, adjacent to that portion of the sole edge acted upon, from the action of said trimming means.
69. A machine of the class described, having in combination, an edge trimming knife constructed and arranged to trim the edge of the shank of a shoe sole from the point where the rotary trimming began, or left off, to the breast of the heel and a second knife arranged to move transversely to the path of movement of the edge trimming knife at the end of the cutting stroke of said edge trimming knife.
70. A machine of the character set forth having, in combination, means for trimming the edge of the sole longitudinally thereof to the breast of the heel, means for cutting transversely of said sole to cut off the material thus trimmed in line with the breast of the heel, means for randing the upper edge of the sole, and a crease gage arranged to bear against the upper face of said sole, whereby said sole is positioned laterally thereof relatively to said trimming, cutting and randing instrumentalities.
71. A machine of the character set forth having, in combination, means for trimming the edge of the sole to the breast of the heel, means for cutting off the material thus trimmed in line with the breast of the heel, means for randing the upper edge of the sole, and av crease gage arranged to bear against the upper edge of the sole, whereby said sole is positioned laterally thereof relatively to said trimming and randing instrumentalities.
72. In a machine of the class described, the combination of means for cutting down the edge of a shoe sole in front of and to the line of the heel breast. and a gage so positioned with reference to said means that it protects the heel breast from contact therewith, said gage being shaped and arranged to permit said means to operate on the sole edge substantially to the line of the heel breast.
73. In a machine of the class described, the combination of means constructed and shaped to cut down the edge of a shoe sole in front of the heel breast to a point below the edge surface of the heel and substantially to the plane of the heel breast, a'gage so located with reference to said means t at it engages the heel breast and prevents t e heel from coming into contact with said means, said gage being shaped and arranged to permit said means to operate on the sole edge to substantially the line of the heel breast and a guard for protecting the upper of the shoe adjacent to the point of operation of said means from contact therewith.
