WI'IN ESSES INVENTOR TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1912.
Application filed April 16, 1912. Serial No. 691,102.
f0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. BnsnN- nnne, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at West Newton, in the countyof Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ties and Rail Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ties and rail fasteners, and the objects of my invention are to provide a metallic tie of the I-beam construction that can be easily and quickly tamped in the ballast of a roadbed, and to furnish the tie with novel rail fasteners for preventing vertical and lateral displace ment of rails mounted upon the tie.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a light and durable tie that can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost, and to accomplish the above results by a tie that possesses suflicient strength and rigidity to support the great weight of rolling stock that passes over the same.
With the above andother objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the tie in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the tie.
A tie in accordance with this invention comprises an I-beam having a web 1, base flanges 2 and top flanges 3. The tie is of the ordinary length and at the ends thereof the web 1 and the top flanges 3 are cut away, whereby the tie will have beveled ends 4; that permit of the ballast of a roadbed more firmly holding the ends of the tie. The tie, intermediate the ends thereof, is cut away, as at 5 and beveled, as at 6, the cut away ends and intermediate portions of the tie reducing the weight of the same and permitting of the ballast of the road bed more firmly holding the tie. The remaining portions of the top flanges 3 provide chairs for the base flanges 7 of rails 8,
and I have simply illustrated one end of.
the tie as the opposite end thereof is identical in construction. The top flanges 3,
at the base flanges 7 of the rail 8, are pro-. vided with transverse slots 9, one slot at each side of the web 1, and these slots are staggeredly arranged in order not to weaken the top flanges 3, also to permit of the base flanges of the rails being held at points other than those oppositely disposed, the reason of which is obvious.
Arranged within the slots 9 are rail fasteners, comprising hook-shaped members 10 that have the hooks 11 thereof engaging the base flanges 7 of the rail 8. The lower ends of the members 10 are provided with cross heads 12 that engage under the top flanges 3, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To retain the hook-shaped member 10 in the slots 9, the top flanges 3 are provided with vertical openings 13 and arranged in these openings are cotter pins or split keys 14 that have the lower ends thereof split, as at 15 whereby the pins cannot become accidentally displaced. The lower ends of the pins engage the outer side of the head 12 and prevent the members 10 from shifting with.- in the slots 9.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have obviated the necessity of using bolts and nuts in connection with rail fasteners for securing rails upon a metallic tie, and that the rail fasteners can be easily and quickly installed without the use of skilled labor.
I would have it understood that my invention is susceptible to such changes as are permissible by the appended claim.
hat I claim is In a metallic tie and rail fastener, the combination with a rail, of a tie of the L beam construction having a web, base flanges and top flanges, said web and said top flanges having the ends thereof beveled and cut away intermediate the ends, said top flanges supporting the base flanges of a rail and having transverse slots formed therein adjacent to the base flanges of said rail, and hook-shaped members retained within the slots of the top flanges of said tie and engaging the base flanges of said rail.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY F. BESENBERG.
