To all rwhom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. Mao- LEWEE, a Acitizen of the United States, residing at Yardley, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Switches, of which the following is' a speciiication.
My invention relates' to improvements in '1D an electric switch and particularly to a switch which` may be used in connection with electric light circuits.-
The object 'of my invention is to provide an electric switch which is simple in construction, which may be readily assembled and which may be operated by a single 'movement of a cord or rod and a further object of my invention is to provide a switch which may be used at any place in the elec- 2o tric circuit, or which may be provided with a lamp socket for attaching an incandescent 1am to the switch. l
y improved switch is intended for use inthe construction of electric light fixtures `in which one or more switches are inclosed wit-hin the casing of the fixture to control the electric circuit or circuits. l Referring to the drawing in which like refy erences refer to like parts: Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved switch; Fig. `2, is a front elevation of Fig. 1.. Fig. 3, vis a vertical section on line 3-3Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the housing, made of insulating material; Figs. 5, 6 and 7, are perspective views of the switch mechanism detached, and Fig. 8, is a vertical section as on 'line 8--8 Fig. 3, showing the housing provided with a lamp pocket.
Y In the drawing,1 representsthe housing made of porcelain or other insulating material. The housing is rectangular in shape and consists of the top v2, the bottom 3,l and the two sides 4 and 5. The other two sides of the housing are open, so that the switch mechanism located within.the housing may be accessible.
Y The switch mechanism consists of the bearing member 8, rigidly secured by a screw 9, or other suitable means, to the top portion 2 of the housing. The bearing member 8, more clearly shown in Fig.' 5, consists of the base plate 10, having slde arms 12 and 13, which form bearings for the rotatable shaft 15. Upon the base plate 10 35 is formed a lug 16 for attaching a c oil spring 17, Ind the arm 12 is provided with a projecting plate 18, to which is secured a plate spring 19, see Figs. 1 and 2. The base plate 10 is provided with a binding screw 14 formlng a point of contact for the electric circuit. The `shaft 15 is rotatably mounted in the bearlngs 12 and 13, and said shaft 15 carries the switch plate 20, a ratchet wheel 21, and an angular block 22, all of which are rigidly secured to said shaft 15, as shown in Fig. 6.
Rotatably secured upon the shaft 15' 'is 'an operating lever 25, shown detached in Fig. 7, which consists of the hub 26, from which pro-ject the arms 27 and 28, the former of which is for attaching a push rod 30, for operating the lever 25. The other arm 28 of the lever 25 is provided with a projecting plate 32, to which is attached a spring pawl 33, which engages the teeth 23 of the ratchet wheel 21. Said projecting plate 32 also forms a stop which takes against the arm 13 of the bearing member to limit the movement of the operating lever. The spring 17 is attached to a lug 35, formed upon the arm 28 of .the operating lever, and to the lug 16 upon the bearing member, and tends to hold the projecting plate 32 of the operating lever against the arm 13 of the bearing member.
-The arm 28 of the operating lever is also provided with a lug 36 to which may be attached a cord 37 for rotating the operating lever upon the shaft. Y
A spring contact plate 40 is secured to the lower portion 3 of the housing by a screw 4l, or other suitable fastening device. Said spring contact plate 40 is located in alinement with the switch plate 20 secured-pon the shaft 15 and contact is made by the end of the switch plate impinging against the spring contact plate 40. The screw 41 holding the contact plate 40, also secures a conductor plate 42 to the contact plate 40,
and said conductor plate 42 projects through an aperture 6 formed in the wall 4 of the housing. A binding screw 43 is carried by the conductor plate 42 and forms one contact point for the attachment of a wire of the electric circuit. The head of the contact screw 41 also forms another contact point and 'is used when the switch has a lamp socket 45 secured to the same, as shown in Fig. 8.
The housing is provided upon the lower surface of the bottom 3 with a circular flange 7 around which fits a metal sleeve or lamp socket 45 provided with a screw-thread to receive an incandescent lamp, which is adapted to contact with ythe screw 41 of the I switch and with the metal sleeve 45. A conductor plate 47 is secured tothe side 5 of the housing by screws 49 and 50, and is also provided with binding screws 51 and 52 for attaching wires to complete the circuit.
When the switch is not used in connection with the lamp socket 45, the flange 7 formed upon the lower face of the housing 1, forms a base, which is adapted to rest upon any flat surface to which the housing may be secured by screws, not shown in the drawing, for which a ertures 53 and 54.are formed through the bottom portion 3 of the housing.
When the housing is secured to a at surface, the binding screws 43 and 52 are used as the points of connection for the wire conductors.
The operation of my invention is as follows A wire or conductor is connected at the top of the housing with the binding screw 14 which makes Contact with the bearing member carrying the switch plate 20. By pushing therod or by pulling the cord 37, the operating lever is rotated upon 4the shaft 15, as a fulcrum, and the pawl 33 upon the operating lever engages a tooth of the ratchet wheel and rotates the latter a quarter revolution, which will move the switch plate 20 into or out ofcontact with the spring contact plate v by successive movements of the operating lever. The angular block 22, secured upon the shaft 1,5 and engaged by the spring 19, will hold. the
-shaft fromturning backward when the ycoil spring 17 returns the operating lever to its circuit will be broken by the switch plate being separated from the'contact plate 40.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a switch having a housing and switch mechanism, the comblnation of a bearing member for said switch mechanism consisting of a base plate and arms depending from said base plate, a shaft mounted in said arms, a lug formed upon said base plate for attaching a spring thereto, a projecting lug formed upon one of said arms and a plate spring secured to said lug to retard the movement of said shaft.
2. In a switch, the combination of a housing of insulated material formed of top and bottom portions and two rectangular side walls, a circular flange formed upon the bottom portion of said housing, a lamp socket secured to said flange, and switch mechanisln secured within said housing.
