certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lamp sockets and particularly to that class adapted to be used in connection with incandescent electric lamps.
The object of my invention is to provide a lamp socket which is simple in construction, which can be readily assembled and. manufactured at a low cost.
My invention consists of various novel features of construction and arrangement of the parts which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawing in which like references refer to like parts: F igure 1. a side elevation of my improved lamp socket; Fig. 2. is a central vertical section through the socket, shown in Fig. 1, and also showing a lamp inserted in the socket: Fig. 3. is a side elevation of the body portion of the socket, detached; Fig. i. is a plan view of Fig. 3; Fig. 5. is an inverted plan view of Fig. 3; Fig. 6. is a central vertical section of my improved socket showing a key-switch embodied therein; Fig. 7. is a section on line 77, Fig. 6; and Fig. 8. is a'view similar to Fig.6. of the body portion of the socket, detached, illustrating the same used in connection with the ordinary metal lamp sleeve.
The body portion 1 of the lamp socket is made of porcelain or other suitable insulating material. The lamp sleeve 2, is also made of insulating material, preferably of vulcanized rubber. The body portion 1, and the sleeve 2, are cylindrical in form and the body portion fits into the lower end 3 of the sleeve 2. A shoulder 5 is formed upon the body portion 1 to limit the distance that the body portion can-enter the sleeve. The lower end 3 of the sleeve is screw threaded upon its outer surface and receives the screw threaded portion of the metal cap 8, which incases the lower end of the body portion and securely holds the latter in the sleeve 2. The upper portion of the sleeve 2 is prothread to engage the screw thread upon the rlpetal shell 9 of the lamp 10, as shown in The body portion 1 carries the central contact plate 12 and the outer contact plate 14, more clearly shown in Fig. 4. The said contact plates are secured by screws 15 and 16 or other suitable fastening devices. The
center contact plate 12 makes contact with the central contact plate 18 of the lamp, and
the outer contact plate makes contact with the lower turned edge of the metal shell 9 of the lamp, when the latter is screwed into the sleeve 2 of the socket.
The outer contact plate 14, consists of the central, post 20 having bifurcated arms 21 and 22, which are formed concentric with the center of the socket, so that said arms will not contact with the central contact plate 18 of the lamp, or with the central contact plate 12 of the socket.
The contact plates 12 and 14 are provided with binding screws 24: and 25, for attaching the electric wires or conductors, which pass through apertures 26 and 27 formed through the body portion for that purpose.
The metal cap 8 is provided with a sleeve 30 for attaching the socket to a fixture and also for the admission of the conductors.
By increasing the size of the body portion 1 as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 a switch may be embodied in my improved socket. The body portion 1 is provided with a central recess for the reception of the switch block 32, secured upon a shaft 33, extending through the body portion 1 and provided with a key 34, for turning the same.
The central contact plate 12 is made of spring metal, which tends to hold the same below the line of the central contact 18 of the lamp. .The elongated arms of the switch block32 act upon the under side of the central contact plate 12 and force it against the central contact plate 18 of the lamp and completes the circuit. The outer cont-act plate 1 1 contacts with the metal shell 9 of the lamp. The metal cap 8 is provided with an annular flange 36, for securing a shade holder 38 upon the lamp socket.
The shade holder 88 may be made in one piece, as the central collar 39 of the shade holder will readily fit over the cylindrical portion of the metal cap 8 and when the \ided upon its inner surface with a screw 1 latter is screwed upon the lamp sleeve 2 the collar 39 of the shade holder will be securely clamped between the flange 36 of the metal cap 8 and the flange 4: of sleeve 2.
It will be seen that my improved lamp socket consists of three main pieces; the body portion, the lamp sleeve, and the metal cap, which are secured together by the screw threaded portions of the lamp sleeve and the cap. By unscrewing the last mentioned parts, the body portion may be removed, making the contact plates and the switch accessible.
The usual metal lamp sleeve 45 shown in Fig. 8, may be used upon the body portion 1 in place of the contact plate 14 if so desired without departin from my invention.
Having thus descri ed my invention, I
claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat-' embracing said cap, said cut:
1. In a lamp socket, the combination of a body portion of insulating material, a lamp sleeve of insulating material adapted to receive the plug end of an electric lamp, contact plates adapted to contact with the end of the plug of a lamp, and a cap secured to the said insulating sleeve adapted to rigidly hold said body portion against said insulating sleeve.
2.'In a lamp socket, the combination of a body portion of insulating material, a
lamp sleeve of insulating material adapted adapted to contact with the metal shell of the lamp plug.
3. In a lamp socket, the combination of a body portion of insulating material a lamp sleeve of insulating material, a flange formed upon said sleeve, a cap secured to said sleeve and embracing said body portion, a flange upon said ca a lamp shade ange upon said sleeve and the said flange upon said cap adapted to securely hold said lamp shad between the same.
