To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES DnannnAoH, a citizen of the United States,- residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway- (Jrossings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact' description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in railways, and particularly to the crossings of two railways, the object of the invention being to produce a means whereby the crossings may be so constructed that a passing train moving over the same will not make a jolt or jar as is the case at the present time Where both the intersections are open.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device, and yet one which will be exceedingly eifec' tive for the purposes for which it is de signed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appearby a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of ref erence indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a complete crossing showing my improved structure installed thereon. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on a line XX of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, 1 designates the rails of the railway going in one direction, and 2 designates the rails going in the other direction, while an indicates the gap caused by the intersection.
Ininslalling my improved apparatus I first provide two sliding rails 3 and 4: dis posed at the intersection, such rails being beveled so that when they slide together to close the gaps c as will be described hereinafter, they will form one continuous straight rail across the intersection. At each side of the intersection I provide blocks 5 fulcrumed at their inner ends as at 6, such blocks moving over pins 7 having nuts 8 on their outer ends.- interposed between the the outer ends of the blocks 5 normally nuts 8 and blocks 5 are springs 9 which hold against the inside of the rails 1, such blocks 5 being beveled at such ends as at 10, to receive the flanges of the wheels as the same ride along the rails 1. When said flanges move between said blocks 5 and the rails 1 they move said blocks inwardly and cause them to drive links 11 and 12 in such direction as will push bell cranks 13 downward. to drive links 14 and 15 insuch'a manner as to cause connecting links 16 to slide the rails 3 and 4 in opposite directions by reason of the links 16 being slidably fulcrumed to both of said rails 3 and 4 and when said rails slide in opposite directions, as described, they fill up the gaps a, and as stated, said rails 3 and 4: being beveled when this gap is filled, there is formed a continuous connecting rail from each of the rails on each side-of the intersection. After the train passes over the intersection the springs Hand'springs l7 interposed between the links 12 and the side of the rails 1 pulls the entire mechanism back into such position as to close the blocks 5 against the sides of the rails 1 and to open the rails 3 and 4 to leave the intersection freely open for any train which might be passing in the opposite direction, which train would then perform a similar operation on its track by reason of my improved mechanism being disposed on all four sides of the intersection.
The rails 3 and 4 are held in their slidable positions by means of blocks 18 and '19 suitably secured in the intersection.
Fiom the foregoing description it will readily appear that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specificationsets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of, the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to seon each side of the intersection and-being held in normal contact with the sides of the rails, two sliding rails on each side of v1s described.
