-with the main electrodes in order to avoid the use of excessivelyhigh initialrvoltage which would otherwise be necessary to strike an arc directlyvacross theiair gap between the electrode terminals. These igniting or starting electrodes have heretofore been arranged that they become intensely heated by the hot gases in the furnace, in conse-' quence of which they lose their stiffness, become liable to bend, and thus give rise to disturbances. culties and to attain certain added advantages,lprovide means for cooling the igniting electrodes without in anyway interfer ing with their freedom of adjustment. For example, each starting electrode may be laterally inclosed by a water jacket which is best arranged to fit said electrode as closely as is consistent with free longitudinal adjustment of the electrode therein. Since it also is advisable to cool the main as well as the auxiliary electrodes, it is convenient to connect the cooling jacket of an igmiting electrode with the coolin means for an adjacent main electrode. The main electrodes may be hollow. and cooling water may thus hc circulated through them internally from the water jackets of their respective auxiliary electrode or vice versa. low sleeve within which is slidably mounted the igniting electrode. The annular space between the tube and the conduit serves as a jacket wherein water cools the igniting electrode externally and then passes on to'the main electrode which, in the example supposed, is cooled internally. A unitary and compact cooling system is thus provided for preventing undue heating of cithcr the main or the auxiliary electrodes.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown diagrammatically an assemblage of apparatus elements embodying the present invention. For purposes of illustration the invention is shqwn as applied to diverging electrodes.'
