ALBERT SCHMIDT, or FLINT, MICHIGAN, AssICNoP. To CHAMPION IGNITION CoMrANY,
F FLINT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION 0F MICHIGAN.
. TERMINAL FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent. l PatentdJung 18, 1912 Application filed November 27, 1911. Serial No. 662,570.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known .that I, ALBERT SCHMIDT, a
I Citizen of the United states of America,
residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State. of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Terminal Fastenings, of .which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a terminal fastening `for electrical conductors and more particularly to a terminal fastening especially adapted for attaching an electrical conductor to a spark plug of an internal combustion motor, and its object is to provide a very simple, cheap and efficient de vice which maybe quickly and easily detached from or attached -to a spark plug and when attached will permit the free turning of the fastening upon the plug. The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a side 'elevation of a spark plug and a terminal fastening embodying the invention shown detached therefrom; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the fastening; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the same; and Fig. 4, a longitudinal section taken at right angles to that of Fig. 3;
The spark plug or other device to which A the electrical conductor l is to be attached;
is provided with a post or stem 2 having an annular groove 3, and a plug 4 formed at one end to fit tightly within an insulating sleeve 5 is provided at its opposite end with an eye 6 connected to the plug by a shank or 4neck portion 7, and having an opening to receive the post 2 which lits loosely therein when inserted therethrough. The electrical conductor l is secured within the lingers 8 which are integral with the shank at theirinner ends and are free to yield at their outer free ends. These outer ends of the fingers are bent inwardly after being severed, so that they project into the opening in the eye a short distance to engage the groove 3 in the stem when said stem'is inserted in said opening. The upper end of said post is preferably rounded so that .it will enter the eye readily and, engaging the inwardly projecting ends of said fingers, spring thein-outward to permit the post to pass and when moved into alinement with the groove therein, they will spring into said groove and detachably hold the eye in place upon the post, at the same time making a good electrical contact with the post. A very simple fastening is thus secured which is cheap to manufacture and gives a flexible and rotatable connection which may be readily disconnected.
l. A terminal fastening comprising an eye to receive a'member having a groove, said eye being cut transversely to the axis of the opening of said eye to form a yielding portion and said portion being bent to project into the opening of said eye and engage the said groove.
2. A terminal fastening comprising an eye member to receive a,l member having a groove, said eye being out transversely to the axis of the opening of said eye along parallel lines to forma yielding portion integral with the eye nieniber at one en'd and' said portion being severed at the outer side of the eye to forni like spring arms, the free ends of which said arms are bent 1nward to project into the opening of said eye and engage said groove.
3. The combination with a member hav-y -ing an annular groove, ofl a plug having an eye portion and a shank portion connecting the eye and plug, said eye being cut transversely of the axis of the opening thereof along parallel lines to form a portion integral with the shank and said portion being severed at the outer side of said eye to form like spring arms with the free ends of said arms bent inwardly to engage said groove, and an insulating sleeve secured to t-he plug` andJ adapted to receive an electrical conductor. f
4. A terminal fastening comprising an eye to receive a member to which it is adapted to be-attached and formed with an integral yielding portion to engage said member and pf substantially the same size as 'the eye portion.
5. A terminal fastening comprising an eye -to receive a member` to. which it is adapted -to be attached and spring fingers of subsaid eye and bent to form a yielding portion having a releasable locking engagement with said member. I
7. A terminal .fasteningycompri'sing an eye toreceive a member'to whichI it is adapted to be attached and having an integral yielding locking portion formed solely from said eye..
8. A terminal vfastening comprismg an eye 'to receive a member to which it isadapte'd io be attached and formed With a yieldable split eye` providing a'locln'ng portion.
In testimony whereof I aftx my slgnature in presence of two witnesses.
