To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILBER E. BOWER- SOGK, of Lawrence, in the county of Douglas, State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Keys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to improvements in keys for locking pulleys, cams, gears or rotary driven tools to their drive shafts at any point desired in the length of the shaft.
To these ends the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts all as will be now described and the particular features of novelty pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention,Figure 1 is a sectional view of a rotary paper scoring tool provided wit-h the locking key embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view at right angles to Fig. 1; Figs. 8 and 4 are perspective views, respectively, of the key and its retainer removed from the tool.

For the purpose of illustrating the present invention the locking key has been shown in connection with a rotary tool for scoring paper, such tool being indicated by the letter A in the drawings. It has a central opening a, through which the shaft a extends as usual. In 'proximityto the central opening a there is formed a cylindrical bore or passage a extending preferably entirely through the tool parallel with the central opening and at one side opening or merging into the said central opening. This cylindrical bore or channel a forms a hearing or seat for a locking key a preferably of metal, substantially cylindrical in cross sec tion but having a flat face 64 whereby the diameter of the key is reduced in one direction. The key fits snugly in its seat but may be turned to bring either its minor or major diameter radial to the center opening.
To permit the key to be turned .one end beyond the face of the tool A is squared as at a for the reception of a suitable wrench or the key may be operated in any other suitable or preferred manner. It is important that the key a should not move endwise, in its seat, and, as shown in the drawings, endwise movement is prevented by means of a featheretainer of of metal mounted in a seat a in the face of the central opening a and with its inner edge flush with said face. The feather or retainer extends through one side of a circumferential groove a formed in the body of the key a and is itself held in place by the shaft on which the tool is mounted.
From the above description it will be seen that when the key is turned to bring its fiat face next the center opening or shaft the tool will be free and may be moved along the shaft to any point desired. If, however, the key be given a partial rotation to bring its major diameter radial t0 the center opening or shaft, the shaft will be gripped firmly and the tool securely locked thereto.
The key has a long bearing in the tool and also on the shaft so that the pressure is evenly and widely distributed and as a consequence may be turned with sufficient force to insure a firm locking of the parts together without danger of injuring the shaft or rupturing the tool.
What I claim is 1. In a device such as described, the com bination with a rotary shaft, of a driven member mounted thereon, having a cylindrical key way therein at one side of and par-' allel with the shaft, an axially rotatable key fitting in the key seat and adapted to be positively rotated into and out of cont-act with the shaft, and means carried by the driven memberand engaging the key intermediate its ends for preventing endwise movement of the key.
2. In a device such as described the combination with a shaft, of a driven memberprovided with a central bore through which the shaft passes, and having a cylindrical key seat parallel with the central bore and open at one side to said central bore, an axially rotatable key mounted in said key seat and formed with a circumferential groove intermediate its ends and a retainer carried by said driven member and extending into the groove in the key to prevent endwise movement of said key.
3. In a device such as described, the combination with the rotary member having two parallel substantially cylindrical openings extending therethrough and in com munication throughout their length, anda transverse slot formed in the adjacent walls of said openings, of a substantially cylindrical key ournaled in one of said openings and having a cut away portion at one side and a circumferential groove in the plane of said slot and a retainer located in the slot and passing into the groove, said re- 10 tainer having one edge substantially flush with the other opening.
