Description
B. R. BENJAMIN.
GRAIN BINDER.
UNITED STATES PIENT OFFICE.
BERT R. BENJAMIN, OF OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER COMPANY, A CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY.
GRAIN-BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1912.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BERT It. BENJAMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to grain binders, and in particular to improved means for retarding the descent of the heads of the grain as it moves downward upon the inclined deck of the binder attachment of a harvester during the operation of the packers in forming a bundle.
It consists of a retarding member having one end thereof pivotally connected with one of the discharge arms of the grain binder in a manner whereby a limited swinging movement thereof is permitted and hav- `of a retarder while the grain is* being packed by the packers and will be removed from the deck while the discharge arms are ejecting the sheaf and thereby relieve the discharge arms of so much of the power required to force the grain beyond the endof the retarder as is necessary when the common form of spring-pressed retarder is used. These objects are attained by means of the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of part of a grain binder having my invention embodied in its construction and Fig. 2 is a side view of part of Fig. 1 designed to illustrate the manner of connecting the grain retarder with one of the discharge arms of the binder attachment.
The same reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views.
1 represents the inclined deck of a grain binding attachment; 2 the packer fingers; 3 the trip and compressor arm; 4 the knetter actuating shaft having the discharge arms 5 secured thereto; 6 a knotter actuating wheel secured to shaft t; 7 the knotter frame having the knetter shaft journa-led therein; 8 the breast plate secured to the knotter frame; 9 the discharge arm stripper, all of the above named parts being common in the class of machines indicated.
10 represents a grain retainer comprising a flat bar having a slotted opening at one end thereof that receives one of the discharge arms, and provided with transversely arranged eye portions upon opposite sides of the open end of the slot that receive a pivot bolt 11 whereby the retainer is pivotally connected with the discharge arm in a manner permitting a limited swinging movement of the retainer relative to the discharge arm. The retainer has a length that, when the discharge arm is at the end of its sheaf discharging movement, the opposite end of the retainer will rest upon the deck of the grain binder and the retainer will incline outward and upward in a manner preventing any outward swing of the lower end thereof as the bundle is being formed, and the discharge arm carries it upward and over the knotter actuating shaft as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, when the sheaf is being ejected, and when the discharge arm is nearing the end of its revolution the retainer swings downward to a sheaf receiving position.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A grain binder having, in combination,
a deck, a knotter, a rotatable knotter actuating shaft, a discharge arm secured to said shaft, and a grain retainer carried by said discharge arm.
2. A grain binder having, in combination, a deck, a knotter, a rotatable knetter actuating shaft, a discharge arm secured to said shaft, and a grain retainer having one end secured to said discharge arm and the opposite end thereof engaging with said deck when said discharge arm has reached the limit of its sheaf discharging movement..
3. A grain binder having, in combination, a deck, a knotter, a rotatable knot-ter actuating shaft, a discharge arm secured to said end of said retainer engaging With said deck when said discharge arm has reached the limit of its sheaf discharging movement.
BERT R. BENJAMIN.
shaft, a grain retainer having an open-ended slot at one end thereof and eye portions upon opposite sides of said slot7 a bolt received by said eye portion whereby said retainer is pivotally connected With said dis- Witnesses: charge arm in a manner having a limited C. G. GRZEGORZEWSKI, swinging movement thereon7 the opposite E. L. BACON.
