SPEED-RECORDING APPARATUS FOR VEHICLES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jiiiior. Soi-Hickman, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Schwenningen, in the Kingdom of llVurtteniberg, in said Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speed- Recording Apparatuses for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to speed-recording apparatuses for vehicles, and more especially to the marking devices for the same. In similar apparatuses heretofore employed, the main objection to the same was that the proper and reliable marking was impaired by exterior influences, for the reason that the marking devices were functioning satisfactorily either on good smooth roads, or only on bad roads, or that they were functioning reliably only at slow speed on good roads, while they are functioned poorly and unreliably at high speed, and failed to mark the speed entirely on rough roads at high speed.
The obj ect of this invention is to overcome the defects referred to and to so improve the marking devices of the speed-recording apparatuses for vehicles that they produce the uniform and reliable working of the marking devices without regard to the good or bad condition of the road and the slow or high speed of the vehicle; and for this purpose the invent-ion consists of an improved marking mechanism for speed-recording apparatus for vehicles in which a recorddisk driven by a clock movement, is moved between a pointed marker on a marking lever and the correspondingly indented poi'- tion of a pressure-spring on said lever so that the marker impresses or engraves the. speed of the vehicle on the record-disk while the marking lever is oscillated by a suitable transmitting mechanism from the axle of the vehicle and positively guided by a guiding device and a cushioning spring, so as to produce the proper marking of the changing speed of the vehicle on the record-disk and furnish an accurate record of the speed of the vehicle from hour to hour as the disk is moved through the marking devices.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents an upright post, which is attached to the base-plate 11 of the speed-recording apparatus. To the post l is applied an oscillating marking lever 2 by means of a sleeve or hub 21. Near the inner end of the marking lever 2 is arranged an upwardly-projecting and pointed marker 3 which takes into a corresponding indentation 4. at the underside of a flat pressure-spring 5, the outer end of which is attached by screws 5 to the marking lever 2. The positions of the pointed marker and indentation may also be reversed, that is to say, the marker may be applied to the spring and the indentation to the lever 2. A recorddisk 6 is applied to the rotatory dial of a clock-movement not shown) and supported excliangeably thereon in a manner similar to the record-disks in watchmens timecontrolling clock The record-disk G may be made of soft paper, preferably tracing paper, which is inserted between the fiat spring 5 and the marker 3, as shown clearly in the detail Fig. 3. The inner end of the flat spring 5 is bent up for permitting the convenient lifting up of the spring for inserting the circumferential portion of the record-disk G. A stop-screw 52 limits the upward movement of the spring 5. The record-disk 6 turns with the dial of the clockmovement once within 2li or 48 hours and is by the latter moved slowly between the marking devices 3 and 4 and pressed by the marker into the indentation of the pressure spring and so that the movement of the marker is scratched or engraved into the record-disk.
The oscillating marking lever 2 is provided with an oblong slot 7 which is engaged by the crank-pin S of a crank-shaft 9. The crank-pin 9 is turned on its aXis at' a speed corresponding to the speed of the vehicle to t-he axle of which the recording apparatus is applied. It moves thereby the marking lever 2 quicker or slower toward or away from the 4center of the clock-movement. The crank-shaft 9 is supported in a neck-bearing of a bridge l0, attached to the side-plate of the apparatus, and a step-bearing of the base-plate 11, and rotated by a motion-transmitting mechanism which is interposed between the axle a of the vehicle and the crank-shaft 9. rIhis motion-transmitting mechanism consists of a pawl 16 which is pivoted to a plate 2() that is actuated by a cam al on the axle o, and intermediate mechanism (E, a3, at, said pawl being provided with a short extension 22 which abuts against a stop-pin 28 on the plate 20. A helical spring 2a is interposed between the base-plate 11 and a bracket 25 on the plate 2O whereby the pawl 1G is held in engagement with the teeth of a ratchet wheel 13 which is mounted on a horizontal shaft 14. rIhe shaft 14; is supported sidewise` of and at right angles to the crank-shaft 9. A check-pawl 2G prevents the turning of the ratchet-wheel in opposite direction to that imparted by the pawl 2G. To the shaft 111- is keyed a worm 15 which meshes with a worm-wheel 12 on the crank-shaft 9. At each rotation ot the axle a of the vehicle, the pawl 16 engages a tooth of the ratchetwheel 18 and moves thereby the crankpin S and the marking lever for a short distance so that the marker is moved over the record-disk 6, while the latter is rotated by the clock-movement. W hen the axle of the vehicle is rotated at high speed, the record-disk is marked by radial zig-zag lines located closely to each other, while at slower speed the zig-Zag lines are at increased distances from each other, and at still slower speed connecting lines between the zig-Zag lines are formed, as shown in F ig. 2. When the motion of the vehicle is arrested a line concentric with the axis of the clock-movement is formed as the recorddisk continues its rotatory movement while the marking devices are at rest and embed or scratch a peripheral line on the recorddisk.
The marking lever 2 is pressed by a helical spring 17 toward the clock-movement which spring prevents in connection with the crank-pin the vibration of the marking devices at the point ot marking and prevents thereby the tearing of the record-disk and the inaccurate marking of the same. To prevent the lateral movement of the marking lever 2, the inner end of the 'same is guided in a grooved bracket 19 on a guidepost 18, so that the marking lever can freely oscillate laterally in the grooved bracket 19 for keeping the marking devices in positive and regular contact with the record-disk and produce t-he accurate and reliable marking of the same.
The speed-controlling apparatus is mainly intended for use with the driving axles of automobiles, but can also be applied to the axle of any other vehicle driven at variable speed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a speed-recording apparatus for vehicles, the combination of a support for a record-disk, marking devices between which the record-disk is moved, and comprising an oscillating marking lever and a pressurespring on the same, a motion transmitting mechanism interposed between the axle of the vehicle and the marking devices for oscillating the latter, and a guide-device for the inner end of the marking lever.
In a speed-recording apparatus for vehicles, the combination of a support for a record-disk, marking devices between which the record-disk is moved, and comprising an oscillating marking lever and a pressurespring on the same, a motion-transmitting mechanism interposed between the axle ot' the vehicle and the marking devices Ltor oscillating the latter, a guide-device for the inner end of the marking lever, and a spring for pressing the marking lever toward the center of the record-disk.
3. In a speed-recording apparatus for vehicles, the combination of a support for a record-disk, oscillating marking devices consisting of a marking lever provided with a pointed marker and a pressure-spring on the same provided with a corresponding indentation above the marker, a motion-transmitting mechanism between the axle of the vehicle and the marking lever, and a guidedevice for the inner end of the marking lever.

In a speed-recording apparatus for vehicles, the combination of a support for a record-disk, marking devices between which the record-disk is moved and consisting of a marking lever having a pointed marker, and a pressure-spring having an indentation above the marker, a crank-shaft, the crankpin of which engages the marking lever, and a motion-transmitting mechanism between the axle of the vehicle and the crank-shaft, a spring pressing the marking lever toward the center of the record-disk, and a grooved post'for guiding the inner end of the marking lever.
