PROJECTILE FOR ORDNANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY STANBRIDGE, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 39 Rotherham road, Tinsley, neal` ShefHeld, England, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Projectiles for Ordnance, for which I have applied for Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 4,253, February 21, 1910, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has reference to the class of projectiles as described in British specifications No. 16707 of 1904 and No. 3033 of 1905 and has for object to improve the flight and also the interior of such projectiles. The hollowing of the head and consequent displacement of metal necessitates a long radius for the ogive that forms the continuation of the parallel walls of such projectiles; as a consequence they compare unfavorably as regards steadiness of Hight with shells having a shorter radius for the ogive and a flat base. I therefore reduce in length and slope the parallel walls toward the base and while retaining a flat base considerably diminish the area thereof. The driving band is in consequence put much farther forward, the proportion of slope at rear, parallel and forward slope depending on the length of shell, this in turn depending on the capacity. This design allows the air to close in behind the projectile when in flight an advantage over projectiles with bases at right angles to the walls, and also assists to steady it; further, the weight of base is reduced., The base plug marked B, in accompanying drawing has in consequence to be modified, the block which is inserted being shaped as follows: It has a central hole (3) with fuse threads and lips inward (b2) and outward (b1) or only outward and at an angle to conform to the curvature or slope (a2) of the base of the shell, also a projecting ange (b4) to stop it from being pushed in the shell on firing.
The walls of the shell may be reduced at the base, so that the closing in, similar to that described in No. 3033 of 1905, may be facilitated and even done cold and shaped as described in specification No. 5363 of 1831, Figure 2. Further to prevent the heat on penetration from ignitingY the bursting charge, also to economize space, I combine with a non-conducting liner such as asbestos marked C, in accompanying drawing and shaped to lit the interior of the shell, a non-corrosive metal liner D, to keep the liner C, rmly against the walls. This metal liner D, serves also to prevent the powder being ignited prematurely should a live shell break up in store. In the case of screw base shell, the said combined liners are easily inserted; in the case of shells with solid bases I claim to put the same in before closing down the walls of the shell.
My invention is illustrated by the annexed drawings in which Fig. 1, shows a section of the shell as above, .with inserted base. Fig. 2, shows a section of a shell with the walls closed in on the interior lining.

Having now particularly described my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim, is
1. A projectile for ordnance comprising a hollow shell having in combination a concave head, a tapering front portion having a long radius of ogive and an inwardly sloping base portion.
2. A project-ile for ordnance comprising a hollow shell having in combination a. concave head, a. tapering front portion having a long radius of ogive and an inwardly sloping base portion, a non-corrosive metal liner forming a chamber for the charge and a liner of non-conducting material held in place by said metal liner.
'3. A projectile for ordnance comprising a hollow 'shell having in combination a concave head, a tapering front portion having a long radius of ogive and an inwardly sloping base portion, an open-ended non- Corroslve metal liner forming a chamber for the charge and an open-ended liner of noneonclucting material held in place by said metal liner, the Walls of the shell and the liners being subsequently closed. in toward one another.
