Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a;
mop fabric support swingingly coupled to a handle and with a sliding member carried by the handle and 7 containing means for twisting the mop fabric.
Other objects of the invention will be disclosed in the following specification and defined by the claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to scription and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device, partly in section and disclosing the mop cloth in wringing position, and. the wringer frame arranged below the handle; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the lowerend of the same as applied to the floor; Fig.
3 is a cross sectional view through the mop handle, showing an upper-end elevation of the frame; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the lower end of the device applied to the floor,
showing the wringer frame arranged above the handle; and, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the device overturned, and with the frame arranged in reversed position from that shown in Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the viewsof the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the reference numeral 10 designates the handle of the mop which is provided against one side and at its lower end with a guide strip 11. At its residing at Denver, Denver and State of Colo rado, have invented certain new and useful .head portion washers 19 engaging against of the loops 18 and the following d esame being seated in v lower end the handle 1O is provided with a ferrule 12 which encircles the lower ends of the handle and guide strip and carries the of the improved device. A flatv link 13 is hinged through the ferrule 12 adjacent to one. edge thereof while a stop pin 14: engages through the ferrule 12 above the link13.
The improved device is provided with a hinged head, the same comprising an angular wire frame 15 carrying a plate 16 thereacross and having its opposite longitudinal edges overturned about the sides of the frame 15 to provide a flat s ade like head. The inner ends of the mem ers 15 are extended into converging arms 17 which are spaced apart and arranged in parallelism at their upper ends for engagement through the opposite ends of the flat link 13 and against the opposite sides of the ferrule 12. Elongated loops 18 are formed upon the upper ends of the arms 17 by overturning the same, the loops extending laterally at substantially right angles from the arms, The loops 18 engage loosely about the stop pin 14, the latter being provided with retaining holding the same in position. The link 13 thus serves as a lock or support for the head while'the stop pin 11 engages in to limit the swinging The outer end of the head extends slightly beyond the outer edge of the plate 16 to accommodate the turnedover; end of a mop cloth 20. the frame preferably comprising a strip or sheet of metal being returned upon itself to provide a sleeve portion 25 being relatively flat and having rounded opposite ends to slidably receive thehandle 10 and guide strip 11. It will be noted from Fig. 3 that the handle 10 and guide strip 11 provide a supporting member which is substantially of elliptical cross section, and that the sleeve 25- may be applied to the supporting member to extend the frame either up or below the handle. The frame 24 is of such length dle or supporting that when it approaches the ferrule 12 the spring 21 will bedepressed and .when the frame passes the shoulder 23 the latter will extend into the path ofthe sleeve 25, providing a catch or lock for the frame. The outer end of the sframe is provided with an elongated downwardly flaring socket 26 receiving therethrough a revoluble shaft 27 having a fixed washer 28at its upper end for engagement the shaft 27 from longitudinal movement through the frame. A slidingwasher 29 is carried midway of the ends upon the shaft 27 and is pressed up for yielding engagement against the lower edge of the socket 26 by an expanding spring 30. The outer end of the spring 30. rests against a fixed Washer 31 carried upon the lower extremity of the shaft 27 and adjacent to a revoluble loop 32 carried upon the lower end of the shaft 27. The revoluble loop 32 is relatively flat and carries the opposite end of the mop cloth 20. As will be noted from Fig. 5 the end of the mop cloth 20 carried by the head is held in a flat or spread position by stitching 33 passing through the openings 34 formed in the opposite outer corners of the head plate 16. The frame 24 is provided with a suitable handle 35 extending from one side thereof and by means of which the frame may be moved longitudinally upon the supporting or handle section. The upper extremity of the shaft 27 terminates in a crank arm 36 located above the fixed washer 28 and adapted to turn the shaft 27. A locking bail 37 is hinged upon the frame 24 and is adapted to be swung up into engagement wit-h the crank arm 36 when under tension to hold the same from movement. Preferably this locking bail 37 is arranged for frictional contact against the opposite sides of the frame 24 so as to yieldlngly remain in adjusted position when swung up into engagement with the handle 36 or moved out of the path of the same.
In Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the drawing the guide strip 11 is disclosed in position upon the upper side of the handle 10 and in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5, the frame 24 is shown extending down from the under side of the handle. When it is desired to twist the mop cloth 20 to expel the excess moisture therein the head is swung down into substantially longitudinal alinement with the handle 10 by the Weight of the cloth 20, such downward movement being limited by the stop pin 14 engaging in the lower ends of-the loops 18.
en, however, the mop is adjusted for use, as is disclosed in Fig. 2, the frame 24 is moved down to the lower end of the hanmember and held in such position by the spring catch 21. The mop cloth 20 engages against the under side of the head plate 16 and is forced flat upon the handle 10. In Fig. 4
with the socket 26 to hold the floor by the plate when the head of the mop is :pressed down. It will be seen that the operator can stand erect and operate the mop as the head 16 swings into the desired angle by a downward pressure upon disclosed with the guide strip 11 engaging against the inner side of the sleeve portion 25 and carries for engagement.thereagainst the spring 21, and in Fig. 5 a structure is disclosed with the guide strips 11 engaging against the outer side of the sleeve portion 25. There is no material difference in structure of the device as disclosed in Figs. 4 and 5, the change being effected by simply reversing the position of the frame 24 upon the handle, the frame normally extending up from the handle or supporting member. Fig. 4 discloses to advantage the position of the mop cloth 20 when the frame is adjusted in this position. It is noted that the mop cloth 20 extends from the outer end of the head beneath the head and is overturned and carried up around the outer end of the head to the revoluble loop 32.
In order to operate the wringing mechanism ofthe device, the spring 21 is pressed into the recess or depression 22 and the frame 24 is moved back over the supporting section. When the mop cloth 20 has been drawn taut by the upward movement of the frame 24, the bail 37 is swung out of engagement with the crank handle 36, and the latter is rotated. The crank handle 36 0perates the shaft 27, effecting the rotary movement of the loop his movement of the loop 32 twists the cloth 20 and expels all the excess moisture therefrom. The flaring socket 26 admits of a movement toward and from the handle 10 of the shaft 27, an adjustment found desirable to admit of the yielding of theloop 32 during the twisting of the cloth 20 and also during the operation of the device when applied to the oor.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
In a combined mop and wringer, a handle, a frame having lateral loops, carried by said handle and extending through said loops, means for swingingly connecting said frame to said handle, a member slidable upon said handle, a rotatable device carried by said sliding member, and a mopping fabric connected to said frame and to said rotatable device.
2. In a combined mop and wringer, a handle, a frame including spaced sides and a connecting plate, means for swingingly connecting said frame to said handle, lateral loops at the inner ends of said frame members, a pin carried by said handle and extending through said loops, a member slidable upon said handle, a rotatable device carried by said sliding member, and a mopping fabric connected to said frame and to said rotatable device.
3. In a combined mop and wringer, a
handle, a frame comprising spaced side 5 members having terminal loops, a plate secured to said side members, a pin secured to said handle and extending through said loops, a link carried by said handle and engaging around said frame sides, a member 10 slidable upon said handle, a rotatable device carried by said sliding member, and a mopping fabric connected to said frame and to said rotatable device.
4. In a combined mop and Wringer, a
15 handle, a frame swingingly connected to said handle, another frame slidable upon said handle and having a flaring socket, a rod mounted for rotation through said socket and movable laterally therein toward and away from the handle, a mopping fabric 20 connected to said frame and to said rod, and means for rotating said rod to apply a twisting strain to said fabric.
