- I I 1 W I .WALTER H. SMITH, OF NILES, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE HARRIS AUTOMATIC PRESS 'of- Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dampening Mechanism for Printing-Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to. be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object ofthis invention is to provide 'means for simultaneously cont-rob ling the transfer'rolls of a lithographic or other printing press so that they may be moved simultaneously into and out of position, and-also be capable of being moved out p of and returned automatically to-normal posit-ion independently of and without affecting the controlling means.

detail.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a frame which is shown as 'held by capped screws 2 to the main press frame 3-, a por-j tion only of which is shown. This frame 1 1 supports-a water or other fluid-containing pan 4: wherein runs a roll 5 whose shaft is mounted in fixed bearings. As customary,
a ductorroll 6 is intended to intermittently engage roll 5' and transfer moisture there-Q from to .a third roll, andsaid ductor roll,
. for this reason, is shown as journaled in arms 7 of ashaft-B which may be oscillated by any suitable means.
The third roll constitutes the moisture distributing medium; it is shown at"9, and its shaftisjenrnaled inasleeve 10 which is fissd y h ldin h s f th f me by wet l serew1'2. Any suitable means may be -em- 4 Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 4,1910. Serial No. 553,270.
an arm 17 of sleeve 10. (See a provide means. whereby the transfer rolls may be adjustedwhile the machine is'in motion, and also be' I readily movable from their supports and capable of being replaoed without adjustment; relatively to the press cylinder with which they cooperate. 1 L
' The invention will be hereinafter fully set. forth and particularly pointed .out in the W The. two rolls are carried by upper and In the accompanying'drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, a portion of a printing press; cylinder being shown. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the side frameof the dampening; mechanism removed. Fig. 3is' a plan view of the mechanism at one side of the press; Fig. 4 is a view in perspective. ' mmrnnine MECHANISM FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
Patented June 11, 1912.
' :ployed for rotating the distributing roll provided such rotation be at the face speed of the plate-carrying cylinder; According to the means shown, a gear wheel 13 meshes with a gear wheel 14 of the plate-carrying cylinder 15, and also witlr the'zgear wheel 16 on the shaft of roll 9, causing the latter to revolve at the face speedof; the cylinderf This gear wheel 13 is mounted? on a stud of 18 and 19 designate upp r anci lower dampening rolls for transfeisting moisture from the main distributing 'roll 9 to the plate of cylinder 15. It is the purpose of my invention to enable the rolls to be engaged by the plate or raised portion of a cylinder, and automatically return to their normal positions when free of such plate or raised portionfand likewise to enable the rolls to be adjusted while the machine is in motion, as well as-be capable of beingsimultaneously thrown out of and into engagement with the plate cylinder by means which will not interfere with the independent i movement of each roll and its support. The
means shown for accomplishing these objects may be .varied, but that shown is preferred.
whereupon the journals of the rolls may be 100 passed outwardly through slots in the ends The bearings have lugs 23 of the arms. for engaging adjustable stops 23 of the. arms, said stops serving as guides in restoring the rolls and bearings.
or manually shifting the two dampening rolls simultaneously, that is to say, for throwing them into or out of engagement with the late-carrying cylinder, I provide upper an lower crossed levers 24 and 25 110 moved out of their normal positions when These bearings are held,
. By turnin which are shown'in the form'of hubs loose on the fixed sleeve 10 and having long and short arms. With the short arms, (which Thenpper lever 24 controls the lower roll,
while the lower lever 25 controls the upper roll. By forcing or moving apart the long arms these levers will effect the simultaneous disengagement of the rolls from the plate-cylinder and swing them circumferent-ially around, the distributing roll 9 with which they are preferably designed to remain infcontact. By adjusting the screws 28 the rolls may be adjusted toward or away from the plate cylinder to regulate the degree of contact therewith, and this adjustment may be effected while the press is'in operation.
effect the shifting of the dampening rolls shown comprises a cam 30 which lies between the long arms of the levers and is carried by a shaft 31 having a handle 32. this shaft so as to present the narrow si es of the cam to the lon arms the latter will be moved apart (see ig. 2) their hubs turning on the fixed sleeve 10. In this way the rolls will be removed from the cylinder since the short arms of the levers transmit the motion of the latter to I the two'roll-carrying arms. When the fiat sides of the cam are presented to the long arms of the levers the rolls will be moved into position to engage the plate, the upper roll and its arm movin downward by gravity, although it may e accelerated'by spring pressure. To effect the proper positioning of the lower roll I preferably employ a coiled spring 33 which acts on a rod 34 pivoted to the outer end of the arm carrying the lower roll. This rod is shown as passed through a relatively fixed part 35 against which the lower end of the spring bears. By this, means the lower dampeningroll will have, the samedegree of contact with the plate cylinder as the upper roll.
The set screw 28 of the upper roll-carry- 1ng arm bears down upon the short arm of the lower lever 25, while the set screw of the lower roll-carrying arm bears up against the short arm of the upper lever 24, being so held by spring 33. In consequence, both rolls and their supports may be swung away, from normal position when the rolls are en-. gaged by the plate or raised ortion of a cyhnder, and upon being free rom the late ter return to position automatically. This movement of the rolls and their supports has no effect upon, andis in no way prevented by, the manually-o erative means by which both rolls are simu taneously moved into and out of position.
t the particular means after the eccentric bearings are removed.
It will be understood that I have shown but oneside of; a press, and that" the mechanism is substantially duplicated at the other side, with this exception, however, that the gear wheel 13 and its supporting arm are requiredon only one side'. It will also be understood that my. invention is not confined to the details of construction and ar- I the drawings, but such means I believe'to be best adapted for attaining the desired The means for actuatin the levers to ends. p
The advantages of my invention will be readily understood. the u'pper and lower dampening rolls may, with facility, be adjusted while the press is It will be. seen that i in operation, both inrelation to the platecarrying cylinder and to the moisture-distributing roll, and'that by means of a single element they may be permitted to simulta neously engage with, or be disengaged from,.'the press cylinder, and that independently of such means each roll is capable of being moved away from and auto matically returned to its normal position. There is no positive connection between the rolls or their supporting arms and the shifting means. y
