To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN RALPH SWAINE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Hydrocarbon-Burner, of which the following is a specification. The objects of my invention are to provide a burner of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, especially designed for use in connection with gasolene or other hydrocarbon fuel.
More specifically, it is my object to provide a device of this kind inrwhioh the heat generated by the burning gas is applied for heating the gas generating tube in which the gasolene is converted into gas, and, further, to provide simple, inexpensive, and easily operated means for regulating the flow of said gas.
A further object is to provide detachable tubes having gas passageways therein and so arranged that any of them may be readily, quickly and easily removed for the purpose of cleaning out the gas passageways when obstructed, said parts being so arranged that they may be easily and quickly replaced and will form gas tight connections at all times.
My invention consist-s in the construction, arrangement, and combination, of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointedout in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whicha Figure 1 shows a front elevation of a hydrocarbon burner embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a vertical, central sectional view of same. Fig. 3 shows a side elevation of a modified form of burner embodying my invention, and Fig. t shows a vertical, central, sectional view of same.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10' to indicate the tube in which the hydrocarbon gas is generated. This tube is screw-threaded at its lower end and is filled with a number of solid wires 11 surrounded by a layer of asbestos 12, the space between the wires being Specification of letters Patent.

sufiicient to receive the proper amount of gasolene for feeding thebur-ner. The lower end of the tube'12 is screwed into a block 18 which has a small gas passageway 14; therein to carry the gas to the bottom of the block. Screwed to the lower end of theblock 13 is a cross head 15. This cross head is provided with a central screw threaded'chamber 16, and on each 'side of said chamber is a small gas passageway 17 communicating withthe central chamber 16 and adjacent to the pas-, sageway 17 is an enlarged gas passageway having an inclined shoulder at 18. At the outer end of the cross head 15 is a hollow chamber 19 open at both ends and screw threaded at its, upper end.- Loosely mounted in the chamber 19 is a small tube 20 extended vertically and having a small gas passageway 21- at its too, an enlarged gas chamber 22at its central port-ion, and an enlarged chamber below the part 22 screwthreaded ,oniits interior to'receive the screw plug 23. Communicating with the gas chamber22 at one sideisa gas passageway 24. D-etachably mounted int-he enlarged chamber adjacent to the shoulder 18 of the cross head is a tube 25 tapered at both ends and having a gas passageway 26 extended longitudinally through it. This tube is of such length that when one end thereof is in engagement with the shoulder 18, the other end will enter the gas passageway 24 and I have arranged for holding the tubes 20 and- 24: firmly in position by means of a setscrew 27 extended through the outer end of the cross head 15 to engage the tubes 20. Screwed into the upper end of the cross head 15 is a tube '28 having a number of openings 29 therein. Above these openings is a deflector 30 for drawing air into said openings. Detachably mounted on top of the tube 28 is a tube 31'extended upwardly parallel with the tube 10 and having at its top an enlarged pipe 32 curved outwardly and thendownwardly. Thelower end of this pipe 32 is designed to receive. a gas mantle of ordinary construction which will be supported in an inverted position adjacent to the tube 10.
which is screw-threaded at its lower end and In practical operation with this part of the device, it is obvious that the gas may freely pass through the passageway 14 into the chamber 16, then through the passageway 17, then through the passageway 26 of the tube 25, then through the passageway 24 into the chamber 22, and from thence through the small passageway 21 to the interior of the pipe 28 where it is commingled with air and permitted to discharge through the lower end of the pipe 32.
Assuming that for any reason the small passageway 21 should become clogged, the operator may have access to it for cleaning purposes as follows: First, the set-screw 27 is released which will permit the tube to drop downwardly. Then the plug 23 may I be removed and the passageway 21 may be readily and easily cleaned. Then when the tube 20 is replaced a gas tight connection is made between it and the tube 25 by forcing the tube 20 against the tapered end of the tube 25 by means of the set-screw 27. If the passage-way in the tube 25 should in any way become clogged, the tube 25 may be removed after the tube 20 has been taken out as the said tube 25 is of a size to readily and easily pass downwardly through the opening 19. The said set-screw 27 also serves to form a gas tight connection between the tube 25 and the inclined shoulder 18 of the cross head.
My improved means for regulating and cutting off the flow of gas from the lower end of the tube 20 comprises the following parts: The numeral 33 indicates a tube, screw-threaded at its upper end, and seated in the lower portion of the screw-threaded chamber 16. This tube 33 is provided with a screw-threaded extension 34 on its lower end having a tubular chamber 35 therein. Screwed to the bottom of the extension 33 is a block 36, the space between the lower end of the tube 33 and the block being pro vided with a packing material 37. Screwed into the lower end of the block 36 is a guide tube 38 having a screw-threaded plug 39 at its lower end. Extended through the parts 33, 36, 38, and 39 is a rod 40 having fixed thereon, within the cylindrical chamber 35, a disk 41, the upper end of the rod above the disk being screw-threaded at 42 and pointed at its upper end to enter the lower end of the passage-way 14. Mounted on the lower end of the rod. 40 is a head 43 held to the rod 40 by means of two screw-threaded rods 44 I its lower end. Furthermore, when turned in one direction, its upper end prevents the escape of gas from the passageway 14, and when in said position, the disk 41 will also be seated against theadjacent portion of the tube 33 to form a gas tight joint at said side. If the rod 40 is unscrewed, then a free passageway is provided for the gasolene from the passageway 14, and, furthermore, the packing 37 prevents the gas from following down along the rod 40.
One of the advantages of the construction referred to is that, by having the head 43 held in place on the rod 40 by means of two screw-threaded rods, a good handle is provided and at the same time, if pressure is applied to the handle in an excessive degree, the head 43 will turn on the rod 40 and will not break the rod as would be the case if a solid cross head were applied to' the lower end of the rod.
In a modified form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, I have illustrated a device which differs from the one described only in that there is a single upright pipe .45 corresponding to the pipe 31 and at the upper end thereof are two pipes 46 corresponding to the pipes 32 and inclined outwardly and downwardly and then laterally to stand on opposite sides of the central gasol-ene tube 10. The other features of the modified form are the same except that there is only one passageway leading from the lower end of the tube 10 to the lower end of the pipe 45.
It is obvious that all parts of the device illustrated are of simple and inexpensive construction and that access may be had to any of them quickly and easily for purposes of cleaning, repairing or replacing same.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a cross head having a gas passageway therein, and a vertically arranged chamber communicating with the gas passageway, a tube detachably mounted in the gas passageway and having a tapered end in said chamber, a tube mounted in said chamber and having a small gas passageway at its top, an enlarged chamber at its central portion provided with a lateral passageway leading to its side and designed to receive the tapered end of said tube, and a set-screw seated in the cross head to engage said tube and detachably hold it in position with the tapered end of the first mentioned tube inserted in the lateral passageway of the vertically arranged tube.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a cross head having a gas passageway therein, and a vertically arranged chamber communicating with the gas passageway, a tube detachably mounted in the gas passageway and having a tapered end in said chamber, a tube mounted in said chamber and having a small gas passageway at its top, an enlarged chamber at its central portion provided with a lateral passageway leading to its side and designed to receive the tapered end of said tube, and a set-screw seated in the cross head to engage said tube and detachably hold it in position with the tapered end of the first mentioned tube inserted in the lateral passageway of the vertically arranged tube, and a plug screwed into the lower end of the vertically arranged tube to close the lower end of the chamber therein.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a cross head having a vertically arranged chamber therein open at both ends, a tube loosely mounted in said chamber and having a small passageway at its top, an enlarged chamber at its central portion communicating with the passageway, and a lateral passageway at its side communicating with the central chamber, a tapered projection connected with the cross head and having a gas passageway therein, said tapered projection beingdesigned to enter the end of the lateral passageway, and a set-screw in the cross head designed to detachably hold the tube in position to form a gas tight joint between said tapered projection and the lateral passageway.

In a device of the class described, the combination ofa generating tube, a block screwed to the lower end thereof and having apassageway therein, a cross head screwed to said block, said cross head being provided with a gas chamber communicating with said passageway in the block, a laterally extended passageway communicating with said chamber, and a vertically arranged chamber in the outer end of the cross head communicating with the said lateral passageway, said horizontal passageway being enlarged at its outer end and provided with an inclined shoulder, a tube placed in the outer end of said lateral passageway and inclined at both ends and having a passageway extending through it, the inner inclined end of said tube being designed to engage said shoulder, a tube detachably mounted in the chamber at the outer end of the cross head, said tube having a central gas chamber, a small passageway at its top, a laterally extended passageway at its central portion, the latter being designed to receive the tapered outer end of said tube, a detachable plug screwed into the lower end of said vertically arranged tube, and a set-screw seated in the outer end of the cross head and designed to engage the side of the vertically arranged tube to detachably hold it in position forming a gas tight connection between the passageway in the taperedended tube and the chamber in the vertically arranged tube.
5. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a gas generating tube, a block connected to the lower end thereof and having a passageway extended through it, a cross head connected to the lower end of said block and having a gas chamber therein, a tube screwed into the lower end of said gas chamber and having a cylindrical chamber at its lower end, a block screwed to the lower end of the said tube, and provided with a chamber for packing material, a rod extended through said block and tube and seated in the tube, and having a pointed upper end designed to close the passageway in the lower end of the first mentioned block.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a gas generating tube, a block connected to the lower end thereof and having a passageway extended through it, a cross head connected to the lower end of said block and having a gas chamber therein, a tube screwed into the lower end of said gas chamber and having a cylindrical chamber at its lower end, a block screwed to the lower end of the said tube, and provided with a chamber for packing material, a rod extended through said block and tube and seated in the tube, and having a pointed upper end designed to close the passageway in the lower end of the first mentioned block, and a disk mounted on said rod and designed to engage the upper end of the chamber in said tube.
7 In a device of the class described, the combination of a gas generating tube, a block connected to the lower end thereof and having a passageway extended through it, a cross head connected to the lower end of said block and having a gas chamber therein, a tube screwed into the lower end of said gas chamber and having a cylindrical chamber at its lower end, a block screwed to the lower end of the said tube, and provided with a chamber for packing material, a rod extended through said block and'tube and seated in the tube, and having a pointed upper end designed to close the passageway in the lower end of the first mentioned block, and a guide tube screwed to the lower end of the last mentioned block, and having a screw-threaded cap at its lower end provided with an opening for said rod.
8. In a device of the class described, a generating tube, a cross head at the base of said tube and having at its outer end an enlarged chamber, a mixing tube attached to said cross head above said enlarged cham ber, and a short tube within the chamber of said cross head and laterally removable therefrom, said tube having openings in its side and top for transmitting gas from said cross head to said mixing tube.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination of a vertically arranged gas generator and tube, a cross head at the base of said tube having a gas passageway therefor crowding said short tube sidewise to inthrough, a mixing tube supported from said sure a tight joint at said lateral opening. v 10 Des Moines Iowa, June 23, 1909.
