WING-CARRIER.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVALTER F. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Wing-Carrier, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are to provide means for, at will, varying the shape of the carrier without altering the operative position of the same; to provide supporting means for the carriers adapted for employment on threshing machines and arranged to conform to the'structure thereof; and to provide a driving mechanism having an eX- tensible member to permit the swing of the carrier relative to'the driving shaft therefor.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the end of a threshing machine showing in connection therewith a carrier constructed and arranged in accordance with the-present invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a carrier constructed andarranged in accordance with the present invention, and showing in conjunction therewith an end view of a threshing machine upon which the said carrier is supported; and Fig. 3 is a detail view, on an enlarged scale and in vertical section, showing the mounting of the carrier on its supports, the pivot connection thereof and the transmission mechanism for the conveyer chain.
To facilitate the description of the present invention the instrument-alities forming the same are divided into separate groups, which groups are herein designated as follows: the supporting frame, in which is grouped the various members for suspending the carriers in operative relation; the
conveyer and driving mechanism therefor;
and the folding trough and operating mechanism therefor.
The supporting frame.As shown in the accompanying drawings, the carrier is supported on a frame and at the outer end of a boom 9. The boom 9 is formed of metal tubing and is suitably mounted in T-heads 10 and 11. The head 10 and the cross member thereof are open ended to fit as a collar of the carrier trough, as shown best in Fig.
4 of the drawings. The head 11 is provided with webs 16, 16 extended between the short arm and the cross member of the T-head 11 to reinforce the structure.
The mast 12 is stepped in a socket 17. The socket 17 is fixedly mounted upon the lower front framing of the threshing machine. I The mast 12 is held in position on the frame of the threshing machine by tie rods 18 and 19. The rods 18 and 19 are held in adjusted engagement upon the mast 12 by clamp collars 20 and 21. The tie rods are disposed in any convenient position. upon the framing of the threshing machine to which the carriers are applied.
While there 1s here1n shown and described one wing carrier and supporting mechanism therefor as applied to a threshing machine, it will be understood that in the usual ap- 'plication of the present invention to threshing machines provision is made on both sides of the threshing machine for a structure of the character described. It will, therefore, be understood that the duplication or multiplication of the parts herein described is provided for in the present invention.
The carrier trough and instrumentalities connected therewith are supported by the head 11. The head 11, as stated, supports the pivot 15. It also supports the bracket 22. The lower end of the bracket 22 is curledto form a hinge member 23 wherein rests a hinge pin' 24:. Pivotally connected with the hinge pin 24 is an elongated screw 25. j Thebracket 22 is made rigid by a vertical web 26 with which the said bracket is provided.
The carrier trough and conveyer mounted therein are suspended in horizontal position upon the bracket 22 by means of the screw 25 and the boom 27. The boom 27 is a hollow tube provided with a screw threaded end block 28 which is tapped and the threads whereof engage the threads of the screw 25. The boom 27 is pivoted at 29 on the main framing member of the trough, as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The screw 25 when rotated effects an elongation or contraction of the combined length of the boom 27 and screw25. It is to rotate the screw 25 that there is provided a reversible ratchet lever 30.
When the trough carrier is disposed in desired position a tie rod 31 is secured to an eyelet 32 set out from the side of the socket for one of the supports of the horizontal pivot of the conveyer trough. The tie rod 31 is suitably secured to an eyelet 33 on the side bar of the feeder for the threshing machine.
When the threshing machine is provided with carriers constructed in accordance with the present invention, during the movement of the said machine to and from the field of operation, it is desired that the carrier trough and parts connected therewith should be folded lengthwise against the frame of the threshing machine. In the folded position, as in the extended position, the troughs are supported upon the mast 12, the boom9 and the boom 27. It has been shown, also, that by the manipulation of the collar 13 and the screw 25 the height of the operative position of the outer and the inner ends of the troughs may be varied.
The c01weyer.As seen best in Fig. 2 of the drawings, there is provided a chain 35 having conveyer hooks 36, 36 thereon. The method of construction and the mounting of the said chain and hooks are disclosed in a Patent No. 976,629 for wing carriers granted to me November 22, 1910, to which cross reference is here made. The driving mechanism for the chain 35 consists primarily in a shaft 44. The shaft 44 is a counter-shaft provided in the threshing machine to be equipped with the present wing carriers. The shaft is driven by a belt 45 drivingly connected with any suitable one of the shafts with which the said threshing machine is provided. The end of-the shaft 44 is fitted with a gear casing 46. Within the gear casing (and not shown in the accompanying drawings) are the usual meshed bevel ear wheels,-one of which is fixedly attached to the shaft 44 and the other to the short shaft 47. Between the shaft 47 and the hollow tubular square shaft 48 is'formeda knuckle joint 49. The shaft 47 is suspended by means of a' strap 50, one end whereof is secured in any suitable manner and position upon the frame of the threshing machine.
The square shaft 51 is connected to the shaft 40 by means 'of a knuckle joint 52. The square shaft 51 is slidingly mounted in the hollow of the tubular shaft 48. By rea son of this connection between the shaft 40 and the shaft 44 the necessary elongation or contraction of the combined shaft 4851 the bushing 41 also forms a socket or holding member for the boom 39.
The tr0ugh.-The trough forming a portion of the carriers in the present instance consists of the curved sides 53, 53. The sides 53 are preferably constructed from any suitable form of sheet metal which is reinforced by cross ribs 54, 54. A
The 07)emt0n.VVhen the threshing machine has been equipped with a carrier of the construction and arrangement above de scribed and as shown in the accompanying drawings. and under normal conditions, the boom 9 is extended parallel with the frame of the threshing machine and beyond the end thereof, substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In this position the boom is retained by means of the tie rod 31. When moving to and from the field of operation the carriers are swung on the pivot 15 to rest against the side of the threshing machine. Any suitable means for swinging the carriers are provided. During the swing it will be noticed that the shafts 48-51 are extended to permit this swing of the members. Having arrived at the field of operation the carrier is swung so that the outer end is ad j acent the rick or stack from which the grain is to be fed. The outer end is elevated or depressed and swung about to accommodate the stack or rick, and as the same diminishes in height the carrier is ad-. justed with reference to the height of the rick. This adjustment is accomplished by means of the ratchet lever 30 and the screw 25 in the manner as above described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a wing carrier adapted to be laterally extended from the side of a threshing machine, a supporting frame, comprising a vertical mast; a horizontal boom mounted on said mast, a supporting device adjustably mounted on said mast for maintaining in raised position the said boom, and a plurality of tie rods extended between the frame of the threshing machine and said mast to guide said mast.
2. In a wing carrier adapted'to be laterally extended from the side of a threshing machine, a supporting frame, comprising a vertical mast, a horizontal'boom mounted on said mast, a supporting device a-djustably mounted. on said mast for maintaining in raised position the said boom, a plurality of tie rods extended between the frame of the threshing machine and said mast to guide said mast, a pivot head fixedly mounted on the end of said boom for supportin said carrier, a conveyer mechanism em od ing an endless moving chain, a driving mechanism for moving sald chain, and an extensible transmission mechanism connecting said chain and said driving mechanism.
3. In a wing carrier-adapted to be laterally extended from the side of a threshing machine, a' supporting frame, comprising a vertical mast, a horizontal boom mounted on said mast, a supporting device adjustably mounted on said mast for maintaining in raised position the said boom, a plurality of tie rods extended between the frame of the threshing machine and said mast to guide said mast, a pivot head fixedly mounted on the end of said boom, a bracket depended from said pivot head to form a low pivotal foot rest, an extensible member pivotally connected with said bracket and said carrier, and manually operable means for extending and contracting said extensible member.
4:. In a wing carrier adapted to be laterally extended, a supporting frame comprising a vertical mast; a horizontal boom mounted on said mast, said boom supporting said carrier through its torsional resistance.
