To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA J. BRADSHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waukegan, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new an useful Improvements in Annunciators and Cabinets for Barber-Shops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to annunciators and the invention has for its object to provide an annunciator suitabl for use particularly in a barber Shop, in which the annunciator mechanism may be combined with a cabinet for holding shaving cups, and which is made up of certain novel constructions and mechanisms combined and arranged in a novel manner so as to provide a device of this sort of improved form and character.
The invention is illustrated, in a preferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view of the devi-ce with parts of the frame removed so as to show the' operating mechanisms. Fig. 2 a fragmentary sectional elevation of the upper part of the device. Fig. 3 a sectional plan taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a frame which is divided by the partitions 11 so as to provide a rectangular space l2 within the frame and so as to provide an outer group of cup compartments 13 and an inner group of compartments 14.
In the rectangular space 12 intervening between the compartments 13 and 14 is a rectangular annunciator board 15 on which are inscribed a plurality of characters shown in the drawing as numbers ranging from one to fty-six. 16 is a pointer supported on a carrier chain 17 which runs over the sprocket wheels 18, 19, 20 and 21. p
The mechanism for giving step by step movement to the carrier 17 is made up of the following parts: 22 is a ratchet rigidly secured to sprocket 18. 23 isa pawl carrying member pivoted o-n the stud 24 on vwhich the sprocket turns. 25, 26 and 27 are three pawls of different lengths pivoted by a screw 27 to the member 23. rIhe member 23 is provide the connected by a link 28 with one end of a rocking member 29 which is pivotally mounted on a stud 30 carried on a plate 31 which is secured to the 24 on which the ratchet wheel 18 is mounted is also secured to the plate 31.l 32 designates an electro-magnet having an armature 33 pivotally mounted on a rod 34. The armature 33 has an extension piece -35 which is connected with the lower end of the rock ing member 29 by a link composed of two link elements 36 and 37 connected by a block 38 of fiber or other insulating material. When the magnet 32 is actuatedl and attracts it-s armature, the above described connecting mechanism causes the pawls to ride idly backward over the ratchet 22. The forward or operative movement of the pawls is brought about through the action of a coiled spring 39 which is connected at one end to the upper end of the rocking member 29 and at the other end, by means of the threaded rod 40 and nut 41, to a stud 42 on the plate 31. I preferably employ three pawls, instead of one, in order that the ratchet and pawl mechanism may have no lost motion.
In order to give an audible signal whenever the pointer is moved a step forward, I device with an electric bell 43, which may be of ordinary construction and need not be particularly described, and provide also a pair of contacts connected in the bell circuit, which contacts normally stand apart but are designed to be broughty together when the pawls are given their idle or backward stroke. The fixed contact consists of a plate 44 formed with projections 45 in which is slidably mounted a pin46 provided lwith a stop collar 47 against which bears the :spiral spring 48. The movable Contact 49 is carried on the link elementy 36. I also, by preference, provide mechanism for locking'the carrier and pointer against tampering or accidental displacement and means for releasing the lock when a forward movement is to be given these parts, as above described. This mechanism consists of the following parts: 50 is a dog pivoted onthe stud 51 carried on thel plate 31 and fo-rmed with a notch 52 adapted to engage one of a series of pins 53 on the sprocket wheel 18. 'Ihe end of an anchored coiled spring 54 bears upon the dog 50 and presses the same againstr the pins 53.` The dog is formed with frame 10. The stud the projection which is engaged by a finger 56 which is carried upon and rocks with themovement of the rocking member 29.
I have shown the device provided with a battery for supplyingthe current 'necessary to actuate the magnet and ring the bell, the battery consisting of four cells 57, 58, 59, 60. The circuits may be as follows: 61 designates the wires leading to the switch or push button (not shown), by means of which the mechanisms for operating the annunciator are controlled. Wires 61 lead to the binding posts 62 and 63. A wire 64 leads from'the binding post 62 to the magnet 32. A wire 65 connects the other end` of the magnet winding with one of the binding posts 66 of the battery cell 57. The cells are shown as connected in series by the wires 67 and a wire 68 connects binding post 69 of the cell 60 with the binding post 63 of the outer circuit 61. When the circuit thus formed is closed by means ofthe switch or push button, which is preferably located near the barbers chair, the magnet 32 is energized and attracts its armature 33, `which rocks the rocking member 29, causing the'pawl's to ride backward over the ratchet 22. This movement brings contact 49 against contact 46, closing the bell circuit whichmay be made up as follows: 70 is a wire connected ywith the wire 65 and running to the plate 31 to which it is electrically connected by the screw 71. The plate 44 is connected by a wire 72 with one of the binding posts 73 of the electric bell. The other binding post 74 of the bell is connected by a wire 75 with the wire 68. The bell circuit is, therefore, a shunt circuit which is open until the magnet32 has attracted its armature. The full strength of the battery is, therefore, Vavailable at the time the magnet is called upon to move the pawl shifting mechanism. When the armature is yonce in contact with the magnet, or close to it, the decrease of current through the magnet winding due to the closing of the shunt circuit is not so great as to prevent the magnet from holding its armature. As soon as the push button is released, the contraction of spring 39 pulls the rocking member 29 backto its normal position and gives the pawls their operative stroke on the ratchet. Overt-hrow is prevented by the locking dog 50, the curved end of which beyond the notch comes'into contact with and bears upon one of the pins 53 as soon as the dog is released by the finger 56.
It will be seen that the mechanism for moving the carrier is positive and accurate in its operation. The audible signal is given before the pointer is moved, so that when the person operating the device hears this signal he can release the push button. The pointer is locked in position eXcept when the apparatus is properly operated so that there isI no danger that it will be tampered with or @accidentally moved. I claim; y 1. In an annunciator the combination, of a pointer, a carrier, sprocket wheels for the carrier, a ratchet wheel on one of the sprockets, a pawl, an electro-magnet having an armature, mechanism connected with saidV armature which moves the pawl backward over the ratchet, a spring which gives the pawl its forward operative movement, a locking dog which engages the sprocket so as to hold the same from movement in either direction, and means for tripping the dog when the pawl is given its backward movement.
2. In an annunciator the combination, of a pointer, a carrier, sprocket wheels for the carrier, a ratchet wheel on one of said sprockets, a pawl, avpivoted pawl-carrying member, and mechanism for moving the pawl back and forth over the ratchet comprising an electro-magnet, `a pivot-ed armature for the magnet, a rocking member, a spring for giving the pawl its active or forward stroke to which one end of the rocking member is attached, a link connecting said end of the rocking member with the pawl carrying member, and a link connecting the other end of the rocking member with said armature.

sition to hold the sprocket from rotation in either direct-ion, a spring which causes the dog to bear against said pins, and a finger on the rocking member which trips the dog.
4. In an annunciator, the combination with a pointer and means for giving the same step by step movements comprisinga rotatable element and a driving mechanism therefor, of a locking mechanism for said rotatable element comprising a series of pins circularly arranged on one side of the same, a pivoted dog notched so as to engage said pins successively and when in said position to hold the rotatableelement from rotation in either direction, and means operated by the initial movements of said driving mechanism for tilting said do-g out of contact with the pin with which it is engaged.
5. In an annunciator, the combination with a pointer and means for giving the same step by step movements comprising a rotatable element, a ratchet and pawl, means for moving the pawl backward over the ratchet, and a spring to give the pawl its forward active stroke; of a locking mechanism for said rotatable element comprising a series of pins circularly arranged on one side of the same, a pivoted dog notched so as to engage said pins successively and when in said position to hold the rotatable element from rotation in either direction and means operated by said means for giving the pawl its backward movement which tilts the dog out of contact with the pin with which it 1s engaged. y

In an annunciator, the combination of a pointer, a carrier, sprocket wheels for the carrier, a ratchet wheel on one,A of said sprockets, a pawl, a pivoted pawl carrying member, mechanism for moving the pawl back and fbrth over. the ratchet comprising an electro-magnet,.a pivoted armature for the magnet, a rocking member, a spring for giving the pawl its active or forward stroke to which one end of Ythe rocking member is attached, a link connecting said end of the Y rocking member with the pawl carrying member, and a link connecting the other end of the rocking member with said armature; a series of pins projecting from one side of the sprocket on which said ratchet wheel is mounted, a pivoted dog notched so as to engage said pinsl successively and when in said position to hold the sprocket wheel from rotation in either direction; and a finger on said rocking member adapted to engage with the endof said pivoted dog and turn the same out of engagement with said pins.
