To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK I. BELLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at NoXen, in the county of Wyoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Invalids Rests, of which the following is a specification. 1

This invention relates to certain novel improvements in attachments for bed steads.

In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a bed stead attachment which is primarily intended for use in connection with hospital beds or cots, the said device contemplating novel and effective means for elevating the head and trunk of the invalid occupying the bed and for sustaining the invalid in a comfortable position.

With the above recited objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of elements in operative combination set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

In the drawings,Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bed stead provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken upon the line 33 of Fig. 2. -Fig. 4 is a top plan View of the improvement.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary bed or cot.

The improvement contemplates a substantially rectangular frame designated by the numeral 2, and the said frame is adapted to rest upon the side rails as well as the end connecting rails of the bed 1. The side members of the rectangular frame 2 are provided at spaced intervals with depending U-shaped members 3, and the connecting arms of the said U-shaped members 3 are adapted to contact with the inner edges of the side rails of thebed stead so that lateral movement of the frame 2 with relation to the bed stead is effectively obviated.

The numeral 4 designates a head and trunk rest which has its side arms 5 pivotally connected with the side arms of the rectangular frame 2 as at 6. The side arms 5 of the rest 4 are connected together adjacent their outer or free ends through the medium of spaced transversely arranged bars 7 and 8. These bars may if desired be integrally formed with a rest, and the said arms are adapted to straddle the vertically extending posts 9 provided upon the side rails of the rectangular frame 2. The arms 9 are connected through the medium of a suitable member 10, the said member being mounted for rotation within suitable bearings provided upon the said arms 9. This member 10 is provided with a plurality of spaced pulley wheels 11, the same being preferably two in number, and the said wheels are adapted to engage with a cable 12 which has one of its ends connected with the bar 7 as at 13 and its opposite end mounted upon a drum 14 carried upon a shaft 15 which is mounted in bearings upon the extremities of the side members of the frame 2. The shaft 15 is provided with oppositely arranged handles 16 and the said shaft is further provided with, a suitable ratchet wheel 17 which is adapted to be engaged through the medium of a gravity pawl 18. The outer lead of the cable 12 passes through the space between the connecting members 7 and 8, and by this arrangement it will be noted that the rest 4 may be raised or lowered from its pivot 6 to any desired position.

The numeral 18 designates the bottom for the frame and rest. This bottom preferably comprises a reticulated member such as a woven wire spring, and the said member is connected with the transversely arranged bar 7 at one of its ends while its opposite end is secured to the connecting member of the reticulated frame 2 adjacent that provided with the shaft 15.

The simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof, will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain, from the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
