To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM CARROLL, residing at 44 Boxley road, West Silvertown, London, E., England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marine Life-Saving Jackets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a jacket or garment for the purpose of buoying a person in water in cases of ship-wreck and so forth. In devices of this kind as hitherto made it has beenproposed to provide a jacket having vertical compartments filled with suitable buoyant material which compartments at the back of the jacket extended upbetween the arms to the top or collar part. Jackets and belts have also been constructed by stitching two layers of fabric together at intervals so as to form pockets or compartments for the reception of the buoyant-material. Further, the buoyant compartments have in some cases been also formed upon the upper parts of the sleeve portion.

The object of the present invention is to provide an improved jacket or garment of this kind in which the wearer is safely and comfortably supported in the water and .in which sustenance may be carried in an accessible and dry position.

The invention consists of a jacket having a series of buoyant compartments around the body part in combination with a buoyant compartment or compartments disposed the back of the. jacket extends upward to a point about level with the arm-pits, and upon the upper part of the back is disposed a larger compartment filled with buoyant material so as to form a pillow or cushion e. The buoyant cushion c is wider and thicker than the buoyant compartments 6, and it is of greater buoyancy than the entire series of compartments 6. j

The jacket with the compartments is preferably built up of two layers of suitable fabric sewn together as shown in Fig. 3 so as to provide the necessary compartments and the seams may be rendered waterproof by covering them with a-tape prepared with rubber solution so as to prevent access of water to the buoyant material in the compartments.

By the use of the improved jacket the wearer is maintained in an upright position or'may lie out straight without. discomfort the pillow or cushion a forming a comfortable support for the head.
