To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH ALGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, county of Plymouth, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Covering Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for covering boxes and particularly to that class of machines which apply the covering to the box in the form of a blank which is folded about the box and attached thereto.
The present case is a division of my former application filed by me June 12th, 1908, and serially numbered 438,146. In that case I pointed out that there are two principal styles of boxes which are papered in this way, the one a plain box with the usual rectangular or squared corners and sides, and the other a box having about its top or bottom edges, or about both, an extension or flange. The papering of these two types of boxes in a single machine presents a diflicult problem as the differences in form and the action in handling of the coverings requires a great scope of adaptability in the mechanisms of the device.
While involving the same machine as that set forth and disclosed in my said original application the present application is clevoted to that adaption of the machine to the papering of the type of box second described above and referred to as the extension edge box.
In my former Patent No. 820,166 I disclosed a machine of this general nature and while this machine is operative, it is subject to various limitations which it is the object of the present invention to overcome as well as to provide new features and elements and other general improvements.
In the present machine I have provided a new means for forming the turn in the cover at the ends of the box, an improved system of tucking in and turning the paper at the edges, an improved driving system, centering, locating mechanisms, and more complete arrangements for adjustment and interchange with various other constructions and arrangements of parts which are embodied in the machine.
In the specification which follows I shall refer only to those parts directly associated with the special treatment of the extension edge box as the general structure of the machine is fully disclosed and treated in the original application as stated above.
Throughout the specification and drawings which form a part thereof like reference numerals are used to indicate corre sponding parts and in the drawings, Figure 1 is a partial side view of my machine on a general central cross section thereof in which the side folders and box support appear in section. Fig. 2 is a side view of the box support with the end folders swung up into position, Fig. 3 is a plan view of a box upon the support with one side folder swung up, Fig. at is a detail of an end turner brush, Fig. 5 is a general view showing an extension edge box resting upon a sheet of covering paper, and Fig. 6 is a central longitudinal section of the box support and folders showing the longitudinal placers.
12 is the removable box support adjustably mounted upon the bed 1 of the machine through nuts 12 on the threaded standard 12. The upper surface of the block 12 supports the box B just below the lower edges of the side and end folders and 64 so that when these folders are swung up about their pivots 23 the said bottom edges will rest upon and press down the covering paper upon the said extension as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2. Upon both sides of the block or support 12 are centering fingers 101 pivoted at 102 and normally held with the centering point 103 above the plane of the block 12 by a spring 104. The points 103, therefore, assure the proper location of the box laterally while the placers 11 on the plunger 6 adjust it longitudinally.
The placers 11 are mounted on arms 11. adjustably mounted in blocks pivoted at 11 on the end of the plunger 6. When the plunger 6 is raised, the arms 11 drop from the horizontal position shown, thus bringing the placers 11 slightly nearer together. When the plunger 6 descends the arms 11 are swung back to the horizontal, as the placers slide along the bottom of the box B. If either end of the box B happens to be nearer center than the other, the placer 11 at that end will contact with it, pushing the box back to its correct position. The plunger 6 is controlled by the cam indicated at the bottom of Fig. 1.
The points 103 of the pivoted centering fingers 101 in holding the box centered project slightly above the extension edge but as the side folders 65 are swung up the bot tom edges will press down on the points 103 which yield below the level of the extension edge to permit the lower bearing face of the folder to press down upon the extension ed e.
Z8 is an end turner brush adjustably mounted in a connection 42 in the slide 41 which is worked in the slideway 10 by the lever 50.
On the face of the side and end folders are adjustably mounted edge turners 67 formed as open spirals so that the internally engaging brushes 15 will pass therethrough in their downward movement.
The spiral springs forming the edge turner 67 are hooked attheir ends over the pins on blocks 67 which are clamped by a screw 67 on the opposite edges of the folders 6 1 and 65. By loosening the screws 67 2 the blocks 67 may be slid up or down upon the folder edge to raise or lower the turner 67 to the proper height to clear the edge of the box.
The operation of the device is as follows :A box B is centered upon its blank (see Fig. 5) which has been previously gummed and the box and blank are then set upon the support 12 of the machine. The longitudinal centerers in descending place the box in its proper position with relation to the end folders 6 1 and the side placer points 103 hold it in proper position with regard to the side folders 65. Thus properly located the side flaps C of the covering paper are folded up by the upward swing of the side folders 65 which turn the flaps C up against the side of the box and press into the angle between the box and its extension the portion 6 which papers the top area of the extension edge. As soon as the folder has assumed an upright position the edge turners 67 will bring the upper edge or margin 0 of the flap G over the upper edge of the box and in line with the inside brushes 15 which descend to paste it against the inner face of the box edge. As the side folders 65 drop back after turning up the side flap C of the covering sheet against the box, the end turning brushes 48 (see Fig. 1) are advanced past the end of the box support 12 to turn the flap C around the corner of the box B and paste it thereagainst. The slides 40 are so set that the bristles of the brushes 48 travel against the end of the box B with a wiping effect, so that the flap G is not only folded around the corner but is pressed against the box. This flap is covered by the end flap C which is folded up under the wrapper of the end folders &8 by the folders 65 which are next swung up against the box, as shown in Fig. 3. In this position it will be seen that the edge turners on the end folders also overlie the edge of the box to turn in the marginal portion 0 of the end flaps C so as to bring them under the brushes 15 of the plunger in its second descent.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a machine of the class described, a support for a box and a covering blank,
side folders mounted to be moved relativelythereto to fold the blank thereabout, means for positioning the box laterally on said support, said means being yieldable upon thearrlval of the folders at their proper position.
2. In a machine of the class described, a support for a box and a covering blank, side folders mounted to be moved relatively thereto to fold the blank thereabout, means for positioning the box longitudinally on said support, means for holding the box positioned laterally on said support, said means being yieldable upon the arrival of the folders at their proper position.
3. In a machine of the class described, a support for an extension edge box and a covering blank therefor, side folders mounted to be moved relatively thereto to overlie the edge of a box on said support to fold the blanks thereabout, means for positioning the box laterally on said support, said means being yieldable upon the arrival of the folders to their proper position.
4:- In a machine of the class described, a support for an extension edge box and a covering blank therefor, side folders and end folders mounted to be moved relatively thereto to overlie the edge of a box on said support to fold the blanks thereabout, means for positioning the box laterally and longitudinally on said support With regard to said folders, said means being yieldable upon the arrival of the folders to their proper position.
5. In a machine of the class described, a support for a box and a covering blank, a folder for laying the blank against the box, said support and folder being relatively movable to operatively engage the parts, means for positioning the box laterally on said support, said means being yieldable upon the positioning of the folders and support to their proper relative position.
6. In a machine of the class described, a support for a box and a covering blank, a folder for laying the blank against the box, said support and folder being relatively movable to operatively engage the parts, a dog pivoted to the side of said box support for positioning the box laterally on said support, said dog being yieldable upon the positioning of the folders and support to their proper relative position.
7. In a machine for covering paper boxes, a support for a box and covering paper, a pair of folders for bringing the covering paper about the box, means for relatively moving said support and folders so that the folders will overlie the margins of said support, means for holding a box positioned on said support between said folders, said means being yieldable upon the approach of the folders.
8. In a machine for covering paper boxes, a support for a box and covering paper, a pair of folders for bringing the covering paper about the box, means for relatively moving said support and folders so that the folders will overlie the margins of said support, a dog pivoted to each side of said box support for holding a box positioned on said support between said folders, said dogs being yieldable upon the approach of the folders.
9. In a machine for covering paper boxes, a support for a box and covering paper, a 20 pair of folders for bringing the covering paper about the box, means for relatively moving said support and folders so that the folders will overlie the margins of said support, means on the margins of said support 25 for holding a box positioned on said support between said folders, said means being yieldable upon the approach of the folders to said margins.
