To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY S. MON- TANYE, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Johnstown, in the count-y of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates water filters.
The object of the invention is to improve the filter shown in United States Patent No. 880,685 granted to me March 3, 1908, whereby the construction and arrangement of the parts is simplified and the filter rendered more efficient.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical section ofmy improved filter; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the filter applied to a water cooler; and Fig. 1 is a horizontal sectional view of the cooler on the line H of Fig. 3, showing a plan view of the filter therein.
My improved filter comprises a shell 1, which may be of any suitable size and is preferably of cylindrical form. In the shell 1 a suitable distance from the center thereof are formed outwardly projecting annular beads 2 and between the beads 2 and the ends of the shell are formed inwardly projecting heads 3. Arranged in the lower end of the shell 1 and in engagement with the lower bead 3 is a fixed or stationary perforated disk 4 which forms the bottom of the shell. In the upper end of the shell and engaged with the upper bead 3 is an upper removable perforated disk 5 which forms the top of the shell.
Engaged with the outer sides of the plates 4: and 5 are sheets 6 of edges of which engage the projecting ends of the shell 1 and overlap the same. The overlapping edges of the asbestos sheets eX tend over the outer sides of the shell to the beads 2 as shown. The asbestos sheets 6 are held down in engagement with the plates 5 by retaining bands 7 which are preferably formed of copper and are provided with suitable handles 8 whereby the same may be removed from and placed into position. The outer overlapping edges of the sheets 6 are fastened down into tight engagement with the outer sides of the shell 1 by outside clamping bands 9 which are also preferably formed of copper and have on their inner edges reinforcing rings 10. The outer edges of the bands 9 are bent outwardly and then inwardly into the form of a bead or annular rim 11 which projects over the folded edge of the asbestos sheets where the same pass around the outer edges of the shell and thus protect said folded edges of the asbestos sheets.
Secured in the center of the lower disk 4 and projecting above and below the same is a threaded nipple 12 on the lower projecting or threaded outer end of which is screwed an elbow 13 having a supporting foot 1 1 which is adapted to rest on a suitable support. To the elbow 13 is connected a filtered water discharge pipe 15. On the threaded inner end of the nipple 12 is screwed a filtered water receptacle 16 which may be of any suitable size and is disposed in the center of the shell 1. The receptacle 16 is constructed of copper or brass and is preferably of cylindrical form. The receptacle is provided in its upper end and three-fourths of the way down its sides with fine perforations 17 and has formed on its lower end a centrally disposed interiorly threaded socket 18 into which the upper end of the nipple 12 is screwed. The perforated upper portion of the receptacle 16 is preferably covered by a fine wire screen 19. The space between the receptacle 16 and the sides and upper and lower disks of the shell 1 is filled with a suitable filtering material 20 through which and through the asbestos sheets the water is obliged to pass before entering the filtered water chamber.
My improved to improvements in filter may be placed in any form of caslng or water receptacle and in Figs. 3 and 4.- of the drawing is shown as being applied to a water cooler 21. The asbestos cloth, the filter is supported by the foot 14 of the elbow 13 on the bottom of the cooler and the discharge pipe 15 projects through a suitably packed opening formed in one side of the cooler and is provided with a discharge faucet. In connection with the filter I preferably employ a sterilizing medium which is here shown and preferably consists of a highly polished copper cylinder 22 which.
is of sufficient size to fit over the filter and has its lower edge notched at one side to fit over the water discharge pipe 15. In the upper end of the cylinder 22 is formed an inwardly project-ing annular shoulder which is adapted to support a perforated copper disk 23 and through which the water in the cooler passes before being filtered. When the filter is employed in connection with a cooler or other inclosing casing in which ice is to be placed, I preferably provide an ice rack 2a which is placed over the sterilizing cylinder and filter and is adapted to support the ice and prevent the same from inj uring the sterilizing or filtering mechanism.
All parts of the filtering mechanism are formed from copper, brass or other non-corrodible metal and are assembled in such manner as to permit the same to be readily taken apart for cleaning the parts or renewing the filtering material. The entire filter is also arranged in the cooler or casing in such manner that the filter may be readily unscrewed and removed bodily. The water before reaching the inner receptacle must pass through the asbestos sheets, which by their peculiar composition retain all the foreign matter in the water.
The filtering medium may be of any suitable material but preferably consists of bone black and silico-carbon which neutralizes the soluble metallic poisonous matter and does away with all bad odors and bad tastes that may be in the water. The copper sterilizer arranged around the filter not only sterilizes the water but particularly sterilizes the filtering material and if kept bright its germicidal property prevents the possibility of growth of bacteria or other disease producing organisms.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A. filter of the character described comprising a shell having formed therein near its ends inwardly and outwardly projecting beads, perforated disks in said ends next outside the inwardly projecting beads, the lowermost disk being secured to the shell and forming the bottom thereof, asbestos sheets next outside the disks and having their edges folded around the ends of the shell, inner bands holding said edges within the ends and against said disks, and outer bands holding the outer folds of said edges against the outside of the ends, these bands having beads along their edges coacting with the outwardly projecting beads in the shell to protect the edges of the asbestos; combined with a filtered water receptacle within said shell, filtering material between the shell and receptacle, and an outlet.
2. A filter of the character described comprising a shell having formed therein near its ends inwardly and outwardly projecting beads, perforated disks arranged in the upper and lower ends of said shell and engaging said inwardly projecting beads, said lower disk being secured to the shell and forming the bottom thereof, asbestos sheets arranged on the outer sides of said disks, said sheets having their edges folded over the ends of the shell, inner sheet holding bands adapted to be engaged with the edges of the sheets whereby the same are held in engagement with the inner sides of the ends of the shell, clamping bands arranged over the overlapping ends of the sheets whereby said ends are clamped into engagement with the outer sides of the shell and with the outwardly projecting beads therein, annular beads formed on the outer edges of said clamping bands and adapted to protect the folded edges of the asbestos, an inner filtered water receptacle arranged in said shell, said receptacle having its upper portion finely perforated, a filtering material arranged in the space between the receptacle and said shell and the upper and lower disks thereof, a nipple secured in the lower disk of the shell, a threaded socket formed on the bot-tom of said filtered water receptacle and adapted to be screwed onto the inner end of said nipple whereby the receptacle is supported in said shell, an elbow adapted to be screwed onto the outer end of said nipple, said elbow having a filter supporting foot and a discharge pipe adapted to be screwed into said elbow.
