To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX LINDNER, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a lock of that type in which the bolt is not operated by the bit of the key directly but through the intermediary of a lever with which it is hingedly connected.
According to the present invention the stud of the bolt which serves for guiding the lever is movably mounted and of such a shape that the bolt can be placed in the lock-case so that the lock can be used indifferently as a right hand or as a left hand lock. The travel of the bolt is comparatively short so that only a small cover-plate is required.
In the accompanying drawings the improved bolt-lock is shown.
Figure 1 represents the'inner construction of the lock, the cover-plate being removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along line AB of Fig. 1.
The improved lock is constructed as follows :-Ilhe lever 0 is pivotally mounted up on the inner side of the cover plate a so that it can, for example, swing around the canon I). Said lever c has a stud d which engages with the notch e of the lever g and with the notches h of the tumblers. The lever g can swing around the pivot f and it is operated by the bit of the key. Owing to the stud 03 engaging with the notch e, the lever 0 is made to swing to the right or to the left according to whether the lever g is pushed by the bit of the key in the one or in the other direction. The lever 0 could be mounted upon any other part of the lock. At the upper end of the lever 0 a projection z is movably mounted with which the shaft 75 of the bolt can be coupled from either side. The coupling of the shaft 70 with the projection 2' can be effected in any suitable mannor, for example by screwing the threaded shaft is into an equally threaded boring of the projection 2'.
The flange Z of the lock-case is preferably made separate and not in one piece with the cover plate a, in order to facilitate the manufacture in large quantities.
I claim An improved lock comprising in combination with the lock-case having a separate flange, an intermediary lever pivoted upon the inner side of the face-plate of the lockcase, a nut mounted in the upper end of said intermediary lever, the bolt, the threaded shaft of said bolt screwed into said nut, a stud projecting from said intermediary lever, a lever pivotally mounted on said faceplate and having a notch with which said stud engages, tumblers having each a notch with which engages said stud of the intermediary lever, substantially as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
