GEORGE W. cHRisrIANs, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
ELECTRIC FUSE.
Toa'll whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CHRIS- TIANs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York;in the county of New York and .State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Im ro'vement in Electric Fuses, of which the fbllowing is' a specification. i
The invention relates to electric fuses, and consists in the construction, hereinafter set forth, whereby a long fuse strip adapted for high potential currents may be conveniently supportedl and protected. The device comprises a central rod of insulating and preferably refractory material, on the ends of caps, provided With hooks on their edges, which hooks serve as points of attachment for a continuous fuse wire, which extends between said caps and lengthwise of said rod. A suitable covering of refractory insulating material envelops the fuse Strip and rod.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an exterior view of the complete device. Fig. 2 shows the same, With the covering of insulating material removed. Fig.. 3 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. Lshows one of the metallic end caps separately and in perspective. y
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The fuse strip holder A is preferably of porcelain, or other refractory insulating material, and is in the form of a rod with an enlargement B at each end. To said enlargements are applied the metal caps C. The edge of each cap, as shown in ig. 4, is cut to form arms D which, after' the cap is end, are bent twice at right angles to fit under the shoulder of the enlargement and then turned backl at their extremit-ies to form hooks E. After the caps are in place, the fuse wire or Strip F is secured at its end to one hook and then carried to and' fro lengthwise of the holder So as to engage with all of the hooks successively, and the free end is finally fastened at the place of beginning.
Coples o! this patent may be obtaied for five cents each, by
Specifieation of Letters Patent. Application filed December 27, 1911.
PatentedJune 4, 1912. Serial No. 668,067.
In order to protect the fuse wire F and also to guard adjacent objects from the effects of blowing thesame, a suitable covering is dirable. A preferable form of Such cover, here illustrated, is composed of a filling G of plaster, or other comminuted refractory material, and an outer envelop H of non-combustible fabric, such as asbestos cloth. I may apply this covering by first laying the cloth flat, spreading thereon a layer of plaster mixed with water, and then a layer of dry plaster, and, finally, tightly wrapping the coated and plaster-covered cloth around the fuse Strip and holder, so that the plaster is caused to fill the space around the strip and between the same and holder. The cover may be Secured in place by a cord wound around it, as shown at I,
Fig. 1. As soon as the plaster hardens, the
device is ready for use in the ordinary way.
claim:
1. An electric fuse, comprising' a rod of insulating material, terminale of conducting material thereon, and a continuous fuse wire longer than said rod, extending parallel thereto and having loops engaging with said terminais at a plurality of points.
2. An ele'ctric fuse, comprising a rod of insulating material, end caps of conducting material thereon, having integrally formed hooks on their circumferential edges, and a plurality of fuse strips connected to said hooks and extending lengthwise of said rod.
3. A n electric fuse, comprising a rod of insulating material, having enlargementsv at its ends7 caps of conducting material on said enlargements, a fuse Strip connected at a plurality of points to said caps and extending lengthwise of said rod, and an insulating covering disposed between said enlargements and inclosing said fuse strip and rod.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my Signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. CHRISTIANS.
