SLIDING GATE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Pnono ZERBINO, a subject of the King of Italy, and resident of Buenos Aires, Argentina, South America, have invented certainnew and useful Im provements in Sliding Gates, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to sliding gates which, after they have been opened will close automatically after the person or vehicle has passed.
Gates with closing devices heretofore known have been found to be inconvenient in use as they require the person wishing to pass to manually open and maintain the gate open as long as desired or is necessary.
In a gate constructed according to my invention, this difficulty 1s overcome as the gate may be opened directly from the vehicle or horse in case the person wishing to pass said gate is either driving or riding. The said gate is further of a very simple construction and most easy to operate.
In order to facilitate the understanding of the present specification, illustrative drawings accompany the same, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate constructed in accordance with my invention showing the gate closed; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the gate open; Fig. 3 is a front or end View of the same; Fig. 4E illustrates 011 a larger scale certain details of the principal parts of the gate; Fig. 5 is a detail end view thereof showing the device for keeping the gate closed; Fig. 6 is a similar view with the parts in a different position showing a latch for keeping the gate open; and Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional view of the retarding device, by means of which the time during which the gate is to remain open is regulated.
In said figures 1 indicates the guide frame for the door or gate 2, which frame also serves as a support for one end of the beam formed by the bars 34 which extend at right angles to said guide and are separated by clamps 5. The said beam is rendered rigid by the central standard 6 and wires 6 the other end of said beam being secured in a support 1% The lower bar 4 of the beam is a guide rail for the wheels 7- 8 from which the gate is suspended by means of the extensions 9 and 10.

nected therewith, a third duct 13 also straight forming the end and communication with both the ducts 11 and 12. A ball 14 is adapted to travelin either direction in these ducts for the purpose of engaging and propelling the plunger 15 outwardly to engage and move the extension 16 and thus swing the bar 17 on its pivot. The bar 17 is provided with an anti-friction roller 18, adapted for engagement with a tooth 19 fixed to a clamp forming the rear head of the'beam composed of the bars 34.-. When the bar 17 is swung on its pivot as just described, the roller 18 will be swung out of engagement with said tooth 19 for the purpose to be more clearly described hereinafter. The tooth 19 may also be released from the influence of the bar 17 by swinging the said bar from the front of the gate through the medium of the pivoted lever 20. This lever 20 is connected by means of the wire 21 with a crank lever and counterweight 22, which are swung on the pivot 22 as the lever 20 is operated, thus withdrawing the bar 17 by pulling on the chain 23.
The front part of the frame 1 consists of a high column on the upper end of which the beam lever 251- is fulcrumed, from the extremities of which lever the bars 26 are suspended. The lever 24 is provided with a balancing weight 25 and carries at each side of its fulcrum at a distance therefrom, connectinglinks 27 secured to the fore end of the beam formed by the bars 34:. Stops 28 are placed on the standards of the framing 1 to engage the extensions 9 and 10 and thus prevent the wheels 7-8 from impacting against the standards 1 and 1 when opening or closing the gate. A tooth or projection 29 is secured to the upper part of the gate 2, which tooth is arranged to be engaged by a pivoted catch 30 to maintain the said gate in its closed position and to prevent said gate from being accidentally opened by cattle.
31 is a latch similar to the catch 30 arranged to engage a notch 34 located on one side of the upper portion of the gate near the front thereof to maintain the gate in its open position. This latch is intended to be used only when the gate is to remain open an indefinite length of time and is thrown into and out of the notch 34 manually.
In order to prevent the angular pull exerted by the reins 27 on the beam of the gate 2 from pulling said gate against the framing l and thereby causing unnecessary friction, the rollers 32 have been provided, which engage one or the other side of the central opening of the frame, according to the direction from which the pull is exerted.
As may be seen by inspecting Figs. 1 and 2, the gate advances or recedes according to the inclination of the rail beam 4 which moves about its pivot 33.
The operation of the gate constructed as described is as follows: If it is desired to open the gate one of the hanging bars 26, whichever is most convenient is pulled, thus swinging the bars 3% on the pivot 33 and raising the front end of the beam. This operation will lower the opposite end of the beam and will bring the tooth 19 under the bar 17 which will thus maintain the beam in the inclined position to which it has been moved. The gate 2 will now run down on the inclined rail 1 toward the interior of the framing by gravity thus leaving the gateway open as shown in Fig. 2. In this position of the parts the ducts 11, 12 and 13 are also inclined and the ball 1-1 will run toward the right in Fig. 7 through the sinuous channel 11 and finally through the straight channel 13 against the plunger 15 which, owing to the impact of the ball, will be projected and will release the bar 17 from the stop 19, as hereinbefore described. As soon as the stop 19 has been released, the beam will return to its original position, in other words be inclined in the opposite direction and the gate will return and close the gateway while the ball 14- returns to the front part through the straight channels 12 and 13 after which the gate remains in position ready to be again opened. Owing to the sinuous form of the channel 11 the speed of the ball 1a through said channel is retarded so that the gate is maintained in its open position for some time while the return passage of the said ball is quickly made through the straight channels 12 and 13. If it is desired to immediately and quickly close the gate, the lever 20 is swung on its pivot, thus exerting a pull on the wire 21 and causing the counterweight lever 22 to withdraw the bar 17 from the stop 19 by means of the chain 23. This operation will incline the beam toward the front immediately, thus returning the gate 2 to its closed position at once while the ball 14 will move back to its starting point through the sinuous channel from whatever point it may have reached therein. The arrows in Fig. 7 clearly show the manner in which the ball 14 travels through the duct-s or channels 11, 12 and 13. It is to be understood that as either of the bars 26 are pulled to operate the lever 24, the forward end of the gate is raised. The raising of the forward end will cause the catch 30 to be swung on its pivot as shown in Fig. 6 and thus be removed.

It is to be further understood that as before stated, the latch 31 is operated manually and is used only when it is desired to maintain the gate in its open position for an indefinite length of time.
Having now particularly described my.
invention, what I desire to claim by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a gate, a pivoted support therefor, a catch for maintaining said support in an inclined position, a device mounted on said support and adapted to release said catch, means for manually operating said releasing device, and means for automatically operating said releasing device.
2. The combination of a gate, a pivoted support on which said gate is arranged to travel in one direction or the other, said support being provided with channels, a plunger on said support, a lock arranged to maintain said support in one of its positions, and a ball arranged to travel in said channels to operate said plunger to unlock said support and permit it to return to its initial position.
3. The combination of a gate, a support on which said gate is arranged to move to nected channels and a third channel connected therewith, a plunger on said support extending into said third channel, a lock arranged to maintain said support in one of its positions, and a ball arranged to travel in said channels to operate said plunger to release the lock and permit the support to return to its initial position.
5. The combination of a gate, a pivoted support on which said gate is arranged to travel in one direction or the other, said support being provided with connected straight and sinuous channels, a plunger on said sup port extending into the straight channel, a lock arranged to maintain said support in one of its positions, and a ball arranged to travel in said channels to operate said plunger to release the lock and permit the support to return to its initial position.
6. The combination of a gate, a pivoted support on Which said gate is arranged to travel in one direction or the other, said support being provided With a channel, a plunger on said support extending into said channel, a lock arranged to maintain said support in one of its positions, and a ball arranged to travel in said channel to oper ate said plunger to release the lock and permit the support to return to its initial position.
