'fuel oil filters, as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The invention consists essentially in the novel means employed, whereby the oil is automatically purified and cleansed between the supply and the motor.
' The objects of the invention are to iiicrease the efliciency of the internal combusti'on engine by supplying a purified oil as fuel, particularly in such machines "as aeroplanes where the quality of the fuel .is such an important feature in averting disasters, to devise a form of filter, particularly adaptable to engine construction, and generally to provide asimple, cheap and serviceable device for extracting the impurities from oil.

Referring to the drawings, '1 is a casing of cup-shaped form having the inlet 2 adj acent to the upperend on'one side and the outlet 3 toward the upper end, preferably from the other side, said casing 1 converging at the lower end to the opening 4, leading tothe bulb-shaped casing 5, said bulbshaped casing terminating. at its lower end in the neck 6 forming the outlet passage 7. 8 is a cover, preferably screwed on to the top of the casing 1 and closing in said top end. l j
9 is a tap inserted through the neck 6 and forming the valve controlling the outlet 7 The cup-shaped casing 1 and the .bulb casing 5 are preferably formed of one casting joined by a neck 4 which may be internally threaded.
10 is a perforated plate partitioning the interior of the casing 1 and supported within said casing below the-inlet and outlet openings and preferably by the bracket 11, said plate having the central opening 12 in alinement with the opening 4.
13 is a feed pipe from the oil supply exa sectional perspective tending through the inlet opening 2 and elbowed" at 14, from said elbow portion extending downwardly through the plate opening 12 .and the opening/l in the bottom of the casing 1 and having a plurality of perforations 15 immediately below the plate 10. The portion of the pipe within the casing 1 may be threaded at the lower end and. screwed into the neck 4* and then joined to the portion outside, leading to the supply. These are matters of detail, though the present construction lends itself readily to the proper assembling of the parts. v

Thepipe 13 diverges downwardly from the elbow 14;, the opening 12 through the perforated plate being smaller than the opening 4 and this feature is important as it prevents any oil trickling down the side of the pipe direct through the perforations 15.
17 is a filtering substance of any suitable material and completely filling the lower end ofvthe casing 1, under the perforated plate 10 and around the pipe 13, therefore, any oil passing through the perforations 15 must percolate through said filtering substance.
In the operation of this invention, the oil from the supply flows through the feed pipe 13 and pours down the vertical portion of said pipe into the bulb casing 5 and in said bulb .casing 5, the heavier portion of the sediment deposits itself in,the outlet passage. 7. The water in the oil also will remain in the bulb casing so that only the oil relieved of the water and the heavier por- -tion of the sediment rises and this oil rising finds egress through the perforations 15 and percolates the filtering substance 17, where the remainder of the foreign matter is extracted from the oil, the cleansed oil rises through the perforated plate 10 and flows through the outlet 3 into the inlet pipe to the engine for consumptionas fuel. In order to remove the sediment, the tap v9 is turned allowing free passage through the outlet at the bottom of said bulb casing through which the water and said sediment are readily taken away.
What I claim as my invention is:
