ToaZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, EBERHARD ScHNEiDnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Consecutive-View- Perforating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention which is a divisional application of my invention filed March 20, 1909, Serial Number 484618 and relates to consecutive view perforating apparatus.
The distinguishing novel features of the invention comprise film intermittent feeding appurtenances and coacting perforating means. Devices operating in conjunction with the feeding appurtenances, allow the film operated upon to come to a full stop when it is perforated, and also when the said film is in the 'eld of the lens to produce the pictures thereon.

A casing is shown at 15 with the photographic lens 16 and the finder 17. A bracket 18 extends from the roof of the casing 15 and carries the pin 19. A lever 20 is fulcrumed on said pin and has journaled atl its out-er end the roller 21. A spring 22 conneet-s the lever 20 with the roof on the cas ing.` Openings with covers not shown are provided for the casing to enable access to be obtained to the interior thereof. A film box 23 for the unexposed film is secured to the top ofthe casing 15 by means of a screw 24. A roller 25 with the pivot 26 is journaled in the bracket 27 secured in the film bo-x 23, and a pin 28 in said box is fastened to one of the sides thereof. A film box 30 for the exposed film is located and fastened in the lower portion of said casing 15, by means of the screw 31. A roller with the pivot 36 is journaled in the bracket 37 secured in the film box 30. A shaft 38 located in the film box 30 has connected thereto a pulley 39.
A sensitive film 43 on the pin 28 in the box 23 leads over the roller 25, then over the roller 21, and after being manipulated by the appurtenances of the invention is led over the roller 35 to the shaft 38. The film is wound aro-und the latter by means of the pulley 39 and the appurtenances to be described.
A housing for the essential elements of the invention comprises the side walls 50, 51 connected by the front wall 52 and the connecting plat- es 53 and 54. In the front wall 52 are formed three openings 55, 56, 57 and a guide bracket 58 extends from a projection 59 formed with the side wall 50 in the opening 57. Supports 60 and journal bearings 61, 62 extend from the side walls 50 and 51. Bearings 63, .64 extend from the side wall and a lug 65 is formed with the side wall 51. An opening 66 is formed in the wall 50, openings 67 and 68 are formed in the wall 51, and a lug 69 extends from the front edge of the wall 50.
A guide plate 7 0 with the rectangular opening 71 is secured to the front wall 52 by.means of the screws 73, and a guide strip 74 is secured to the plate 70. Guide covers 76 and 77 with conduit-s 78 are fastened respectively to the front edge of the wall 50 and the guide strip 74. Supports 79 and 80 are fastened respectively to the `covers 76, 77 and carry the discharge conduits 81. From the lug 69 extends a hinge pin 82, which latter supports the lugs 83 of the guide door 84 having the handle 85. A spring 86 fastened to the pin 82 has one end 87 thereof bearing on the-outer face of said guide door 84, which locates the film 43 in proper posit-ion against the guide plate 70 over its opening 71.
ln the liournal bearings 62 formed with tho sides 50, 51 is journaled the crank shaft 90 with tho crank arm 91 and-handle 92. A spur gear 93 with the grooved pulley 94 is fastened to the crank shaft 90, and a belt 95 connects said pulley 94 with the pulley 39 of the film box`30. A bracket 98 with the ournal bearing 99 extends from the sidc 50, and a driving shaft 100 is journaled in said bearing 99 and in the bearings 61 formed with the walls 50 and 51. A fly wheel 101 with the hub 102 and a pinion 103 is secured to the shaft 100, the teeth of said pinion 103. meshing with the teeth of the spur gear 93.
An arm 105 has formed therewith the upper forked end 106 and the sleeve 111 with the shoulder 112. An oscillating spindle 113 is fulcrumed in the bearing 63 and the sleeve 111 is fulcrumed in the bearing 64, the shoulder 112 bearing on the upper face of the bearing 64. A cam 119 on the shaft 100 oscillates the arm 105, against the tension of the spring 110 extending between said arm and the bracket 9 8. V An arm 120 has formed therewith the upper forked end 121 and the boss 122. The forked end 121 is engaged by the cam 123 extending from thehub 102, and the boss 122 is fastened to the spindle 113.
A disk 133 is eccentrically fastened to the shaft 100 and carries the eccentric strap 134 from which extends the eccentric arm 135. The latter is fulcrumed on a pin 136 of a reciprocating clamping member 137, having a slot 138, ears 154, opening 139 andthe guide pins 140. The said clamping member has extending therefrom a heel 141 having an opening, by means of `which it is slidably supported on the guide rod 142 se' cured in the projection 59 and wall 50. The end of the clamping member 137 opposite the heel 141bears against a roller 143 journaled on a pin 144 in the wall 51. A flexible member or spring 145 is fastened at one end thereof, to the clamping mem- I tends the bracket 156 which supports the ber 137 by means of the screws 146. From the rear face of the member 137 extend the brackets 147 which support the pin 148. Pawls 149 are supported on the pin 148, and a separating sleeve 150 on said pin `extends between the said pawls. A lug 151 also extends from the rear face of the member 137, and ra spring 152 located in a slot of said lug is held in place by means of the screw 153, and bears up against the pawls 149. The latter extend through the opening 139 and bear against the film 43. It will be noted that the free end of the spring 145 is opposite the slot 138.
From the rear of the guide bracket 58 exscrew pivot 1-57 for the pawl 158. A spring 159 extends from the bracket 58 and bears up against the pawl 158, which latter is located to bear on the film 43. A screw pivot 160 extends from the projection 59 of the wall 50 and supports the pawl161. A spring 162 extends from said projection and bears up against 4Said pawl, which latter is located to bear on the film 43.
On the lower end of the sleeve 112 is fastened the boss 166 of the oscillating bracket 167 with the bifurcated upper end 168, in which latter'is journaled the roller 169 that can bear against the spring 145. A boss 174 of an oscillating arm 175 with the toe 176, is fastened to the spindle 113 and extends through an opening 177 in the wall 50. The said toe can bear against the film 43. From the wall 50 extends a pin 178 and a spring 179 joins said pin with the arm 175.
On the shaft 100 is fastened the bevel gear 188, the teeth of which mesh with the teeth of the bevel gear 189 journaled on a pin 190 secured in the lug 65 of the wall 51. With the bevel gear 189 is connected the shutter 191 having the opening 192.
In the supports 60 of the walls 50 and 51 is fulcrumed the oscillating pin 196 which supports the arm 197 having the guides 198, and in the latter is guided the vertical leg 199 of a bracket having also the horizontal leg 200, which extends through the opening 68 in the wall 51. Y A spring 201 fastened to the arm`197 bears with its free end against the said vertical leg 199. A cam 205 fastened to the shaft 100 can bear against the said leg 199, when the latter is located in the path thereof. The said leg 199 can be raised clear of said cam 205, so that the arm 197 remains stationary. A spring 206 is fastened to the inner face 'of the front wall 52, and has its free end bearing against the arm 197. Two pairs of punches 207 extend from the arm 197 and register with openings in the guide plate in the path of the film 43, and can enter the guide openings 78 in the guide covers 76 and 77. To the wall 51 ishinged by means of the screw pin 208, the adjusting bracket'209 having the heel 210 and the handle 211. A spring 212 extends from the pin 208 and bears against the screw 213 carried on4 the bracket 209. The heel 210 is shown in the drawings, particularly in Fig. 6, above the leg 200 to maintain the leg 199 in the path of thecam 205, and to maintain it out of the path of said cam 205, the arm 200 is located by the operator above the heel 210.
In the film 43 as shown yparticularly in Fig. 15 represented-with the pictures 215, and the pairs of segmental holes 216 adjacent to the edges of said film, and also the index marksl217 which are incidental to the consite the opening 71 and is brought between` the member 137, the spring 145 and the pawls 149. The film then extends between the guide bracket 58 and the toe 17 6 of the lever 175 and the pawls 158 and 161. From the latter elements the film leads into the film box under the roller 35 and is wound around the shaft 38 in the usual Way. The film is Wound up on the said-shaft, by reason of the rotation of the pulley 39, the said rotation being transmitted to said pulley by meansof the belt 95 leading from the pulley 94, the latter rotating with the crank shaft 90. The operator rotates said crank shaft 90, by means of the crank arm 91 with the handle 92. The rotations of said crank shaft are transmitted tothe shaft 100 by the interposed gearing 93 and 103.
By virtue of the rotations of the shaft 100, the eccentric arm 135 vertically reciprocates t-he clamping member 137 with its appurtenances, and the cam 119 on the shaft- 100 engaging the forked end 106 of the arm 105, oscillates the sleeve 112. The said oscillationsv are transmitted to the roller 169 of the oscillating bracket 167, and the said roller 169 bears against the spring 145 on the down strokes of the member 137 thereby clamping and pulling down the film. The pawls 149 also bear against the film opposite the ears 154 on the said down strokes preventing it slipping between the spring 145 and the member 137. During the up strokes of the clamping member 137 with its spring 145, and at the instant each up stroke begins, the spindle 113 by virtue of the engagement of the cam 123 with the forked end 121 of the arm 120, causes the oscillating arm 175 with its toe 176 to bear against the film 43 to prevent it moving upwardly or downwardly.
It will be noted that the cams 119 and 123 operate independently of each other, and that the intervals of time in which the roller 169 and the arm 175 perform their functions can be varied, by varying the relative positions of the cams 119 and 123 with each other, so that the film is clamped and released at the proper times. The pins 140 extending from the member 137 prevent the film 43 from buckling, and it will be noted that during the up`strokes of Asaid member 137, the pawls 149 ride on the film and at thel same time the pawls 158 and 161 assist the toe 17 6 in-clamping the film in place to prevent it moving upwardly.
The rotations of the shaft 100 are transmitted to the shutter 191 by the gearing interposed between said elements, and when the opening 192 in the shutter registers with the opening 71 in the guide plate 70, the photographic lens 16 photographs a view located in the field thereof, said photographing taking place when the film is clamped in position between the guide bracket 58 and the toe 176. During a portion of the interval while the film is clamped and while the shutter is shutting off the light from the opening 71, the punches 207 perforate holes 216, preferably segmental yin form, in the edges of the film 43, distant from said opening 71 and at an interv-al of time which is before or after the picture is being produced.
- Each two pairs of holes are a fixed and predetermined distance from one of the pictures on the film. The holes may be used for driving the film or registering the same in a printing machine or projecting apparatus. The said punches 207 are operated by the. oscillations of the arm 197, which is engaged by the cam 205 on the shaft 100, the said operations taking place when the leg 199 is located in the path of the cani 205. If it is desirable to maintain the said punches inoperative the leg 199 is located out of the path of the said cam 205.
An inspection of the apparatus covering the invention will show that it can, with the usual appurtenances, be used as a picture machine or`projecting apparatus by keeping the door 84 open.
Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:
1. In a consecutive view perforating apparatus the combination of an arm fulcrumed thereon, punches extending from the arm in the path of a film to be perforated and to have objects photographed thereon, and means to swing said arm to bring the punches in the path of the film to simultaneously perforate two pairs of holes in the film, each two pairs of holes being at a fixed and predetermined distance from one of the objects on the film.
2. In a consecutive view peiforating apparatus the combination of an arm fulcrumed thereon, a bracket adjustably supported on the arm, punches extending from the arm in the path of a film to be perforated, a rotative shaft journaled in the apparatus and a cam on the shaft in the pat-li of said bracket to swing the arm and cause the punches to punch holes in said film.
3. In a consecutive `View perforating apparatus the combination of means to locate portions cf a film in the field of a lens, an arm fulcrumed iii the apparatus, a bracket adjustably supported on the arm, punches extending from the arm in the path of said film, a shaft journaled in the apparatus and a cam on the shaft in the path of said bracket to swing the arm and thereby perforate the film with said punches.
4. In a consecutive view perforating apparatus the combination of means to locate dierent portions of a lni 1n the field of a lens, an arm fulcrumed in the apparatus, a bracket with a pair of legs slida'bly supported on the arm, punches extending f rom the arm in the path of said film, an adpisting bracket hinged in the apparatus in the path of one of said legs, a rotative shaft journaled in the apparatus and a cam on said shaft in the path of the other leg of the said adjusting bracket.
5. In a consecutive View perforating apparatus the combination of a housing, a front With an opening for said housing, means to maintain a film against said front, an arm fulcrumed at the rear of vsaid front, punches extending from the arm in the path of said film, covers with conduits in the path of the punches secured to usaid front, means to move the film and means to swing said arm.
6. In a consecutive View perforating apparatus the combination of a housing, a front Wit-h an opening for said housing,
means to maintain a film against said front,
of said film, covers with conduits in the path' of the punches secured to said front, discharge conduits extending from said front and registering with the conduits therein, means to move the lm and means to swing said arm.
