The major portion of the coal unloaded from the vessels is uhu-ally dumped in one or more huge piles on the dock. This is satisfactory for bituminous` coal, but objectionable for anthracite, and accordingly, 'I prefer to 'provide on the dock a storage inclosure G, adapted especially for anthracite coal and have in'ovidcd effect-ive means for storing the coal. or for introducing the suine into arranged in proximity to ditlierent parts ot the inelosnre, and, in addition, have provided novel and very satist'aetory means for reelaiming the eoal or 'tor withdrawing` it trom any part ot the inelosure. The inelosure G is aranged on the doek between the two innermost loading traeks, and along the line ot travel ot the bridge, so that the latter may pass over the same. rl`he lateral dimensions of' the inelosure. are quite large soas to provide very great eapacity. ln faet, for the uses tor which this partieular plant is designed` the Capacity is in exeess of one-hundred, thousand tons. Aeeordingly, I provide in the top a large number of hatehes G', each ot suftieient size to aeeomrnodate and to permit the passage therethrough ot a bueket load. rlhese hatehes are preferably provided with liateh eovers. not here shown` whieh may be arranged tor sliding movement so as to uneover a hatch opening until sntlieient eoal has been admitted tluretlnmigh, and then to close the op,ening. These hatehes` it will be seen, are ar 'auged 'in longitudinal and transverse. rows, and are suftieiently elose together to admit oit the entire inelosure being filled or eharged with eeal evenly and to full capacity.

Consequently, when the eoal is dumped into the inelosure` it will tall direetly onto ythe traelt brani-hes KL in a manner suehthat the eoal eau be reelaimed by a self-loading ear. 'lhe ear itselt may be ol any .suitable eonstroetion. but l prefer to provide a ear whieh is propellwl eleetrieall)y and will seoop up a load when moving 't'orwardly along one ot the trai-k branehes K.
After the car is loaded, it is shifted to the tower H, and the load may be dumped in any suitable mannen-in this ease by tilting or inelining the aix so that the load may slide into a pit I adjaeent the lower end ot' an elevator J, forming a part ofthe tower or grading and delivering apparatusvH. In this manner the coal can be removed from all parts of the inelosure.
The self-loading ear K shown in Fig. 8 is pretereably driven by one or more electric motors. and ineludes a body 7n and a door beneath whieh the. motors and gearing for driving the ear and operating other parts are leeated, as shown by dotted lines.
